No Jim Stewart. Is he too old or injured?

How good is our Talent Spotting and player development model (AKA the Pathway)?

This years U20 cohort were U16 in 2010.
Gaggerland Archives reveal the lads were the "elite" U16's in 2010 in NSW.

How many made it to U20's in 2014?
Where did those in this years NSW U20's who were not selected in 2010 U16's come from?

HJ, if i am right, there should be a few more highlights in your list above:

- Lalakai Foketi is playing for the southern states side after being picked up by the rebels
- Cliton Gutherson is playing U20 for Manly
- Allan Ala'alatoa i think played for the Gen Blue side (i think)
- Jim Stewart is in the mix, but i believe still injured
- Reece Hodge played for Aus 20 last year (what has happened to him)

On another note, i noticed someone saying that there is an issue with so many of last years school boys in the side, i would ask the question, how many of the older boys are currently injured (or playing elsewhere) or ask the reasons why so many are there in the first place?

Allan Ala'alatoa is with the Brumbies. Mike, his older brother, is with Gen Blue. I believe Reece Hodge is still recovering from injury.

A squad of 23 (named above) were sent to Ballymore, but 28 are going to Canberra, next weekend, so there are 5 to be added.
My observation is, that seeing that NSW has dominated the U18 Champs
for the past two years, I expect we will do the same in the U20's.

Eyes and Ears

Bob Davidson (42)
It may not play out that way as QLD have done well in U16s the last 5 years and perhaps QLD have struggled at Schools as their boys finish a year earlier.

I think the "younger fellows" from 2011 Under 16s - ? who could very well be there next year - as well? - should also get a mention!

Heard in the dispatches Fiji A pumped NSW Colts 49 to 26 at Ballymore today- understand (second hand info) it was 49 - nil at one stage and the bench appeared to pay dividends last 20 minutes. I believe one coach said to the group (previously) you need to be pumped before you can pump others. there we go!

OK.
Some of the 46 kids from 2011 Under 16's in the 2014 NSW U20 squad been selected "early".
What about the rest of that cohort? If you are going to combine the 92 U16's from 2011/2012 into the "elite pool" then 16 being selected for reps @ U20 level for NSW or other Teams, means a few have made it who were "unknown" to the
super scouts, and a fair stack have missed out on making the step up to the next level (more than 70).

Of the Ted SH "5 or 6 names":
Lalakai Foketi. fair point but another point is he is lost to NSW. Good thing that he is still in the Mix for Aust Rugby.
Cliton Gutherson. U20 for Manly is not NSW level as he was in the U16 cohort.
Allan Ala'alatoa. See comment on Lalakai. Same applies.
Jim Stewart. Probably injured.
Reece Hodge. Probably still injured. IIRC he had quite a bad broken leg in the Colts 1 GF last year.

There are legitimate reasons why kids fall off "the pathway". I'd reckon Jobs, Study, Travel and Injury are the main ones.

One of the points in posting the U16 "class of 2010" is to support the oft mentioned philosophy that cream can and will rise to the top, even if it is overlooked at U16 level.

Many posters seem to believe that if a boy is not in the NGS, the JGS, State U16 National Championship teams, or in NSW I or II (at Open schoolboy footy) then they have no hope of making it as a professional Rugby player, or into semi-pro footy like 1st Grade colts or Grade.

How many kids in that 20's squad did not play 16's rep or go to a GPS or CAS School?
3?
One was a country rep who played combined states, and another,a Victorian rep who played Oz Schools.
That leaves one.
Hugh,your pathway is fucked!

Edit:
That one is a centre.
Jim Stewart is injured and would be expected to be selected in front of him,as would both the Mungo converts who both also played 16's.
So the adjusted number of under 20's that were selected without a pedigree.............
zero.

No of Non Aust Schoolboys = 11
No of Aust A without being Aust Schoolboy = 2

No not representing NSW I or NSW II at the Aust Schoolboys Champs = 8 (Pulver, Patterson, Croke, Vest = Combined States, Kavapalu = Vic)
No not at Aust Schoolboys in 2012/2013 = 3

Edit: Can't count.:( Also found a Combined States 2012 Team list. Numbers adjusted.

No Big Arse,
14 were Oz/Oz A reps.
19 out of 23 were selected in either State teams or Combined States. So 4 of the 23 did not participate at the Schoolboy champs.
The 2 centres,reserve outside back,and reserve prop?

The 2 centres were selected in the 20's squad, after at least 2 defections to League, one injury and one move interstate.
Patterson also had a players in front of him that were injured or defected, that enabled his selection.

So if your point is, you can still be selected for reps if you are not identified as a Schoolboy star.
You are absolutely correct,if you can rely on the 4 in front of you to fall off the map.(And in one case,it didn't hurt that the coach is employed at his former School)

As an aside,I'm glad that Patterson got a gig,IMO he deserved selection in the NSW squad in 2012.

What is the background on Abrahams, Fainga'a, and Fakai? Might have to have a quick look at the Colts 2013 playing lists on the NSW RU website. Standby.

Benson Fakai was a Centre/Wing for Manly Colts 1 2013 (runner up premiers).
Ellis Abrahams was playing for Newington 1st XV in 2013 and seems to be with the Marlins in 2014.
