Australian Rugby / RA

You are vastly overstating what this means to Australian players in particular.

The NRL TV deal is worth more than essentially every rugby competition combined. The NRL is also way better at monetising/promoting the athletes as individuals which is beneficial for both the individual and competition

The last Wallaby to have actual cut-through to the casual audience was Quade Cooper and look how he's been treated. For better or worse rugby 'culture' rejects the 'rockstars' but the likes of Dusty Martin, Latrell Mitchell etc. get kids excited and people talking which means more $ for them.

I'm not sure by what metric rugby is 'rapidly growing' in markets of relevance but outside of France the main club competitions have never been in a more perilous state.
If you ask most people in Melbourne they can name, Cam Munster and Ryan Papenhuzen. League doesn’t have the cut through people in Sydney think it has

How intertwined are pokies and League? If Pokies saw significant reforms in the future, would that hurt the League purchasing power? Or they have a wealthy enough, large enough fan base that drives their revenue.
The AFL and NRL are heavily dependent on gaming. It’s ultimately a reason why Rugby is so far behind.

10 cents per bet and 8m a year to the AFL and NRL. Look how many markets are offered on both those games. Nothing in the game happens that you can’t bet on.

I would love to see Cam Murray in Rugby, but this feels like an article for the sake of it. A patch work of the last 3 months of Eddie news.

He's signed to Souths as Captain until 2025. Only interesting part is Cameron saying he sees Rugby as an option which I don't think is the case with most of the targets.

Wow. I know even in a lot of states where sports gambling is allowed it still isn't on phone apps yet, so you have to place it at a sportsbook. It will be bonkers between all thier major leagues + Collegiate sports.

Do you pick him or Skelton in your starting team if available? Cant have both without changing your Backrow
Skelton's a few years older so there'd only be a bit of crossover but I think the focus for Asofa-Solomona at wallaby level would be as an impact option off the bench, so he'd usually be coming on as Skelton went off.

As far as eligibility goes I think he'll qualify under the 10 years cumulative rule sometime next year, maybe early 2025. It would be a very RA move to not properly check this first though.

There is zero chance Rugby Australia pays big money for league converts to come off the bench.

Granted that's more than Vunivalu has been doing...

I sincerely hope this is just some weird media angle. Overpaying for league converts will at best be a short term boost but mostly just a money sink that doesnt make a dramatic difference in our fortunes.

Yet that doesn’t tell the full story. They built their wealth off the back of pokies and then invested the sale profits back into the club.

Also sports betting is where the real money is. The AFL and NRL are doing 10 cents per get placed.

With gambling ads being a driving force behind growing TV rights deals as they spent 287m on tv advertising last year with most of that targeted to sports telecasts.

I watch the rugby on Stan and have never once seen betting mentioned

Is there a reason rugby haven't dipped their toes into the sports betting market? I know there are more options than a few years ago, but still nothing like the AFL and NRL markets.

And surely the answer can't be a morality thing.

I think the companies go where the eyes are. They don't want to invest time into something that won't make money.

A lot of Rugby odds only go up very late with only major markets available.
