I hate most mungos and think their skill levels are over-pumped up by a compliant NRL press, however I do think ol' granite chin would be handy at flyhalf. I think he would have the leadership to run the show - but he'd have to learn a significant amount of rugby smarts to play conductor.
Any if you were him - he'd have to consider playing on the big stage as part of a massive game vs status quo being a big fish in a very little pond at Penrith.
Footballers love playing on the big stage. Yes origin is massive but so is being part of a Lions tour or world cup - or a game at Paris or Twickenham. It would have to tweak some interest..

Cleary would be a world class 10 if he had spent most of the past years playing rugby instead of league. The physical gifts, intangibles, and work ethic are certainly there.

But my gut feeling is that the subconscious "feel" you develop the manage the game as a league half will be a challenge to unlearn. There's a greater appetite for risk in league because the tackle count always ensures the pill will change possession and come back to you eventually.

There's not an equivalent scenario in league where you could be utterly starved of pill in rugby if your forwards are being overrun the entire game (something that's a very realistic scenario for the Wallabies).

League has become a far more risk adverse game these days imo, particularly now that the short goal line drop out has become popular, you don't see off loads nearly as often, as any team is now in a position to score from fifty metres out, so any mistake can be ridiculously costly. The game is literally based around which team will make a mistake first.

This stuff about pulling in NRL big names is interesting, though ultimately pointless I would think. Still. If we could get high level NRL talent across to the Wallabies we should simply do it. I really don't watch Mungo at all these days, not even SOO. Possible occasional replay of something at the pub but that would be it. So I have no idea about this Cleary, though he is a big enough name that even I recognise it. I take it he plays NRL 6 or 7 and is a decent distributor/game director?

Whatever the differences in the modern NRL game and mungo -> Rugby transition issues - if he was available just do it and see what the heck happens.

If you could afford to give him 12 months to purely figure it out with no judgement I genuinely think he'd be Owen Farrell by year 2.

I think we overplay how much these guys or outside Rugby give a shit about the Lions tour. A Bled might drive some interest but SOO is huge in our landscape.

It's a silly argument really. Why would he leave when he's probably earning up to 2m now with all the endorsements and benefits or crap like cars on top of his contract. There's no guarantee Adidas would continue to support him in Rugby to the same degree with bugger all popularity in Aus. 'Global game' sure but Adidas are more likely to put this money in Soccer players who dwarf anything Rugby has in Europe.

This chat will never end and we'll talk about the next start the NRL have as well.

Yeah I love it and will continue to dream of a guy like the hammer in the 7s side for the Olympics but it seems people get a bit too far into the weeds with it and even get themselves worked up over a hypothetical bad game he has v the Force on a Saturday arvo.

Yes and no.
I know most mungos watch the RWC a lot closer that you think. They would love to be part of that - due to ego more than anything else. and if it was all about cashola, why wouldn't a stint in Japan appeal once they are in their mid 30s - cultural immersion for the family and a life experience. Or I guess family and friends in Penrith has appeal if thats the comfort zone.
