You might have a point, but it is facile to draw major conclusions from simple data sets like these without a forensic audit.
Show me data anywhere that suggest this snapshot is inaccurate.
You keep banging on that people can't criticise because they don't have every single bit of information.
Just show us something apart from the vibe that suggests the criticism is unwarranted.

Do you need twice as many staff to have twice as much sponsorship revenue?

One of the problems rugby has in Australia is that it isn't a massive sport but I don't think that translates into requiring far less people to run it.

I'd be interested to see how much the difference between RA and NZRU Corporate costs can be attributed to the difference in market salaries between the two countries.

The ARU was a massively bloated organisation during the John O'Neill days but there was significant cost and head count cutting in the first couple of years of Pulver.

I have no real idea whether there are a whole bunch more positions that could go but I'd also be concerned that there is a real loss whether it is financial or in the development of the game if they culled more staff.

I think the general gist BH is that there are too many management types still there. Staff haven't really been mentioned as far as I can see.

I'm still waiting on an update to their strategic plan, the last one released in 2016 failed to mention cutting a Super Rugby team and scrapping the Super U20s as part of the strategic plan for growing the game.

In most jobs if you don't meet your KPI's you get shown the door.

Given from the plan the board is failing to meet their own KPI's !!!!! should they be fired!!!! but who can fire them or do they have to fall on their sword?????

Three directors including the CEO, and the COO and CFO have all left their post in the last year or so. The broom is working it's way through

He may be the Gordon president but Isnt the board supposed to independent as per the Arib Review recommendations put forward on corporate governance in the ARU

Independent in this context means that you don't hold any position within the company or any of the voting members. So officially there's no problem.

Having said that, I agree it's potentially not a good appointment for the same reason Geoff Stooke wasn't. He had to recuse himself from all the Western Force related discussion - so couldnt represent the very rugby people most important to him. And then he felt he had to resign in protest (understandably) - losing his position of influence when it's probably going to be most important

In fairness, that's a bit of nonsense. Stooke was a good appointment.

Only in the last two months or so before he resigned was Stooke asked to recuse himself and, as an honorable bloke, did so. He knew it made very little difference as he was getting rolled anyway.

Geoff Stooke obviously held no position with the Force when appointed as an independent director, or subsequently during his term on the ARU board.

So, what was the "perceived conflict of interest"?

Giving support to rugby in WA by purchasing 10 shares in the Own the Force campaign. An initiative cut off by the ARU's decision in any event, and which never got off the ground.

I am a CPA, for what that's worth. Criticise away, draw big conclusions from limited data, enjoy yourselves all you like.


I really am not interested in discussing "vibes". I will stick with hard facts. And to understand the real position of any corporation takes work, expertise, and importantly, access to all the data. Not just the pretty pictures.
