Both Jankies and Taute next year Stormers plus Deon Fourie (he'll make the Bok squad for EYT) will stay. Not sure about Grant now. Probable Stormers team next year.
15 Taute/Joe P/Aplon
Wings: Habana, Aplon, vd Heever
Midfield: JdV/JdJ/Taute
10 Jankies/Grant
9 Duvenhage/Groome/Schreuder
8 Vermeulen/Sinclair
7 Schalk/Kolisi/Elstadt/Rhodes
6 Fourie/Carr
Locks:Etsebet/Bekker/Steenkamp/Elstadt/Rhodes
3 Malherbe/Cilliers/Harris
2 Liebenberg/Fourie/Scarra
1 Ginga/Carstens/Kritzinger

That is a frightening squad! Unless you get some injuries there are going to be some seriously pissed off players when the finals come round and they have to choose a best 22. Blind side flanker: One position available, Burger, Kolisi and Elstadt all wanting a spot.

Elstadt can move to lock, Burger 6 /7, Kolisis 7 or 8, Vermeulen 7 or 8, Carr 8 or 6. Not sure if they'll sign Sinclair. He have a good CC season. Luckily we have our Vodacom Cup to defend, so expecting the extras to play there.

I thouyght Elstadt preferred lock? In any case, if Bekker keeps breaking down like he has been he will get a trot come finals time after all.

Elstadt played flank all of his career till the Stormers start using him in lock in 2011. We have some good locking stock in the junior ranks. Even Armandt have been good in this years CC and can also slot into both positions.

Lions to confirm mass exodus

Cape Town - The Stormers will benefit the most from the Lions' exit from Super Rugby in 2013, snapping up at least three players.

The Lions will announce the future plans of several of the Johannesburg-based union's players in a special press conference on Wednesday morning, and according to thesupersport.com website, Lions acting CEO Ruben Moggee will announce the folllowing:

Tighthead Pat Cilliers - to sign with the Stormers (permanent)
Flank Michael Rhodes - to sign with the Stormers (permanent)
Flyhalf Elton Jantjies - to sign with the Stormers (loan agreement)
Centre Lionel Mapoe - to sign with the Bulls (loan agreement)
Lock Franco van der Merwe - to sign with the Sharks (loan agreement)
Centre Jaco Taute - to sign with either the Stormers or Sharks

On a more positive note, the Lions have signed Bulls flank Warwick Tecklenburg and Blue Bulls and former SA Under-20 lock Franco Mostert.

There seems to be a loan function in place which really defeats the purpose of promotion/relegation.

Can the SA system really work promo/relegation properly? I'm sure plenty of the loaners won't be too keen to come back if they find there feet at a different franchise (like what happened to Nathan Charles at the Force).

Surprisingly, it doesn't seem like many Lions are going to the Kings, which is where you'd expect the Lion's share of them to go (no pun intended).

Interesting times for SA, they really jumped the go with this new franchise by 4 or 5 years didn't they.

Its important to take into account that SA players income is from their CC provincial contracts. No central contracting like NZ.

Michael Killian and Maku went to the Kings. The Lion players have contracts which they have to obey and both Jantjies and Tautes contracts will run out at the end of next year when they'll have to decide if they will stay at the Lions or go elsewhere and can sign where ever they want to. Butch James is at the Sharks.

They loaned a couple of players who are still on contract out unless the articles I've read are incorrect.

What do those players do for the promo/relegation games?

That seams like it's a system ripe for all kinds of exploitation.
No not at all. You have to understand that SA have a provincial contracting system in place and the players had to get authorization from the Lions to play on loan for the other franchises in the S15. Obvious the Lions will on let them go for the S15 and they will be back at the Lions for the promotion/relegation and CC season. Some of them is out of contract and can go wherever they want to.

I understand that but hypothetically you could have a player play a season for the Kings and then turn around for the do or die promotion/relegation match against them a week or two later (not to mention I'm sure plenty of Boks won't be available). I believe there is at least 1 or 2 players in this very situation. It's not wrong but it's sort of silly.

I get SA's provincial contracting system but this new system seems to have been the straw that breaks the camel's back in regards the interlink between provincial and super rugby.

Look the Lions contracting has been on the boil in the past when Luddick and Alberts joined the Sharks and Jac Fourie joined the Stormers/WP. They have been patched up and Jantjies for example have a clause in his that he can play elsewhere if the Lions dont play at S15 level. Mostly our lot have a CC and S15 contract at his province.

Lions signings
Sport24
The Golden Lions have signed a host of new players for the 2013 season, the union said on Thursday.
The new players were already involved in current pre-season planning, assistant coach Johan Ackermann said in a statement.
"I am very happy these players have decided to join us and further their rugby careers here at the Lions," Ackermann said.
"I am looking forward to working with them as I saw potential in each and every one of them."
Lionel Cronje, Franco Mostert, Jacques van Rooyen, Robbie Coetzee, Hugo Kloppers, JJ Breedt, Stokkies Hanekom and Kobus de Kock were named as the eight players to have recently joined the union.
"I trust they will feel at home at the Lions and enjoy their time on and off the field. I also believe that they will work hard and make our Lions supporters proud," Ackermann said.
He said the new signings would form part of the team participating in the Lions Challenge series, taking place from January to August 2013, and some of them would also be part of the union's Currie Cup campaign.
