Gear better get fit quick cos if Sivi gets a start and plays and improves the way he was playing the end of the S15, Gear aint getting back in

Far enough on Rokococo even though I've been a fan of him he just hasnt been in good enough form this year. Surprised a bit about Ranger but he's still under an injury cloud. Agree about Cory Jane regarding the Western Force it would be fantastic for the Force if they get him. Despite any of the odd selections its still a pretty scary looking team there.

Still a great squad, but some of those selections are baffling.

No Crockett? That is astounding. No Jane? He's been routinely excellent for the All Blacks. A few of the others are fair enough judgement calls, but I think Henry is too conservative in this instance.

With the wingers, it should be noted that Toeava and Kahui have played a good deal of their AB rugby on the wings.

Guildford will be closely watched after last night's performance given their depth in fast wingers but to be fair practically every key player on either side made errors in that cauldron of a game. Staggered Crocket isn't in.

A little surprised that Nonu got the gig over Fruen given his poor season, but then Nonu seems to be poor at provincial level every year.

There's also the fact that they play different positions so weren't really competing for a spot. Fruean's been left out for Kahui, not Nonu.

There is still the opportunity for fringe players to impress during the ITM cup. Some great games in that competition.

Rococoko is past his best so fair enough. Fruean should be in the squad, better than Sonny Bill. Sonny may offload a lot, but a lot of them are to no one. Ranger unlucky. But the biggest omission is definitely Alby Mathewson. By far the best hal;fback in NZ this season. As a Wallabies fan I am extremely happy with this squad, Aus have a chance at WC.

the force seem to continually get good overseas players, but they always injured.
2010 - Andre Pretorius
2011 - Willie Ripia and David Smith
2012 - Corey Jane?

Is Ripia still signed for the Force for 2012?

I remember one U20's world cup I watched. The final was Aus vs NZ. That day Guildford was awesome. Ever since then I've thought he has so much potential. Bad for an Aussie, but good for NZ that they've seen his potential.

Crockett. Mathewson and Ranger are the three omissions I am most surprised by. Fruean will get his chance in a year or so but is still fairly raw.

Pedant alert .. MacIntosh doesn't play tighthead.. ever.

IMO Mils is past his used by date - watching the key Aussie try scoring highlights of last year and he's implicated in many of them, quite often left for dead.
Would've been more worried by Jane and his charge-down abilities

Ben Franks plays tight and loose head so I'm not surprised a like for like replacement for Woodcock i.e.Crockett is deemed a luxury in a 30 man squad. There seems no out and out specialist 7 replacement for Richie either which is a risk. Messam and Thompson can both play 7 but ....

Hoeta plays more of the loosehead lock roll fulfilled superbly by Thorn and also offers a high work rate and mobility about the park. Like Thorn, he'll never be a threat on opposition lineout ball. Also, Williams just hasn't been that impressive; he is nowhere near the player he was before injury. All-in-all, the NZ locking stocks aren't that great.

Slade is the better option at 10 over the mercurial McAllister, or the flakey Cruden.

Sivivatu's omission is the biggest surprise. There is probably no other player in world rugby other than Quade who can so consistently beat the first man. He is a a devastating counter-attacker, links well with his back three and goes looking for work off the wing. There have been rumors of a fallout with Smith/Henry and a recent report that Weepu and he have effectively been sent for additional conditioning work (fat camp). Gear just doesn't join the line or link with his back three and his doesn't quite have the aerial defense or work rate that Henry seems to like in his back three. I fully expect there to be a swap before the official WC squad is announced and that Sivivatu's omission in an attempt to like a rocket up his arse. Toeava seems to have secured the right wing spot upon his return (Guildford in for cover) and it will be Sivivatu/Gear contesting for the left wing wing with Dagg covering the back three off the bench.

Alby Mathewson is the worst kicking/defending 9 in the comp. His box kicks are atrocious and he takes no pressure off his 10. He is too great a risk. If the pack is well on top, then he is great, but NZ need a 9 that can take the pressure off when the going gets hard and that's where his game falls apart.

Obviously, it's a strong squad but there seem to be no pointers in it's selection to any change in tactics. We know what the Boks will bring, more of the same but effective minimal risk shit. The Wallaby system has been building nicely. The ABs have said they need to tweak their and stay ahead of the competition again in order to lift the WC. It'll be fascinating to se what they come up with as I dont think there are any clues from selection.

Fully agree. I think he owes his position to being part of the core leadership group that has been established since the last WC (McCaw, Thorn, Mealamu, Hore, Carter, Mils), but he has lost so much speed and his defensive positioning is definitely an issue. Dagg, Jane may offer more in terms of pace/skill set but Mils leadership and experience in big games will get him the nod.

Ranger is so explosive but his decision making isn't the best sometimes. He really is a high risk/high reward player. He was only going to get the nod through the injury of more established players ahead of him.

Really? Seems like a level headed guy but I've seen f-all big leadership and the Chiefs ain't exactly killed it of late in the clever decision making department.

If he's really in there for that then they really are stuffed for leadership outside of Richie and Read
