Re: nat sevens nickname?

The Bilbies - smaller than a Wallaby, and like sevens rugby, most of the Aus population won't have heard of them.

:lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

Don't know why, but that tickled my funny bone.

Anyway, when they are written about in the press, especially the NH papers, the 7's team are usually called Wallabies. I really have no idea if this is accurate or not! The shame of it all.....

Whatever they are called, that was a mighty effort to win in London, particularly as four or five of this years stars were not there.

i noticed they were booed and jeered a bit by the crowd in both the semi's and final, i wonder if thats just because they are Australia or whether its a continuation of the whole 'boo australia' syndrom from Hong Kong

adittionally it could be because Australia absolutely toweled England up in the pool stages

I remember Burgo starring at the Twickers 7s some years ago and getting boo-ed as well. I assume its just part of the tradition of 7s.

Yeah I was there that year and it is just the usual Boo Australia routine. Happens every tournament everywhere except Adelaide.

Stannard's form has stirred up some interest in France.
French call winning Sevens captain
May 26, 2010

JAMES STANNARD has discovered that being the skipper of a victorious Australian team has placed him in high demand. Fresh from leading Australia to their first IRB Sevens competition title in eight years in London at the weekend, Stannard was named player of the tournament. This sparked interest in the 27-year-old halfback, who has been overlooked by Australian Super 14 provinces following short stints with the Western Force and Brumbies, from numerous French clubs following the London final.

Australian Sevens coach Michael O'Connor has urged him not to make a decision until after this weekend's Edinburgh Sevens tournament in the hope an Australian province picks him up for next season. O'Connor said Stannard was a revelation, especially in taking over as captain from Pat McCutcheon, who went to Cape Town for the Waratahs' Super 14 semi-final.

At 27 and after being punted by the Force and then the Ponies, TAKE IT SON.

I am told by a long term resident of HK that the booing of Aussie began many years ago when we didn't take the series seriously and apparently had a bit of an aloof attitude to the 7's game and the others. Also as a pretty big percentage of the HK nobility are British/English/Pome wankers who apparently crap without any odour.
It just stuck from there apparently - so I am told.

The Hong Kong programs try to say it is because of their success in the 80's with Campo and Lynagh and co.

yeah, I'm not sure if we never took it seriously (pre-professional age at least). We always had the likes of Campo, Noddy, the Ellas, Poido playing.

I thought it harked back to a high tackle by one of the Ella brothers, possibly even on a local HK player, in the early 80s?

whatever it is, i think its a fantastic tradition, i do kind of whish it was against one of the other teams, but regardless it does highlight the unique game which 7's rugby is

I don't understand why he was never given more opportunities with the Brumbies?

They plucked him from the Force and he had to spend an entire season watching from the stands as Holmes and Phibbs tried to battle it out for most average halfback in the country...

He looked like he had potential when he came on against the Cheetahs... and that was it...

The name of the 7's team has been gnawing at me since this thread started! No comments from the peanut gallery, please...

Doing some internet research, which is of course where all the most accurate information is found, I have come across various mentions of the 7's team (including the ARU site) being officially called the Australian Spirit.

Can anyone else confirm this so I can move on with my life?

Yes, I thought so too, but last night on the rugby club when the guys discussed the 7's win in London the name Australian Spirit was also mentioned.

Ahem, as a paid up member of the peanut gallery, I think the peanut suggestions are MUCH better than the Spirit??? WTF??? Isn't the Australian Spirit Bundaberg Rum? I don't want all the Cane Toads and NTA to go spare on me, but that is lame. Then again, if they got a beer sponsorship we could have the XXXX Bundy and Cokes!

Quite a few years ago, there was a bit of fisticuffs between Australia and another team. That is where the booing started. Don't ask me to be more specific, because I just cannot remember, although I am pretty sure it was during the mid eighties, and David Campese was involved. But my first Hong Kong Sevens was at the old Football Club stadium in Sports Road, in 1977, and I can assure everybody that the Aussies were not being booed back then. We have always taken the tournament seriously. Ironically, the New Zealanders, during the early days of the tournament, were represented by the champion provincial Sevens team, which might be construed by some as not taking the thing seriously.
As for the other stuff, there is a reason that Hong Kong expats are known as FILTH (failed in London, try Hong Kong).
