correlation doesn't equate to causation, blaming the 'adding of teams' is a convenient factor to blame when talking about the declining interest in Super Rugby. Ignoring variables like increased competition from the likes of NRL/AFL/NRLW/AFLW/Netball/BBL/NBL/NBA/NFL which have eroded supporter bases, officiating standards, speed of play, tactics and style of teams involved are all part of it and a larger factor then then number of teams. If anything, the number of teams may have accelerated the terminal decline that Super Rugby was already in at that point.

It was a comp that never could compete with the AFL or NRL. Under represented key markets letting them die on the vine and couldn’t support expansion.

It looked good in the early days as fox was desperate to lock away rugby and paid huge overs for the rights. Since that 10 year deals expired it’s been down hill for the game.

As it had no way of adapting to a changing market. The AFL now has a bigger presence in NSW and Queensland than pro rugby. Both AFL and NRL salaries have grown hugely over the time while there has been minimal growth in super rugby. Further to this there has been salary growth in major and minor professional leagues overseas so we see pro players leave and club players leave weakening the game at both levels.

Super Rugby was clearly once a very good and successful comp...

One major issue was not establishing an independent commission to run it a long time ago, and it's been hampered by the self interests of certain unions.

Prior to Covid, back in the awful time of Foxtel and a Japanese team in a South African conference, there were were several weeks when there was no prime time game on a Friday night in Australia.

Idiotic.

I think in hindsight (maybe even at the time, I'm sure there were plenty of people opposed to it) the move to 18 teams broke the comp.

Source? I havnt heard that. He's talked about a national club competition, but in the context of a 'third tier' rather than as replacment for super.

Are you talking about the News Corpse club rugby puff pieces? That's not RA or Phil's view - just News showing they could be an ally (at the right price) without blatantly promoting a competitor's product.

Just wait until RA re-sign with Stan, their standard deathriding procedure will resume!
