Afternoon vs Night games

There has been a fair bit of noise about this of late. Obviously on the back of the Tahs hosting the Saders as well as today's test.

The discussion obviously has different factors in the context of Super Rugby & Test matches

Speaking from a Melbourne perspective, I can't see us having a day-time game on a Saturday, unless there is a club bye. The club ranks obviously make up a decent proportion of the supporters here. The same could probably be said for Perth.

I can't seem to find any indication of kick-off times for the Lions Tour, so could we have a day-time match?

I hate day games, I cant think of many spectacles that are better in daylight compared to under lights at night.

I realise that this goes against the grain as most prefer day games but I just dont see the appeal, with night games you can do all of your daily chores/jobs/work etc and then go home and watch the game or go out with your mates and watch the game.

Saturday afternoon also clashes with club games which is short sighted of the ARU as you cant go to your Rugby Club and watch the game with your clubmates

I like the odd afternoon game, it takes me back to the days when they all were, but I wouldn't want to see too many. I think the balance they have now is about right.

I'm a fan of day games because the skill level is often higher. Dry ball, better handling and teams often show a bit more adventure. On a fine day, I also find it better as a spectator at the ground too -- warmer, more pleasant. Some parts of the world are bloody miserable to watch rugby after the sun goes down.

I do realise that it's not terrific for the players in club games. But that can be sorted out with scheduling, so it's not a train wreck.

I prefer games all though out the day if possible. A typical Saturday starts with S15/TRC (depending of time of season) game in the morning then going to a 6Ns/HEC game in the afternoon (if I have tickets) then watch the evening then night game on TV. A full day of rugby suits me best.

In terms of games I attend it depends on the day of the week, Mon-Fri night games are great. Had many a great night in Donnybrook in freezing weather on a Friday. On the weekend I prefer an afternoon kick off as it's more natural to have the big games in the afternoon up here, unless you're French who love their night games.

Great in theory but did you see the Wales - Aus game ? Yikes.

Good call on the spectator experience though.

I enjoy a mixture of both evening and afternoon games. Took my kids today, wouldn't take them if it was a night game (theyre both under 5). Also went with friends who don't have kids. They went to lunch and some pubs before the game. Went to the game then out for more drinks and dinner. Means they could have a great day out without boozing up until the early hours of the morning.

why cant stadiums work out the maths that would allow a roof to cover the field in either full shade or full sunlight for an afternoon game? My biggest beef is with the shadow line ruining the viewing on tv

Easily sorted: club, school and juniors all day on Saturdays, Super Rugby and tests on Sunday afternoons with a 2:00pm kickoff.

yes but there are ways of working out the angle for both the summer and winter shadow lines, you would just have to be able to cover the ground for both extremes and everything else would fit in between, the mayans could manage it thousand of years ago so surely we could too?

I think they should aim for one game per round (or every 2nd round) on a Sunday next season, alternate between Aus and NZ. 3 days of Rugby on the weekend.

I think they stuffed the scheduling up with the Rebels and Force fixtures. We went up against the Grand Prix while the Force went up against a West Coast Eagles game.
