Luckily it's not their first game of rugby. Maybe testing combinations, but for mine there were better in the competition (u20's).
Now we have one less competition game to test combinations. Big potential problem with the depth of the front row.

When will Australian rugby stop playing reputation and start playing form? Also stop playing people out of position! Both of these things can be so costly in test matches. Let hope another team isn't cruelled by these types of decisions.

Funny enough I think there are a few more reputations to come. Hope those reputations don't also come with attitude. Agree with you Sage it never worked last year, rather a TEAM of rugby players than a team of INDIVIDUALS.

If that's the better players we are in strife. Players out of positions in the backs, pigs picked on a name and last years reputation. I really thought this coach was going to stick to his guns and pick on form. FAT chance. Seams he has a touch of Chieka about him and is sticking with his good old boys club. That said the boys put their hands up and did their best.
Number 9 played well. 12 hit some good lines. Scrum was strong. Back row was ordinary on ball, Scott Young put some good hits on and carried ok, Hewitt popped some nice pills in the second half, Number 7 was rubbish as far as a 7 goes played like a 6. Aussies need a hard on baller at 7 not a bean poll.
Any news on replacement 10?
Who are some players to come in and sort some of the scrappy play?

That was just a diabolical game, and the cloven hoofed one was in the middle with the whistle. Must have been one of the most pedantic refereeing exhibitions for a long long time. Looked like every first phase was under advantage for either a dropped ball or a penalty, and after one or two phases later was brought back for the mistake/infringement. Some of the forward passes and penalties were only in his eyes imo.

From the players, both Johnson-Holmes and Scott-Young had strong games (must be the hyphen). Swain and Swinton added a touch of toughness when they came on. Was good to see the back of Jooste when he was replaced. Was one of the most ineffective games I've seen from any player. The two centres had some good touches but there should have been a whole lot more against that opposition.

Cron certainly has a lot of work on his hands to lift this side.

He looked like that in his limited onfield time this year.
Whatever injuries he's picked up I think have spooked him: this is the problem with the lack of hard competition through the ages and such a short U20s season: You only find the true mettle of a player after they have been put on the pathway.

Australia have battled wind, rain and a physical Samoan side to get their Oceania U20s Championship campaign off on the right foot with a 43-20 victory at Bond University on Friday night.

The Australians scored seven tries to two but struggled at different times for cohesion and the pattern that head coach Simon Cron would like to see them play with at these titles.

They led 24-10 at the break and continued to work away in the second half to give the final scoreline.

It must be said that the Kiwis looked the much more impressive side on the first night of the championships in the earlier game v Fiji but the Aussies will be much better for the run in the often trying conditions.

Scrumhalf Ryan Lonergan did some good things and was rewarded with a try while loose head prop Harry Johnson-Holmes worked hard throughout the evening.

Angus Scott-Young was another in the middle of a lot of the good things that the Aussies were able to achieve in tough conditions.

Liam Wright is a great player, but doesn't cut it as a 7. Has always been more of a 6. As mentioned above, we need a breakdown specialist. Fraser McReight or Connor Moroney from QLD have that turnover ability.

Backs didn't really get many opportunities to show their potential, maybe new combinations, bit optimistic bout selections against Fiji. Probably give the bench a start and rest some for Saturday. Fullback showed some speed taking the ball forward. Hope the backs get some good ball against Fiji. See if there's a spot for them to JWC.

Couple of good changes in that side for no other reason than to see a different style of rugby ie, Swinton, Swain a good hard working rugged second row. Allen coming into the backrow makes it a very aggressive and certainly abrasive trio, it will be a competition between the to Angus's to see who pulls off the biggest hit.
Good to see the centre combination as it should be. If Jooste takes it to the line a bit to commit the defence it should provide a bit of time and space for the robust centre pairing to bust some gaps and unleash the speed men out wide.
Looks to be a better balanced side. Good luck boys.

Can only think now that Jooste must have been playing to instructions against Samoa. If so, I have some real doubts about the quality of those instructions, and it would seem out of character for Cron after his standout attacking season with Norths last year.

Interested at the selection of Riley at 13 given he's such a good player. I would've thought he was more likely to end up a starter on the wing when Perese comes back in so was hoping he could get some game time there to try claim that starting wing spot come georgia (as he has mostly played 13 and a little bit of schoolboy rep on the wing?).

I thought Ikatau was really good the other night too, I think he's electric.
