Australian Rugby / RA

That will hurt the warriors more than ABs
I know Stephen Kearney was a Nua boy who was scouted and just got a chance to go to Aus when Warriors started, he was from Waikanae, and I think about 30 years back probably same time or well before SBW.
Just out of interest sports news I watching right now on national news, the stories have been in this order, Liam Lawson in Formula One, DuPont getting jaw injury in WC, Netball , NZ cricket getting beaten, and then we have got to league, and the final tomorrow night. So you get that it a bit different here.

But getting back to RA as we should be, I not sure if PE money is good or bad option, the one thing you don't really want is your potential partners dropping what they are prepared to pay and so you have to get loans too keep you viable. Seems loan will be about 10% interest (though I not sure how right that is for highish risk loan) and $6m a year is going out door before you start helping grassroots rugby

Eddie probably deserves more time, and I think some of his decisions were for the best in terms of our future

But his mouth has written cheques that this team can’t cash. He came in talking about World cups and now is talking about 2027. Said he’s all in on Carter Gordon and now he’s not.

It just seems so chaotic. Jones is meant to be a meticulous planner, why does it seem like he’s just making decisions on a whim?
fuck that. remember all that talk "If you can't improve a team in a week, you're not a good coach"

After discussed the other day on here with some ludicrous commentary from people bemoaning Aus government support for Fiji. Article today on SMH has a number associated with the investment. Apparently Pacific Aus Sports sponsorship worth $1.8m. So it’s a decent amount, but well worth the investment politically and also from a rugby perspective.
Cracking investment

As I said somewhere a couple of years ago on here when the Drua 1st got touted as coming into SRpac the money that that would go to it is a trickle of what the aus govt. spends as a whole budget to the pacific. It comes out of that fund & like all govt. funds a certain amount is set to a budget then from there it gets divided up to what & where different things are needed whether that be aid, infrastructure, education, sport & so on. The 1.8 was prob just on the drua mens side but outside that we paid for the drua women to come across play in superw, paid for the Tonga to host the rwc qual v HK, funded the 7's regional qualifiers, helped fund the test matches last yr in the aus a pacific series. Its not just paying for the best Fiji side we have ever seen beat the worst wallabies.

With out saying too much someone I know very well works in Port Moresby & all aussie govt. workers live in the same gated community. The person I know became good mates with the bloke who was on the ground helped start up the Hunters in the qrl & said that this program was having more success than any education program you could possibly dream of.

The better Pacific Islands rugby gets, the better Australian rugby gets. More realistic high quality competition at Super Level, and potential to be great spectacles at the international level. Pasifika communities in our big cities are enormous. I'm certain Aus v Fiji at CommBank would sell better than Aus v Argentina.

2 test matches a year v Fiji/Samoa/Tonga can only be good for our game, and will be good for theirs in turn. I hope in the future we do smaller EOY tours. We seemingly always accumulate long injury lists, don't make much money, and without winning don't do anything for our profile.

We have ignored PI growth for two reasons 1) It was the belief corporate sponsors wouldn’t touch them and 2) Aus and NZ wanted to keep the PI talent for themselves

If the PI nations and super rugby clubs keep having success we will be forced to take notice .. And you’re right a Fiji Test does sound more lucrative than Argentina … (crazy right)

Finally if you want confirmation that the sporting world is finally taking the PI nations seriously… just look who’s sponsoring Fiji this WC…

Italy have been bottom of the 6 nations forever but they are creeping closer over time and their U20s are very competitive and much better than Wales & Scotland. Wouldn’t it be good to see Japan potentially do similar.

ppl have said they same about Italy in the 6N, it’s taken 20 years for them to be competitive. Japan brings the commercial side as well
I’m not against, just really disappointed with how they have regressed since 2019

Eventually South Africa will leave so we need to look at other teams to build a comp like they have up North

RSA not getting near a 6N spot.

Have they regressed or just momentarily outperformed? If you graphed their performances over 20-15-10 years period, the chart would be pointing in an upwards trajectory.

Just my opinion but outside the 10 “tier1” sides, I still believe they are most likely to break into the elite countries on a consistent basis.

Well they went from beating South Africa in 2015 to beating both Ireland and Scotland in 2019 to losing 9 of their last 11 tests and just got smacked up by a dross England team

I’d disagree on the South Africa part. They are already apart of the champions cup now on top of the URC. It’s only a matter of time

I’ve said it over & over again. The RFU saw the greater good in the 6N getting PE down south NZRU choose to look after themselves than grow the competition & until today RA were going to do the same.

I personally don’t care if it’s twiggy, cvc or silver lake but invest in the RC with expansion + women’s & u20’s it has worked wonders up nth.
