2020 Super Rugby Round 1 (REDUX): Reds v Waratahs

We affectionately call this game the Festival of Hate and for the last 5 or 6 years it has felt like the name is a little ironic. I have watched the game back a couple of times now and it is great to see the hate back. Can only be good for Oz rugby that the players care as much as they did on Friday night.

Getting you head driven out your arse is how a prop learns the reality of his work, days on the training field doesn't do it
Yes. But it also loses matches. Bring him on off the bench then work him up to a starter in a year or so. The scrum was much better when he came off. He's only 19. No need to rush him

The young blokes are really bringing some passion back to rugby. I thought winning meant a lot to Wilson and McReight - just like Lolesio seemed pumped in the Brumbies game.

It's good to see and i think Rennie would be mad not to get blokes with this kind of passion in and around the team.

Tiann that came on off the bench at prop is also only 19, he seemed to go ok once on.

What’s the go with the prop stocks with the Tahs ? Having two 19 year old props in your match day squad seems a little unusual.

^mismanagement in planning/recruiting Is what happened. Which Penney has inherited.

My point is it's easier to hone your craft against the other teams reserves rather than throw him in against Tupou. Tiann went well of the bench with limited time and against tiring/second choice opposition. Hell be better for it, but Bell's confidence must be shot after that. If Robertson was fit he would have at least been on the bench. All squads are skinny for depth ATM

EDIT. Probs wring thread by now .

Agree, if you look at the Reds , Josh Nasser gets very little game time at this stage of his career. His work around the park if fine , but struggles at Super level come scrum time . It’s a part of his game that still needs development and he has a couple of years on both Bell and Tiann . Don’t think many Reds’ supporters would feel confident with Nasser starting come scrum time .

The Reds have also had Dane Zander who's had to play a few games this year as the Feao's (Dave Feao and Feao Fotuaika) have been injured.

I can't believe how well the Tahs defence stepped up

Yeah they look to have really drilled that. At the moment they look like a very keen enthusiastic top club/colts side

Also had some moves off the lineout that wouldve taken some practicing.

NSFW playing hard.

Can't say I like it!

Can't say I like it one bit!

Surely someone could do a Roy and HG style simulcast so we can watch the vision and listen to something more palatable to our ears.

I can do a passable Damo and Darren accent but you wouldnt like the hail of profane scorn I rain down upon NSFW for 80 minutes.

ah fuckit, for NSFW matches I nominate W.Oldboy, Zero and Bumbreeze Runner.

SPARE NO ONE.

I enjoyed the game and was pleasantly surprised by how well the Tahs played. I gave them very little chance at the start, thought they might have got pumped by 40 after Bell got carded and they fell asleep on the McDermott try but they bounced back well and were really competitive.

Bell is a great young player. I have no issues with him starting. Our scrum has been pumped by the Reds for years. He'll keep learning from that and is becoming a better player rapidly. Tactically you probably should just concede a pushover try there and not give up a try and a yellow card. It's certainly a hard thing to do to capitulate and let the opposition walk over for a pushover try but it's essentially a fait accompli once you've given up the first few penalties and your scrum is getting demolished.

Overall I thought it was a cracker. Really tough, but also some beautiful interplay variations of the lineouts, and some good expressive footy in phase play and off set piece.

Love that we got the result, and feel if we lost it would set us back a long time. I also feel this win will be the catalyst game that drives QLD rugby back to the top. The kids now know they not only belong but it is their time.

Michael Wood will enter this team soon, and you will see his synergy with Wilson and McrReight. Can't wait.

Stray thoughts on Tahs:

-Thought they were bloody good, and looked well coached.
-Tough in the forwards, but let down by their scrum and lineout to a lesser degree.
-Bell is a great prospect but too green, should ne developed like Nasser - but he has a much higher ceiling.
-The Young kiwi prop who went to Ippy grammar looks just as good, great set of young ones there.
-Swinton was tough, and it was the first time that I could actually see that he could become a bully at this level. Great to see.
-Hooper was ok, but I don't rate him.
-Ramm was bloody great! Hes a very good young winger.
-Newsome was good too I thought, didn't realise he had such good footwork. He has much more potential than I ralised.
-Maddocks looks so much better at the back, should never play wing again. I was beginning to lost belief, but he was bloody excellent.

The Red boys:

-Wowee, we are coming!!
-I've been saying it for a while, to a fair bit of chagrin on here for some reason but the current Reds backrow is going to become mythical in QLD. Would be very happy if they are the national backrow in coming years.
-Swinton was good, but give me Wrongerz any day - he looks a natural undersized 6. Very much like Dusatoir.
-Fraser had four turnovers on starting debut, I am not sure anyone doubted him, but he has already arrived in a big way.
-Wilson was "quiet" and still one of the best easily. Grunty try to add to his day. Both he and Fraser are incredible carries. Makes a world of different.
-Tate was at his best, easily best 9 prospect in country.
-JOC (James O'Connor) was out of sync, but still good and very important. Needs to kick from now on, and he wants to do it.
-Hegarty is solid, but not up to it. The missed kicks was atrocious and should have hurt us.
-Jock goes to fullback next week, and Sautia to wing.
-Very keen to see Flook play, wraps are enormous, but happy for him to bid his time.
-Daugunu looked electric. He is becoming a really gun winger, and has more upside than I realised.
-Paisami is just a sensation. Plays like Frank Bunce.
-Love Hamish, and think he add absolutely plenty. Love that he is a bushy, and plays like one. We need more bushies to reach our potential, and QLD should do more to find them in my opinion because they are out there.

Finally, Brad Thorn is doing so much more than coaching at this club. He is dragging QLD rugby out out of the mire and I hope he stay long enough to see this group reach its potential. I am so proud of him being our coach, and think we are only just seeing the fruit of the hard work he has putting in preparing the soil and sowing the seeds in the recent years.

Winning this game, while expected, is a massive step forward and what I believe will the catalyst of the next part of our development curve.

QLD rugby is healthy, and not far away from thriving.

^ Solid summary. Will Harrison Is also worth a mention for his solid control in the Tah’s backline.
