Tomikin if an All Aussie competition was viable with enough teams that could adequately pay players (relative to the market) then it would have happened by now. The truth is that no broadcaster is interested.

@Bullrush , here's the crust of it quality might go down in the short term but fan engagement will go up. Proven in super au. Fan engagement going up gets more players in rugby. This drives better quality..

More teams more players more engagement better talent.

Now will this work for Australia maybe, there's an educated guess that we get more Ozzie's playing in a talked about comp we will be better.

You know what Oz leaving super rugby will do.. fuck New Zealand... Which is why you're so tethered to it. Maybe it won't work for us... I think we have to do it as currently we are fucked
Do you really think fan engagement will go up? Fan engagement went up in 2021 because we were coming out of Covid. Engagement went up in NZ as well. And it has gone back to normal now that people are allowed out of their house and can go to events whenever they like. What happens to fan engagement when the Super Rugby Au Champion can't beat 4 out of 5 of the Super Rugby Aotearoa teams?

Again, if 'more teams more players more engagement better talent' was true then how does NZ and Australia have 5 RWC between us while England, France and Japan - who all have more clubs and registered players according to Wikipedia - have only 1?

Please....show me which other rugby nation has this self-funded domestic comp that needs no top-down assistance (or billionaires/corporate finance) and how playing domestically makes for better players and teams? If you want to throw out the model that has been successful in the past, where is the new model that you think we need to copy?

Leaving Super Rugby doesn't automatically fuck NZ but it will definitely fuck Oz. But it's just nonsense to keep talking like it's going happen because the parties are committed till 2030 anyway....

Isn't he problem that not enough care about the Aussie teams Rebel? Otherwise they would have the support and this thread would of died at 100 pages? We can look at alternatives etc, but the reason Aussie teams are struggling is in all honesty got all to do with lack of support in Aus, not what NZ teams are doing etc.

I will suggest super in Aus wpuld do better in support if Wallabies were more successful.

We had 52,00 people at Suncorp for the Reds ans Brumbies final which was a cracking game right to the end.

That was our final, that's what the Reds treated as the goal.

Playing the kiwi teams is such a detachment thanks to poor time zones and players we're hardly invested in.

I as a father can't watch any kiwi games as they're on from essentially 1-6pm AEST. So I'll never get invested in the kiwi teams. Whereas with Aussie teams, I know I can put the kids down and I've got a team I can watch and follow outside of the Reds.

Yeah because the last 25 years have worked out so well for the game here.

Yeah....a whole two seasons..... but sure - let's take a look

In 2017 the last year with the Force, the Brumbies made the Super Rugby Finals based purely on winning the conference with 34 points. If Finals had been based purely on points, no Australian team would have made it with the Brumbies sitting at 9th overall on the ladder.

The Force are cut along with the Southern Kings and Cheetahs.

In 2018, the Waratahs won the Australian conference with 44 points - enough to be 5th on the ladder overall.

In 2019, the Brumbies were again the conference winners with 48 points which put them 4th on the overall ladder.

So apparently, just going by the overall standings, there was improvement after the Force were cut. Tell me about your 'case study' that proves otherwise.

Wrong.

The Brumbies didn’t have any players from the Force in 2019.

The Waratahs had one (?) in 2018.

Just a note. Bullrush, [necessary edit :Stoff apologies to Stoff], Dan are Kiwi fans wanting the best for Kiwi rugby. They have the presentation of being irritated with thoughts in Australia that do not suit that focus.

It is tiresome going in circles but it seems more relevant to me continue the discussion with the actual Australian supporters who also support Super over expansion.

2 x RWC
4 x Super Rugby titles
10 x ranked in Top 3 countries.

Australia didn't really drop out of the Top 3 until 2015.

So in the last 25 years, Australia was easily one of the best rugby nations - it's only been in the last 10 that there has been a big drop off.

No, Super Rugby in Australia would be better if Australian Super rugby teams won more. Fans are demoralized from a decade of watching NZ teams they don't care about dominating a competition they are involved in

Oh it's ok guys, it's only been 10 years of utter dross. We should be grateful

I agree wholeheartedly with this.

Fans are not stupid though and the idea that supporters would flock to see the Rebels in Super Rugby AU (a competition they only won 3 out of 8 games in BTW) knowing that this same team would get trounced by almost every other team in the equivalent competition just a 2-hour flight away is funny.

Grateful?

I'm simply pointing out the facts cos hoggy doesn't know them. The last 25 years have not been all terrible. In fact, they include a 15 year period that almost every other rugby nation would die for.

And instead of wanting to return to being a Top 3 country, some people are longing to be the Super Rugby AU champions.

Says the guy who apparently had a 'case study' LMAO

You said Australian teams improved after the Force were cut…

They didn’t…

You pointed out the Brumbies success, despite them not benefiting from the Forde being cut…

Oh, and the Tahs? LOL

You said Australia slid in the rankings since the Rebels were introduced in 2011, ignoring an actual lift in that period and one of the most successful periods for Australian Super Rugby teams between 2011-2015…

Anything else I missed?

It seems like an easy, yet condescending solution provided some Kiwis believing it will simply fix Australian rugby while ignoring so many larger important factors that have seen the game in decline since we had three teams.

I put forward to you that Super Rugby has been in steady decline since the early years and there’s only been one constant factor in that time…

Five Kiwi teams.

How has one of the main dominant partners in this alliance not expanded their professional footprint in almost thirty years?

That sounds completely devo to me…
