What's with putting Timmy Bennetts in playmaking positions!

He plays centre for god sake! Has played a little bit of wing at higher levels also.

Noddy

Apart from Stephano Hunt who are the gun players from Qld this year?
Lee,

From what I have seen or heard, these may be guys to keep your eye on apart from Stef Hunt:

Qld 1

Feao - Strong running prop who was Aus A last year.
Morahan - fullback and younger brother of Luke. Has kept Elih Baillee (OZ 16 merit side last year) in Qld 2.
Ambrosini - No 10 and only non GPS player in the starting 1's side.
Quirk - A number of people have suggested that this backrower is one to watch.

I would be interested in your comments on Breddenhamm (9) and Faulkner (13). People are saying it is a strong Qld 1 side. Not sure how the 2's will go but as Noddy said, great to see so many players from non-traditional schools.

Well Lee, I suppose some of the mail was accurate and four of the boys I mentioned made one team or the other. In hindsight, I do remember that Butler and Buchanan have been spoken of as talent so not surprised they are there. Surprised to see that both Qld fullbacks and Faulkner missed out, as they have been NTS for a while. Price sounds as though he has developed well and had a good tournament.

Oz Schools 1st XV as selected (with my numbering):

1 Salesi Manu St Augustine?s College NSW
2 Sam Roberson St Stanislaus? College NSW
3 Josh Daley The Southport School QLD
4 Nick Buchanan St Joseph's Gregory Terrace QLD
5 Mark Johnson Knox Grammar School NSW
6 Josh Ellice-Flint The Kings School NSW
7 Kotoni Ale St Augustine?s College NSW
8 Jarrad Butler The Southport School QLD
9 Justin Turner Central College WA
10 Robbie Coleman St. Edmunds College ACT
11 Nicky Price St Joseph's Nudgee College QLD
12 Michael McDougall The Kings School NSW
13 Cameron Mitchell The Kings School NSW
14 Dom Shipperley St Joseph's Nudgee College QLD
15 Tyler Stephens St. Edmunds College ACT

Surprises?:

? Backrow: The omission of Hooper is inexplicable because he was the best player of the tournament IMO, or close to it. Certainly nobody was close to him as a 7.

At the ground many of us were chatting during the week about who would be in the 1st XV for Oz Schools and everybody had Hooper as the 7. I know he?s in Year 11 but there is plenty of precedent for players being picked with a year to go at school.

They didn?t pick a specialist 7. Ale played 6 or 8 during the week and was always going to be in the Oz Schools team: he?s a Kefu type and is athletic enough to play in any position in any schools team except the front row ? but he is not a specialist fetcher.

Butler played 8 the whole week and deserved a spot; so the fellow I wouldn?t have in the backrow is 6 Ellice-Flint (NSW II). I was surprised to see him back on the park after looking to be badly injured the other day and maybe out of the tournament, but good for him for being picked from the NSW Twos after taking that heavy knock. I couldn?t see that he deserved to be in Oz Ones but that is neither here nor there.

? 1 Manu (NSW I) didn?t play in the crunch game yesterday and must have been injured. For mine, in the other games, he wasn?t as active around the rucks as Lesa (CS - Vic) or McGrath (NSW II); nor did the NSW I scrum look any better when he was propping than when he was on the bench.

? 5 Johnson may have been a surprise to those who saw him play at 6 in the other games but yesterday he played in the 2nd row and had a blinder. I?m still a bit surprised that he was preferred to Jones (NSW I) though Jones dropped a few balls in the last two games.

? 10 Coleman (ACT) may be a surprise to some but he was dynamite in the last two games and deserves the 10 jersey. None of the others put their hands up too high.

? 12 MacDougall is a bit lucky to be in either squad IMO. He wasn?t even picked to start in the NSW I team yesterday but played his best game of the week when he came off the bench. In the first two games he was guilty of hogging the ball and running across the park; in fact in the first match he made 13 Mitchell look ordinary. Not a lot of choice though.

Mitchell was picked despite going off early in the first game. No other 13 put their hand up; to be honest the national talent in the midfield was not great this year and not a patch on the previous 2 years.

Oz A Schools XXIII squad as selected (with my numbering):

1. Mac Rutledge The Kings School NSW
1. David Feao Brisbane State High School QLD
2. Siliva Siliva Narre Warren South College VIC
2. Chris Edwards Hunter Valley Grammar NSW
3 Matthew Mafi St Joseph's Nudgee College QLD
3. Dylan Brass The Kings School NSW
4/5. Ben Hales Scotch College WA
4/5. Luke Jones St Pius X College NSW
4/5. Tom Heslop The Scots College NSW
6. Eddie Quirk Brisbane State High School QLD
7. Michael Hooper St Pius X College NSW
7. Alex Rovira Challenger College WA
8. Luke Rissman Knox Grammar School NSW
9. Eddie Bredanhann Anglican Church Grammar School QLD
9. Mark Swanepoel The Southport School QLD
10. Harry Bennett The Kings School NSW
10. James Ambrosini St Laurence's College QLD
11. Pao Pele Trinity Grammar School NSW
11. Ken Robertson Ipswich Grammar School QLD
12. Stephano Hunt St Joseph's Nudgee College QLD
12/13 Tim Bennetts Pennant Hills HS NSW
14. Callum Fryer Sydney Grammar School NSW
15. Damon Anderson Cranbrook School NSW

Note 1 - after the Oz A v Fiji game 8 of these players will be chosen to join the 1st XV for the ?test match? against Fiji.]

Note 2 - 12/13 Bennetts, 1 Rutledge and 9 Swanepoel were chosen despite missing both the state trials and the National Championships because of injury.

Unlucky not to be in the Ones:
7 Hooper

A tad unlucky:
2. Edwards
4/5 Jones
9. Bredanhamm

A tad unlucky not to be in Oz A
- 13/15 Esekisa (CS ? Vic) A pocket dynamo of an outside back.

- 14. Jeloudev (NSW I) would have shone more if he got the ball more, but both NSW I wingers suffered from ordinary play from the backs inside them.

- 12 Peter Gilmore (NSW II). Yeah he?s a bit of a crash baller but he was one of the few midfielders during the week to bust tackles or make any metres running straight. Still in Yr.11 so watch this space in 2009.

- 10/12 Jayden Dallalana (NSW I) was disadvantaged when moved to 12 in the last two games. But he?s back at school next year and I expect his name to come up 12 months from now.

- 1 Liam McGrath. (NSW II)

- 15 Morahan (Qld I) and 15 Baillie (Qld II) both showed some exciting elusiveness with the ball in hand but also faults in linking and untidiness at the back.

A tad lucky to be in the Oz A team:
- 12. Hunt (Qld I) had a big reputation but didn?t do a lot except in the final yesterday when he was a least decent.

- 11. Pele (NSW I) was sensational in the Sydney CAS v GPS game but looked like a lost soul this week. Not a smart rugby player but has a future (as a 13 IMO) if he gets some good coaching.

Good to see in the Oz A team:
- 10 Harry Bennett (NSW II) should have been chosen for NSW Is but took most of his chances when ostensibly the reserve flyhalf for the Twos.

- 14 Callum Fryer (NSW I) was consistent the whole week although I haven?t mentioned him before ? and had his best game on Sunday.

- 7 Alex Rovia (CS ? WA) Ditto for the blonde assassin.

- 4 Ben Hales (CS ? WA) Has Eales-like hands in the lineout and likes work.

- 15 - Damon Anderson (NSW II) Anderson, from Cranbrook (!!) scored the best individual try of the tournament yesterday when he ran up the left side of the park, beat his man inside then beat the next man inside and ran up the right hand side of the field to eventually score under the sticks. Campo ? eat your heart out. Was good other days too.

Thanks Lee - sensational stuff!

Now if I can just score me a Bledisloe ticket I will return the favour and do a report on the schoolboy curtain raiser against Fiji.

No Joeys boys in the Aus schoolboys ? Have they put an end to the quota system or do they actually want to win for a change ?

Lee, once again awesome reporting. Love your work.

So last year we had a barage of folk who were sure things for professional contracts and success.

Who are the men (boys) most likely this year?

How common is it for Joeys to have no one in either squad??? just noticed that or am i mistaken?

Dave Cowper (27)
Joeys have given their quota to Kings. The kings boys will then get injured so Joeys will end up winning GPS. Clever.

Um...didn't Qld win (again) and yet got fewer players in the team than NSW? How does that happen?

Funny, I was wondering something similar. Not really about the Qld representation, but the insanely high NSW representation. 7 in the 1s, and 12 in the 2s. Especially when NSW I got beaten twice.

Lee Grant

John Eales (66)
People shouldn't get too fussed about percentages of representation.

Qld II beat NSW I 2 years ago and NSW II beat Qld I - yet few boys from either Twos team got selected for the Oz Schools Ones. Their Twos squads just had better teamwork, not better individual players.

You could argue that players capable of better teamwork should be selected ahead of better individuals but it doesn't happen in the real world. It would have been a brave selector to overlook Kurtley Beale, Quade Cooper, Rob Simmons and Robbie Horne from the losing Qld I and NSW I teams.

Qld I had better teamwork in the final on Sunday but you couldn't argue with the selection of the Oz Schools 1st XV, give or take one or two, as always happens.

Anyway, at every level of rugby, we have all seen teams with more players who are good enough to play at a higher level than another team has, yet lose to them.

Joeys?

As anybody could have seen in the Joeys trial matches, and as I reported earlier in this thread, Joeys don't have as many good players this year as they usually have. Of the 46 boys selected in the 2 NSW squads only 3 were from Joeys and all in the Twos team at that; nor did they deserve better representation. (They had only 4 in the squads last year, though 2 were stars.)

Kings had 7 boys in the 46 players picked including 4 in the NSW I backline (and it should have been 5 IMO), but in accordance with what I wrote above I'll warrant that, through good teamwork, Joeys will give more than a good account of themselves when they play Kings.

They always do. Even when they dont have the best team they pull it out because they simply want it more.
Kings vs Joeys at Hunter's Hill will be the decider IMO.

article on Nicky Price from the Sunny Coast paper

Ged Maguire still remembers with fondness the first time he watched Nicky Price play rugby.

It was around nine years ago and Maguire, the then principal of Sunshine Coast Grammar School Primary, had gotten wind of a student who could, well, run like the wind.

Upon Maguire?s request, Price eventually agreed to try the 15-man game.

The rest is history.

The 17-year-old earned selection on the left wing for the Australian Schoolboys side following impressive performances for Queensland in last week?s national championships in Canberra.

Price scored a try in the Maroons? 23-21 victory over NSW in the final on Sunday, giving Queensland its third straight national title.

One person not the least bit surprised to hear of his selection was Maguire.

?Once I found out how fast he was, I asked him if he would consider playing rugby,? Maguire said.

?He eventually said yes, and he was unbelievable.?

Maguire has coached his fair share of rugby talent over the years including former Wallabies John Eales, Dan Herbert, Nick Stiles and Brendan Cannon.

But he clearly has a massive rap for Price.

?Dan Herbert was probably the most talented I?ve seen as a young kid, but at the same age I?d say Nicky Price is better,? he said.

?He has all the skills that Herbert had, only he?s faster.

?I?ve coached a lot of good players and he?s the most outstanding prospect I?ve seen.

?He kicks both feet, he?s an incredible defender and he?s probably the fastest rugby player for his age in Australia.?

The Australian Schoolboys team will play Fiji as a curtain raiser to a Bledisloe Cup match at Suncorp Stadium in September, and will also tour Tonga and New Zealand later in the year.

However, Price is yet to decide whether he will commit himself to rugby.

The talented teenager has also represented Queensland in Aussie rules and cricket, and was the national long jump champion for his age division at one stage.

The only sport he has ruled out for certain is cricket.

?I?ve got to make a decision pretty soon, probably at the end of the year,? Price said.

?It?s still too hard because there?s some awesome pathways for AFL as well with the Gold Coast team coming in.?

Price injured his left knee in the dying minutes of the win over NSW and will have scans to ascertain the extent of the damage today.

?It might be a medial ligament tear, but I?m not too sure yet,? Price said.

Remarkably, Price flew back to Brisbane after Sunday?s game to attend the formal of his current school, St Joseph?s College Nudgee.

?I went straight from the airport to the formal,? Price confirmed.

Sounds like a talent all right! Gee, Qld is certainly developing some talented outside backs. The trick will be to hang on to him.

Seemingly harmless peer pressure can often lead teenagers up the wrong path in life.

But as St Edmund's College student Tyler Stevens has discovered it can also prove extremely beneficial.

It took some banter from his mates two years ago to convince Stevens to switch from playing rugby league and AFL to rugby union, and he's continued to reap the benefits.

The 18-year-old fullback was one of two Canberra players this week selected in the Australian Schoolboys rugby team, alongside fellow St Eddie's player and flyhalf Robbie Coleman.

Stevens and Coleman were the standouts for the ACT team during last week's Australian Schoolboys Championships in Canberra.

While the home team failed to win a game, selectors rewarded Stevens and Coleman for their solid performances with selection in the top-tier representative side.

The pair will join their new teammates in camp in Brisbane on September10.

They will have two training sessions before their first hit-out, against Fiji in a curtain-raiser to the Wallabies' Bledisloe Cup encounter against the All Blacks at Suncorp Stadium on September13.

Following that is a 20-day camp to New Zealand and Tonga, which will include a Test match against each nation as well as warm-up games.

While Coleman grew up playing the 15-a-side game Stevens kicked a rugby ball for the first time two years back.

''All my mates played rugby and they got me over to give it a go and I've really enjoyed it the whole time,'' the Year12 student said.

''I played fullback and centre in league, so my first rugby coach figured it would make sense for me to play fullback in union, and it's turned out pretty well.''

Stevens and Coleman were two of several players Brumbies talent scouts had their eyes on during last week's tournament.

Chief executive Andrew Fagan and his coaching staff met over the past few days to discuss which players they would offer Brumbies Academy contracts to for 2009.

''There is some fairly strict protocols in place preventing approaches to players during the championships but we certainly had our eye on a few guys and a few others caught our attention,'' he said.

''There are certainly spots available and players like Tyler and Robbie I'm sure will come under the microscope, but we'll make those decisions within the next week or so.''

Coleman, who grew up supporting the Brumbies, said making the Academy squad was his next goal.

''It would be a big step but one I'd definitely love the chance to take.''

John Eales (66)
Tyler and Coleman

The Brumbies will sign them up for their Academy as sure as God made little apples. Finegan was there the whole week and new coach Andy Friend was there on Sunday. Tyler is a running fullback and the article explains why he is a bit raw at the back of the field.

Flyhalf Coleman is a less outstanding player, but it will be good for the Brumbies to develop a local lad to contend in the future against Victorian Lealiifano and Queenslander To'omua

There were a lot of good running wingers and 15s during the week but most of them need work on using the ball.

Nicky Price

Thinking of AFL? None of my Qld informants during the week mentioned this and they just about mentioned everything else about any good player.

There's not much of him but he's the type of player for whom you hold your breath every time he gets the pill. He was probably the fastest player of the tournament - and there were a few there with a bit of toe..
