Fuck me... What a depressing game. Yet again, the pack was beaten up front and we just dropped the ball cold when it mattered. I couldnt count how many times I would stand up and cheer only to collapse back into the seat after a turnover at the breakdown because our forwards were too slow, or we knocked the pill on. The issues with the forwards are more complicated I presume, but fucking hell, how hard can it be to hold onto the ball for a few phases? It's an issue with the whole team, not just single players.
We really are missing some brutes in the forwards (Higgers, Pocock and a fit Palu come to mind) because at the moment we are piss weak at the breakdown. I love Hooper, but he just doesnt have the impact that the bigger boys can have.
I personally thought the backs looked dangerous when they actually pieced a move together without dropping it. But then we'd make the line break and either drop the ball or hit the deck and lose it on a turnover. I personally thought Quade did quite well considering what he had to work with. Challenged the line numerous times, showed pace, intent and kicked quite well. Him and Folau combine effectively and lilo is still looking like quite an effective 12. I'm worried, however, that his kicking is almost lulling the team into a penalty goal approach where we never back ourselves... You could see Cooper calling for a quick tap but we always took the conservative option. Sometimes we just need to say "fuck it" and throw the backs the ball, especially when we can barely get out of our own half without giving a penalty away.
I would have a pretty similar team to
RoffsChoice
Slipper, Fainga'a, Kepu, Simmons, Fardy, Mowen (c), Gill, McCalman, White, Cooper, O'Connor, Lealiifano,
Horne, Cummins, FOlau
Moore,
Robinson,
Ryan,
Timani, Hooper, Genia, To'omua, Ashley-Cooper
Genia isnt imposing enough as a captain. Need some fire in the forwards too. But I really liked Izzy at fullback. He had a good game there so maybe stick with Cummins instead of Mogg and swap them...
Zander justify why Quade shouldn't be in gold? I hate this concept that when we lose, the immediate conclusion
of some is that "its quades fault, he's shit." He was actually one of our better performers.
