Australian Rugby / RA

Back to rugby, the RA really backedthemselves into a corner here by giving Folau a bit of blank cheque, despite previous precedents for breaking the Code of Conduct. They ought to act before it becomes more of a distraction for them. What's more important from a business perspective? Folau on contract, or millions from a variety of sponsors?

No one has ever supplied any evidence that he's worth the money he is paid. I think his contract is explained on the basis of a fear of missing out.
No person should be allowed to become bigger than the team or the game.
And if his Gf wants to know why he should be on the wing its because he cannot run straight

Encouraging comments from Raelene:

Talking from her perspective at the Bulldogs, Castle said there is an “organised plan to steal rugby talent” within rugby league, which is something she has seen first hand. This apparently has contributed to the decline of the code.
However, when she spoke on Kick & Chase, she admitted that there was a plan being created at HQ to encourage youngsters to stay in rugby.
“[This is] something I’m particularly passionate about, having understood from [my] previous role how there might be an organised plan to steal rugby talent, we need to make sure we lock it up and capture it,” Castle said.

“[We need to] ensure that we back ourselves to secure that talent to contract it and grow and develop it.
“Call it a junior Wallabies scholarship, call it an early contracting thing, that’s what we’re looking to try and implement.
“If we can pick our four best rugby stars every year and that becomes eight and becomes 12 and becomes 16, suddenly very quickly you’re actually seeding that best talent and securing it and selling the dream.
“Being a Wallaby, playing internationally, going to a World Cup; those are things perhaps the other codes can’t discuss.
“[We are] looking to see if it’s something we can implement next year.”
The plan is as yet unclear, but for all the crap we give Castle, it is a positive that she has come over from League and seen what they are doing.
On a side note, Castle also commented on the rise of World Series Rugby over in WA over the weekend, which she admitted to really enjoying after finding Australian performances in Super Rugby “incredibly difficult to watch.”
“It was great to see it finally hit the airwaves. It was a great success, they had a really good crowd there.
“It was interesting to see the Fijian team there. We are absolutely supportive of anything that continues to promote rugby in the west and we’ll continue to work closely with Andrew [Forrest] and Minderoo.”
What was a really interesting comment that she mentioned was the potential link-up that Twiggy may have with the NRC.
“The NRC will stay as a competition because we believe that is a really important part of our pathway to make sure there is a step from club rugby into the NRC into Super Rugby.
“We would like to see Andrew get involved in helping to supercharge the NRC and that’s certainly some of the conversations that we’ve had with him. That’s a way where the Western Force players can have a way to be in that pathway.”

It's actually because, even after a full season in AFL, he still can't kick the fucking ball.

Watch a single game where Bun Smuth plays (best FB in the world - easy peasy) and he kicks it regularly. Not just aimless punts somewhere in the other half. Strategic, well placed kicks.

He should play on the wing because he is a winger.

any comment on grassroots?

Grassroots development is the most important issue in Australian rugby.
It's been said many times: build from the bottom up, but its no use crying over spilt milk regarding all the cash wasted on the building from the top down strategy.

More little kids need to start playing the game at Junior Club level and in Public schools.
Rugby competitions need to be reintroduced into Public High Schools.
Achieving that is obviously easier said than done, and will cost.

Junior Clubs and Private schools are flying the flag for rugby but to state the obvious the rugby army's not strong enough in the big picture view.
It's easier to identify the problems than understanding exactly how to solve them (and how much it will cost).
Maybe Twiggy can help RA.

is that what she said?

There wasn't much given in the interview around grassroots, the question that was probably most associated was the levy and where does the money go. She danced around this a little bit, but overall she was pretty upfront and open about most issues. I thought she held herself fairly well in the interview.

Be nice if (when you guys do another pod) you could have that follow up interview with Kafer that he said he'd do. See how things are travelling on that front.

Too much time was taken up with discussing politics which is unfortunate. She handled it well and identified the social media issue as being very difficult to negotiate. She was skillfully diplomatic.

It will be interesting to see follow up interviews without focusing on unnecessary distractions because she seems to understand what needs to happen but has a mammoth task ahead of her.

It was encouraging that she complimented WSR and expressed a cooperative attitude about working with Twiggy in future. No signs of animosity at all which is the benefit of having a fresh face to take over.
It would be foolishness for RA not to work in with the guy and tap into his obvious talents and strengths, so she's at least providing hope and removing herself from the old mentality of her predecessors.

Unfortunately politics is what needs to be discussed in Australian rugby.

The backlash towards RA is really starting to grow now.

Clyde getting in on it....

Fitzimons also had a rant yesterday....

I find myself in agreement with Fitzsimmons more and more.
It worries me.
Did anyone get the message from Ms Castle that QC (Quade Cooper) is playing club because he refuses to go to another franchise? If that message was conveyed it’s a little indiscrete.
