Allister Coetzee (Gallo)
Johannesburg - A few weeks ago, when Rassie Erasmus departed as director of rugby, many DHL Stormers supporters would have feared the worst, but those negative feelings don’t appear to have been shared by the coaches and players.
On the day it was officially confirmed he would not be filling the Springbok coaching position many thought was his for the taking through much of last year, Stormers coach Allister Coetzee looked decidedly upbeat. And he looked that way for good reason.
Although it is early days, and there is still a month before the proper season kicks off, so far the performance of the team has not shown any signs of being affected by the off-the-field shenanigans rumoured to be diverting the Western Province union behind the scenes.
Coetzee is a good coach and while Erasmus was a strong member of the management and brought X-factor, the former Springbok assistant did go it alone for much of last year – and with considerable success. Being the first winner of the South African conference in Super Rugby and ending second on the log when injuries forced you to use five different flyhalves is nothing to scoff at, and neither was the achievement in the Currie Cup, where injuries and World Cup call-ups meant the team that made the semifinals was essentially an under-21 team.
Many of those youngsters are coming through now, and so are others who are the product of the succession planning that Erasmus was so good at. The 28-6 win over the Lions in the DHL Series game at Newlands on Friday saw some of those players shining, with flanker Siya Kolisi carrying on the promise showed in the last domestic season.
Perhaps the one to watch out for though is No4 lock Eben Etzebeth. Last year Rynhardt Elstadt, another youngster, bolted almost out of the blue – he had been a blindside flanker for most of his earlier career – to establish himself as an established and much feared second row partner for Andries Bekker who played the Bakkies Botha role in the Stormers engine room.
After playing the first two warm-up games of 2012, and having added to his already considerable bulk in his off-season conditioning, recent age-group player Etzebeth looks like he can easily do this season what Elstadt did last year. Admittedly it was a scrumhalf on the receiving end, but the way he drove back Michael Bandiseo several metres was frightening to behold, and several other Lions players were on the receiving end during the match.
Always careful not to build up players too much in front of a Cape media that he fears is too quick to make his team champions and his players Springboks, Coetzee was careful to choose his words when speaking about Etzebeth’s potential.
“Look guys, Eben Etzebeth is not a Springbok yet, not by any stretch of the imagination, but boy, I have been really pleased with his progress and the contribution he has made in these pre-season games and he has incredible potential,” said Coetzee.
“Last year we saw what impact Rynhardt (Elstadt) made at No4 lock and now we have a player who can back him up. We have depth there, in a very important area, and that is pleasing to me.”
It was too early to tell how much depth he has at flyhalf, which was where all the injuries happened last year, for Gary van Aswegen was playing his first game after a long injury lay-off. He dropped a few balls and did not put his stamp on the match, but then he was also playing behind a scrum that was on the back foot for much of the night.
Not that Coetzee or captain Schalk Burger were too concerned about the set-scrums, even though they were the Achilles heel last year and what saw them hit a dead-end in the semifinal against Crusaders.
“There has been a change of emphasis in the engagement at the scrums as per directive from the Sanzar referees,” said Coetzee.
Instead of the engagement being initiated from the back, from the No8, we have now been instructed that it has to be initiated by the front row. This is a big adjustment that has to be made and we were only informed about it today.”
The Lions would have been pleased with their scrumming effort, nonetheless, and it partly off-set a horrible night at the lineouts, where the Stormers were dominant.
“For us it was just important to get a hit out,” said their coach John Mitchell. “We didn’t expect to be where the Stormers are as they have played one more game than us. That said, I was disappointed with our attack and there is some work to be done there.”
The Stormers play the Cheetahs in their next DHL Series game at Newlands on Saturday evening.
EtSeBet. Write the name down.

Etzebeth sure have a lot of grunt in the vains. His dads name is Skattie and uncle Cliffie who played prop for WP on his day. The Etzebeth broers antics on and off the field would made Bakkies jeolous on their day. In fact Bakkies could have learned the properse head butt from Skattie. Young Eben grew up in Goodwood, says it all. Yster this kid.

Cape Town - A few young hopefuls will have their last chance to impress this week ahead of the Stormers selection of a 26-man squad to usher in the 2012 Super Rugby season against New Zealand's Hurricanes in three weeks.
Stormers head coach Allister Coetzee said on Monday that players would have a final chance to prove their worth against the Cheetahs at Newlands on Saturday.
After the Cheetahs match, the Stormers would decide on their Super Rugby squad and those players would play a final warm-up match against the Southern Kings at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in mid-February.
"Many of the players who played in the first warm-up match against Boland two weeks ago will get a run against the Cheetahs this weekend," said Coetzee.
"I want to be fair to all the players in the expanded squad to stake their claims and one can do that best in a match situation.
"We go into this match with very different objectives than we had for last week's Lions match. The most important thing will be to improve on the things that we didn't do well."
The mood in the camp at the team's headquarters in Bellville was fairly upbeat.
Things took a turn for the better when three of the franchise's 'big guns' - Andries Bekker, Reinhardt Elstadt (both locks) and eighthman Duane Vermeulen - joined Monday's training stint.
"We were glad to welcome back those players and their rehab programme is going to plan," said Coetzee.
"It's really all about management and by next week they'll be ready for full contact, although I feel that Elstadt may be ready for game time this weekend.
"We also had Schalk Ferreira, the loosehead, back at training but he's nursing a hamstring strain.
The 27-year-old Ferreira retired from rugby two years ago after a serious neck injury, but he has made a remarkable recovery and late last year he was given the all clear to return to the game.
The Cheetahs had an outing against a composite side of players from the Eagles and Border Bulldogs over the weekend, an outing Coetzee feels will sharpen the Free Staters for their visit to Newlands.
"Now that the Cheetahs had a run and were tested you can expect them to play a quick game, with width," said Coetzee.
"They're very good on building try-scoring movements after securing turn-overs so that's what we'll be up against."
On Tuesday, Jonathan Kaplan, one of the world's foremost referees, will attend a Stormers' training session to try and ensure that players know what to expect at scrum time this season.
Coetzee said referees recently attended a SANZAR (the guardians of Super Rugby) conference where changes were announced for the setting of a scrum.
"SANZAR is looking to have a situation where the front row engages first rather than the whole pack, with the No 8 making a hit at the same time," said Coetzee.
"The aim is to prevent scrums collapsing. It won't compromise the value of the scrums, but it help safety considerations."
The Stormers will name their side for the Cheetahs clash on Wednesday.
Only Dewaldt still missing.

Rooster in the Stormers camp

Tue, 31 Jan 2012 13:25
JP du Plessis may be a new name in the Stormers midfield, but the young centre with rugby league skills in his arsenal has already made an early impression on his coaches.
Du Plessis was one of the stars of Western Province's 2009 Craven Week side, where he was spotted by a scout from Australian rugby league outfit, the Sydney Roosters.
The youngster spent a year with the Roosters before the Melbourne Rebels signed him for their inaugural Super Rugby season last year.
Moving to Sydney to tackle a completely different code, that he'd only ever seen on the internet, proved too difficult, which is why Du Plessis quickly switched back to union.
"JP has been in union his whole life and only spent one year in league, and it was tough for him to be thrown into the Sydney Roosters set-up as an 18-year-old," Stormers backline coach Robbie Fleck told this website.
"He didn't like the game and a lot of union guys can't make the transition to league simply because they just don't like the game, and it's not suited to their style of play.
"A lot of union guys struggle to go across and there aren't many that I know of who have gone and made a successful stint in league.
"Tiaan Strauss went across and was fairly successful, but there aren't many who make it. Likewise there are a huge amount of league guys who try to convert to union who don't make it," said Fleck.
The 20-year-old has made the decision to return to South Africa at the end of last year and Fleck believes he is ready to make his Super Rugby debut.
The skills that the former SA Under-18 starlet picked up while at the Roosters are of particular interest to Fleck, who believes union can learn a lot from their league cousins.
"The one thing JP has brought back is a massive attitude and a professional manner in the way he trains," Fleck explained.
"He's a big boy and what he has learnt in league are good hard running lines and a tough attitude in the wide channel, which is going to be great."
Following the departures of Jaque Fourie, Tim Whitehead and Johann Sadie, the Stormers will welcome a new star to challenge Jean de Villiers and Juan de Jongh for a place in the starting XV.
Du Plessis has already made an impact this season, with an eye-catching performance against Boland in the Stormers' opening pre-season match.
"He'll be a big thing for us either this season or the next one," Fleck stated.

I can only wonder why the Rebels coaching staff never thought so highly of him. He's undoubtedly an athlete.

Maybe they (and us) never saw whatever Fleck sees purely because of the lack of game time he got. Regardless, I wish him all the best back in SA.

Allister Coetzee (Gallo Images)
Cape Town - Stormers coach Allister Coetzee believes their four young guns, who signed on until the end of 2015 on Tuesday, are on their way to become Springboks one day.
Steven Kitshoff, Frans Malherbe, Siya Kolisi and Eben Etzebeth have all signed contracts with Western Province to ensure that they remain in Cape Town for the foreseeable future.
The Stormers made the contracts announcement on Tuesday afternoon at the NY 49 Stadium in Gugulethu, where hundreds of fans turned out to watch the Super Rugby SA Conference champions in action.
The Stormers pitted all four 20-year-olds against the Sharks at Newlands last week and their run of impressive performances have earned them contracts with Western Province.
Lock Etzebeth is rated as the leading rugby talent in the country and showed his worth again at Newlands when he bossed the Sprinngboks in the Sharks pack in the forward exchanges.
Prop Kitshoff went up against Bok Prop Jannie du Plessis and his performance drew generous applause from Coetzee.
Kolisi was a tower of strength in the loose as his physicality stopped many a Shark sortie dead in its tracks, and he showed that is capable of securing turn-overs as well.
Malherbe is a solid scrummager and has become the anchor for the Stormers' tight five as they set about imposing themselves upfront.
"It is no secret that there were unions who were prepared huge amounts for these players," said Coetzee. "They've all been given long-term contracts and its fantastic to see that our young players have been secured for the future.
"We made a decision based on the fact that we saw their future here in Cape Town after they came through the ranks at the WP Institute.
"The role players in our system as well as the Institute have all played a major part on their development.
"Although they are all 20-year-olds they are all on their way to becoming Springboks."
"Coming to Gugulethu is one of our many community projects, where people get the opportunity to see the players," said Coetzee. "The people here will enjoy a first-hand experience and get to meet the players.
"After this outing in Gugulethu we'll bring some of the youngsters to Newlands where they can see the players in action."
Gio Aplon, Juan de Jongh, Andries Bekker and Etzebeth all had niggles and were spectators at the training session. The Stormers have a bye this week and resume their Super Rugby programme in two weeks' time against the New Zealand outfit, the Blues.
"The bye couldn't come at a better time as after the first two weeks of the new season, many players have niggles and that's why you saw some of them had a break this afternoon. There were no injuries from our matches and we'll be ready for the Blues.

I like the looks of Siya Kolisi who was subbing for Schalk and Eben Etzebeth the 2nd rower. With Juandré Kruger at the Bulls, Etzbeth could be in the mix to partner Andries Bekker this year.

Flyhalf Johan Goosen of the Cheetahs is another inexperienced player that is making us take notice over here also.

Pretty sure Oom Lee as a scrum expert love our two fatties (Ginga & Frans) aswell. Ginga the youngest in the Stormers group. I had a look at the Stormers vs Sharks match again l;ast night and he destroyed Jannie Doep. Not bad for a laaitie whose parents had to give the OK to play SupeRugby last year. His and Frans signing is very important for us. We were looking for ages for fatties and finally have two decent ones.

Juan de Jongh (Gallo Images)
Cape Town - Springbok centre Juan de Jongh has signed a contract extension and will remain in the Cape until the end of 2015.

Die Burger reports that De Jongh, who was originally contracted until the end of 2012, will stay on at the Stormers and Western Province for a further three years.

Another Springbok, Gio Aplon, is also expected to remain at the Cape Town-based union.

The Stormers began the year on an uncertain note with director of rugby Rassie Erasmus announcing his resignation.

Nevertheless, they have since locked head coach Allister Coetzee into a three-year contract extension and recently confirmed that the promising quartet of Eben Etzebeth, Siya Kolisi, Frans Malherbe and Steven Kitshoff will remain at the union until the end of 2015.

Stormers will go on tour without Schalkie. Kolisi his replacement played so well and good they dont risk our captain. The Stormers still the only unbeaten team in the competition will head down south with lots of pressure and starting in NZ against the big guns. Any point on tour will be a bonus and probably the biggest challenge ahead for a bunch of youngsters who have complete the first stage of their 2012 journey with success. Stage two will be the tour.
Sport24
Cape Town - The Stormers have named a 26-man touring squad ahead of their four-week tour of Australasia.

Their injured captain, Schalk Burger, will not be travelling with the team.

Burger, who has been sidelined with a knee injury since the first game of the season, was expected to make his return on the tour but coach Allister Coetzee said the skipper will not be risked in any of the four games.

He will only be available to play once they return to South Africa. Jean de Villiers will continue to captain the team.

The Stormers take on the Higlanders in Dunedin on Saturday, followed by matches against the Crusaders, Reds and Force.

"It's a hell of a tough tour but we are looking forward to the challenge," said Coetzee.

Coetzee said that he was happy with their 20-17 win over the Bulls on Saturday but expects more from his squad in the future.

"We set ourselves goals for the first phase of the competition and we are very happy with five from five and top of the log at the moment.

"This first phase was about character building and laying a solid foundation and I think we have made strides there.

"That said though we have achieved nothing yet and we will continue to keep looking to build on each performance.

"We haven't hit our straps yet," said Coetzee.

Stormers Squad:

Stormers stars set to return

by Gavin Rich 30 April 2012, 08:48
Schalk Burger and Duane Vermeulen may be some way from returning to the playing field, but the Stormers’ Super Rugby challenge should be boosted by the return of several star players when they play their next match against the Cheetahs at Newlands on 12 May.
The best news for the Stormers as they head into a bye week and the guaranteed four log points that will hoist them into the 40s with seven matches still to play, all of them in South Africa and four of them at home, is that there is a good chance that Jean de Villiers will be back to lead them at Newlands.
The Springbok centre, who captained the team from the first match, when Burger was injured, through to the Crusaders game, had to return home early from tour because of a wrist injury that prevented him from playing against the Reds and Western Force.
While there is still uncertainty over whether he will be ready for the Cheetahs or not, Stormers coach Allister Coetzee has listed his chances of playing as high as “80 to 90%”.
A decision on De Villiers will be made on Wednesday, which is also when confirmation and an announcement is expected on when the Stormers can expect to see their most experienced loose-forwards, Burger and Vermeulen, back in training.
“Our medical team will liaise with the specialist when we get back home,” said Coetzee from Perth at the weekend.
Both Burger and Vermeulen sustained knee ligament injuries. When Vermeulen was ruled out of the final tour match against the Western Force, it was speculated that he might face a lengthy lay-off that may seem him only return to the playing field in time for the three-match sequence that will end the league phase of competition after the June tour window.
Burger was initially supposed to be coming back for the Cheetahs game but there have been complications in his rehab and it now appears he too may not be wearing the Stormers jersey before July.
As an Australian commentator put it at the weekend, the business end of the competition building up to the play-offs is when the experience of Burger (and Vermeulen) will be most valuable, so the timing of their return could be perfect provided the Stormers are able to go well enough without them in the meantime to stay at the top of the South African conference.
The June test matches are going to have a say in the Super Rugby race in terms of workload and possible injuries.
While no franchise coach would want his players to be injured and miss out on international opportunities, it could play into the Stormers’ hands were the likes of Burger to start their season only after the Springbok series against England.
If the tour proved one thing it was that the Stormers, thanks to Coetzee’s decision last year to use the Currie Cup as a preparation for Super Rugby, have enough depth to remain competitive even with top players out injured.
The coach will nonetheless be pleased that star wing Gio Aplon and physical lock Eben Etzebeth are expected to be fit for the Cheetahs game, while Andries Bekker and Steven Kitshoff, who both sustained knocks against the Force, are also said to be fine.

Stormers hunting Bok flank

2012-05-02 22:44
Cape Town - The Stormers are eager to regain the services of Springbok flank Francois Louw after an injury crisis at loose forward.

Die Burger reports the Capetonians are working hard to gain the services of an experienced loose forward and they have Louw in their sights.

The Stormers are short of loose forward experience with Schalk Burger, Duane Vermeulen and Nick Koster all out with knee injuries.

The trio that did duty in their last match against the Force - Siya Kolisa, Rynhardt Elstadt and Nizaam Carr - did exceptionally well but lack experience.

And Louw could just provide that much needed experience. He was one of their stars in 2010 and 2011, with his ball-poaching ability at the breakdowns earning him his Springbok colours.

He left Western Province in July last year to take up a contract with English club Bath, whom he captained this year.

Despite also recovering from a knee injury sustained on 24 March this year, he is expected to be ready for action shortly.

The 26-year-old has played 10 Test for the Springboks since he made his debut against Wales in Cardiff in 2010. His last Test was South Africa's agonising 11-9 World Cup quarter-final defeat to Australia in Wellington, New Zealand last year.
