I agree and eventually it was scrapped because Brisbane and Sydney were no longer uncompetitive. They didn't need additional cash to entice players to join them.

It's seemingly coming back as part of a soft cap adjustment (can be spent on things other than players) which is very much cost of living related to allow specific teams to spend more money paying coaches.

GWS has an assistant coach living in a caravan park and the Swans have an assistant coach commuting from the Central Coast. Given their ages they generally have families and are from interstate and the pay isn't good enough to warrant relocating the entire family.
The soft cap is a joke, it’s just to protect a few marginal clubs in Vic and yeah the Swans and Giants get screwed

It is not an issue for AFL players, the next CBA will take the average earnings to 520k that excludes the fringe benefits like free cars from a sponsor, free furniture from a sponsor and all other endorsement income.

Even if Sydney’s housing stops out performing the rest of the nations from a growth perspective the chance that you will make a loss compared to other markets is slim
Sure, but the root of this discussion is Super Rugby players, not AFL

As for not making a loss by parking your money in in an asset that's potentially outperformed by other assets, that's called opportunity cost. It's like saying you can't lose money putting your money into fixed interest.. Anyway it's all speculative and i don't think potential future capital growth of property is an appropriate offset to the real increase in cost of living that's imposed on a player who had already negotiated a contract to live elsewhere.

Don’t know but it’s a long way from Gosch’s Paddock.
Is that where they train out of? I wasn’t sure so I looked it up and saw the 2021 articles about the centre of excellence at La Trobe so thought they may have moved there by now. Anyways, Goschs Paddock looks pretty much on par with Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs

Centre of Excellence will be for for women’s and youth, Rebels were training at Goschs Paddock…

That inner city area is on par with eastern suburbs, without the price.

Excuse my ignorance, the photos I saw had rob Leota and a few other rebels players front and centre so I feel a little justified in confusing the issue.

Neighbouring suburbs Prahran and St Kilda don’t have the price either? OK, as you were.

Ill leave it alone here, it wasn’t intended to be a forensic examination of the cost of living for players living within x kms of the training grounds of the two franchises, my point was that any differences weren’t that major that they couldn‘t be overcome via negotiations. All I really want is a somewhat equitable distribution of the Rebels players, and that everyone ends up happy, for the betterment of Aus rugby.

A lot of the Rebels lived in Richmond and South Yarra, a lot would walk or ride to Goosh paddock for training. Game day when having a beer before or after the game you would see them making there way to and from the stadium. Tom English was out I. South Kensington, Gibbon is in Hawthorn, was in St Kilda before that. So they all stay within 10km of the city.

The local boys were the ones fighting traffic to make training.

Yeah, suburbs are significantly cheaper than the Eastern Suburbs and even the 'cheaper' areas mentioned earlier, like Zetland and Redfern.

Anyway, I don't think it's a prohibitive issue either for recruitment; I just thought the topic was dismissed with incorrect information.

Looks like Australia A will be touring again this year.

Game against England A has been announced

The RFU has announced that England A will take on an Australia A side in autumn following their previous outing against Portugal in February.

The Twickenham Stoop will host the game, which will take place on Sunday 17 November 2024 and will kick off at 14:00 GMT.

This article in the Australian this morning is worth a read if you can get around the paywall. Funny, as I write they bring up a story about it on Ch 9

I can't help but feel this is a bit of a 'get in first' from Peter V'landys / Loig before the real World Cup in '27.

Awesome. People will then be able to look at the RWC in 27 and then think about how the League one paled in comparison. Might make some of the 'Rugby is on its arse' realize that it's only here where that applies.
