Hell the only old bloke in the game who seems to have a few synapses to rub together is coaching England.

Bugger me. Eddie's not old. I'm old!!! BTW talking about the old blokes, there is a very amusing incident involving Greg Martin and David Campese which lost us the Third Test against the British Lions in 1989. Easy to find if you look.

Mind you, it was not funny at the time.

Former Rugby Australia Geoff Stooke director calls for dramatic overhaul of domestic professional game
Nick Taylor - The West Australian - Tuesday, 7 April 2020

Former Rugby Australia director Geoff Stooke says a dramatic overhaul of the domestic professional game is needed if the game is going to survive.

It starts by scrapping Super Rugby, already on a death spiral long before the coronavirus crisis caused its suspension, and starting a new competition that would include Australia’s four Super sides, Western Force and a sixth Barbarians-style club.
They would then be joined by New Zealand sides, Global Rapid Rugby clubs and teams from Asia and the Pacific Islands in an expanded competition.

Stooke, who resigned in disgust after 51/2 years on the RA board when the Force was controversially axed from Super Rugby, made an unsuccessful bid to return at last month’s elections.
“It all starts with the realisation that Super Rugby is stuffed. If you don’t accept that you are kidding yourself,” he said.
“Super Rugby is a sham. It’s just rubbish. It’s been my view for a long time that the current model has done its dash, it has lost its appeal.

“I realise money is going to be tight but teams must be financially viable. A lot will depend on the appeal to a broadcaster and free-to-air is important.
“The Barbarians team would pick up players who are contracted but can’t get a run in other sides. It would not be a weak side. It could be like the Brumbies when they started — the rejects who became the strongest team.
“Having six teams means every team plays every week. That makes more sense.”

Stooke, who was also a long-standing chairman of Rugby WA, said the competition needed to adopt laws played by GRR that were designed to speed up the game.
“Blind Freddy could tell you that watching a game of GRR is far more enjoyable than the rolling mauls, scrum-after-scrum crap that is Super Rugby,” he said.

Pretty solid statement from my perspective.

Only rules I think need to be looked at are the amount of time it takes for set piece to be completed and the rolling maul. Scrums just take too long to get set and mauls are allowed too much time to be set and momentum to be built going forward. The rest of the game is fine

The only other rule change i would like to see included is not kicking the ball out on the full from your 22. The GRR games I've watched haven't done a lot to speed up set piece ( as they promised), but the ball staying in play from kicks from your 22 add to the counter attack from good field position. Also the 40-20? tends to hold the wingers back creating a bit more space. All positive changes IMO.

Rules changes would be handy, but the biggest question will be - where's the money? Any comp that includes less of NZ and S Africa will be much less valuable in terms of broadcast money from those countries, and probably Europe, all of which already subsidise us. It's gonna take a massive increase in Australian interest to make up for that loss. Or you just cut the budget back by 50% or so.

There's talking up ones own book and then there's the above.

What absolute drivel.

oh yeah, now I rememebr watching that when it happened. wonder if an infant Sonny Bill was watching at the time too and thought "lol, check out that fucken loser, stuffing up a once-in-a-lifetime Lions series for his whole country, lol."

so how was the blame levied out at the time? at a glance I'd say 67% campo/28% mardo/17% sonny bill/14% kearns/3% justin marshall/1% shiggins

I was at that game. Most punters blamed Campo but Campo blamed Marto. Funnily enough the thing I remember most about that game was Scott Gourley playing out of his skin, he was 20 I think. I was a 20yo loosie too so perhaps I was just watching him in envy.

About all I can remember know is that my buddy in Hong Kong, himself a pretty good sportsman, did a fiendishly good impersonation of the commentators. Needless to say he was a Pom, almost shat himself with joy, the bugger.

Seems that the tone of discussions is a little different in England re players being stood down and taking pay cuts or even pay freezes. A couple of quotes in this article stood out to me:

Mark Lambert, the chairman of the Rugby Players' Association, said that his 700-strong membership understood the severity of the situation and were prepared to be "part of the solution".

"The principle of being furloughed as a means of helping to save clubs is something that the players totally understand," Lambert said.

"The game is under no illusions. The domestic game in England hasn't been moneymaking for a few years and players are aware of that situation.

Lambert said the RPA's club representatives had been "outstanding" during this fraught process and that the organisation was seeking clarity and guarantees to ensure that the lowest-paid players and members of staff were shielded from the cuts.

Incredible - mature, conciliatory, looking out for those in the game not earning huge contracts .....what the hell is the RPA thinking?

You're 130% correct

I think it’s fair to say that Campo took the vast majority of the blame and some never, ever forgave him. If I were to hazard a guess I’d reckon there would be a significant portion who have knowledge of the incident and new Campo was involved, but couldn’t tell you who the other player was.
