The similarities between Joyce and JON are several.
He has left the reputation of QANTAS, once a beloved national symbol, in tatters.
Joyce has also left QANTAS with a massive opex and capex mountain to climb. He is a balance sheet and p&l musketeer that carves out profitability but is the opposite of what we need in my opinion, which is long term stewardship.
Driving revenue in such a competitive landscape whilst also continuing to invest in the base/roots would have to be one of the most challenging assignments any Chief executive could face, IMO.
Rugby in Australia is in a position where it can be killed quickly both by mishandling the finances or by letting the soul of the sport whither by neglecting its people on the ground. AFL/NRL would need both of those things to happen simultaneously and for an extended period to be eradicated from national consciousness entirely.
Choosing a CEO will be a punt either way because there's no one presently who could walk in both worlds immediately. I have no suggestions.
