Mowen has to play, because we do not have any other lineout organiser.
Pathetic situation. How on earth does it come to this, that none of our leading locks is able to take the responsibility for something as fundamental as the execution of the lineout. No f-ing wonder we cannot beat anybody any more. We deserve to be 10th in the world, and probably will be, given time.

I'm looking forward to seeing Mowen in action as captain. He is organised and makes a real effort to get his troops on board, beyond the interaction with the gnomes carrying the whistle, which he does well.
The last two years has seem Genia (in super and test rugby) doing more and more - playmaker/de facto or actual 10 for the reds esp 2012 and at times for the wallabies, and the captain's hat as well. In that time he also became the guy for other teams to shut down.
A chance to focus on his game will do him good, rather than trying to do to much and carry too much of the decision making.

Mowen has been damn good at 6 for the Wallabies this year but not at 8. Why, who knows, but I think we've all been played at a different position and played better or worse. It just seems like 6 is his position but he plays 8 for the Brumbies because they can get away with it at Super Rugby level.
In terms of lineout calling, from all accounts Mowen coached the Brumbies lineout and that's where he learnt to call. Simmons seems to have been coached to call the lineout and may not be as naturally gifted as Mowen or Sharpe. I'd think Pyle would be a good choice for it, I believe he calls for the Rebels and seems to be a natural.
Speaking of the Rebels, Higgenbotham is our replacement for Palu until someone else steps up. I like Schatz but I think he, like Quirk, isn't consistent enough. McCalman has experience and never lets the team down but isn't great. We've all seen how Mowen is just out of place at 8.

I'm not going to make excuses for Mckenzie, because Deans was doing better with the same cattle. But there are just a few key pieces in the puzzle missing. Imagine if we had Pocock. He would be tackling his guts out, shutting down plays with his turn overs and leading from the front.
His integrity forces those around him to work harder by comparison. But the key piece missing is mongrel. That pack we roll out puts the fear into no one. I don't believe it is one player that brings mongrel to a pack (except the few special ones, like Collins). We are seriously missing Nau, Higgers and Pocock. I love the work Hooper and Gill bring to the pack, but they aren't having the physical impact required.

I hope nobody is expecting a sparkling game full of backline skill tonight. The weather is bloody terrible over here. Expect it to be a mistake riddled snore fest decided by the better boot.
We simply must keep the ball out of our half tonight. We don't want to give the Argies any chances to go the catch and drive from a lineout or win penalties from the scrum. It's got to be kicking for the corner, contesting fiercely at the lineout, committing numbers to the breakdown and running fairly narrow channels until the game opens up a bit. We need also to take every single point on offer. Tonight is not an occasional for an honourable loss. It must be built on focus and accuracy at the collision and smashing the opposition backwards until they get sick of it. The conditions don't especially lend themselves to flashy play, though we should still run some moves if we get good set piece ball. Let's just not push those 50/50 passes and focus on protecting the pill.

IMHO this should be how we start every test - what happens beyond the 15 minute mark depends on how well we have executed this plan.

Mowen just isn't good at picking up the ball at the back of the scrum, something probably quite important for an eight. What we really lack though is a big running unit. If one of the locks or front rowers could just consistently make good, clean ball meters we wouldn't be so worried about not having a classical no. 8.
Although I wasn't previously a fan I feel in the current climate, Timani is a valuable edition. His skills are a good fit, almost inverse to Mowen's. If you have a pack of say Simmons Timani, Higg(Fardy), Hooper (Gill), Mowen, you have 3 solid jumpers and a big runner. As has previously said, Timani is basically your "Palu" type player, he just happens to pack in the second row, now with a number 8 that jumps we can afford a lock that doesn't.

I am not saying there aren't issues, there surely are, but the Wallabies are coming of 4 straight losses to the top 3 rugby teams in the world. I may be proven wrong but I think our tally at the end of the TRC may have been better if we had played Los Pumas twice at the start of the comp and built up to the ABs rather than the other way around. I believe we will come out firing on all cylinders tonight and notch up a substantial win. From there the mission for the rest of 2013 will be to secure the no. 3 spot on the IRB rankings.

I feel you're paraphrasing my argument a bit. I agree though, from the bench is better for now, but given how our locks are going and especially with Horwill out, Timani's a chance in future games. I just hope he can be more consistent, the break he's had will do him good, he's always looked a bit like a giant mummy, what with all the bandages.
