Brian, you've shown your true colours in your anti-QLD rants and when pressed to name the players from NSW who would have made a difference you've come up with nothing.
How about you actually put your money where your mouth is, name these NSW players who would have stated in the XV and who would have made a difference.
I'll have a go, but unfortunately I can't name exclusive NSW replacements. When Gold is involved I try to rise above the Festival of Hate.
Front row. I reckon Alex
Mafi or Ed
Craig (in that order) should have been on the bench as a #2. The starters are probably as good as we have got. Vunipola
Fifita may be the best option left in NSW but I have seen him getting bent out of shape in recent games, and think that in the long term he should transfer to hooker (if he could throw darts like Ed Craig does). There are some who really rate Sa'aga and Lomax but IMHO after Orr and Sandell, pickings are slim and we've probably got the pick of the bunch in Italy on the bench and holding the tackling bags.
Second row. I think Lukhan Lealaiaulotu-Tui rawness was exposed. Possibly Winter to start. Would like to see Hanigan at 6 but then who would be our locks? With another season under his belt and continued exposure to top level coaching, Lukhan has the potential to surpass Big Willie, From what I saw of him in the CHS II team last year, he has made absolutely stunning progress.
The Other One (Nick K) could be useful to have in the squad for his utility but I'm not sure that he could force his way into the starting lineup.
Loose Forwards. Would have liked to see a more abrasive #6. While Lolo F can go missing and seagull at times and he has a bit to learn about the technical aspects of #6 play, he was missed, but team rehab is a fact of life. Would have liked to see Ned H get a gig there but who is in the engine room if that is the case? I like the look of
McCalman. He has a very efficient style to his game and can read the game well with a habit of popping up at the right place and time but he really isn't big enough to be a 6 or 8 and is behind Gunn as a 7. I don't think NSW have any better players that warranted selection.
Halfback. Mitchell
Short probably should have been there, on the bench if not starting. Nucifora seemed to be the lucky one.
Five eighth. I reckon the best we have were there. I have not seen him play for a long time, but I can only think that possibly Corey
Tulloch could have done a Bradbury.
Centres. Jack
Redden seems to be the off course substitute for this role, and while I have my reservations over Sione T, mainly related to inexperience and the way he was used by the Coach, I reckon the current mob in Italy probably deserve their slot. Speaking of inexperience, another bloke straight out of school who was originally selected but was injured is Henry
Hutchison. He started for the Wicks first grade on Saturday and the reports from the Wicks faithful were very favourable. He appears to be fit enough, perhaps he should have been on the plane as a late replacement. Duncan P is an interesting case in point. He is definitely talented and a work in progress, and the Junior World Cup is not really the place for a Work in Progress but who else? I thought he seemed to go OK against the Saffers.
Not sure if he is up to Aust U20 standard this year but how did Latu
Latunipulu miss out in a spot in the NSW U20 squad? He has been playing First Grade Footy for Randwick all year, and they are no mugs when it comes to talent identification and development. A name for next year perhaps.
Back Three. I think Campbell Magney may have been thrown into the deep end a year or two too early. From what I have seen of him at NRC, Super Rugby, he has shown some good pace but lacks the polish and native game cunning to really cut it at the level he is at this year. Tyson Davis was rated by many, but I thought he was defensively frail, but with Harry
Jones in Team Rehab, who else do we have? Christian
Yassmin has some pace but again looked a bit raw during the Oceania Tournament games. I really like Joey The Whippet
Fittock but this year would be a year too soon for him. Maybe Patrick
James could have been useful to have. How has he been going in Club footy?
Having played First Grade Rugby in a number of jurisdictions, I can say that standards vary widely from place to place, and also from club to club within a competition. Blanket statements that they should all have played or be playing First Grade Rugby serve little purpose in establishing a benchmark, although there are benefits in young fellas getting belted around from time to time by grizzly veterans of the game.
In short, I'd have taken Short for Nucifora, Mafi for McInnerney, Hutchison for Tuipolotu, Jones for Davis, but 3 of those were not fit when the plane left.
Given the state of the cattle in the mustering yard, I think Coach Thompson hasn't done too bad a job.
