Just wonder what Hammett has brought to the Hurricane's franchise. He clears out several outstanding strong-personality players (Hore, Nonu, Weepu - and then Cruden, Gear choose to not to play for him) all with a view to providing more structure to a traditionally hot n' cold, often flakey team and then this game happens in his second season on the job? There was a complete absence of structure, and tactics that played into the Chief's hands. The Hurricane set-piece is not the best after 1 1/2 season into Hammett's tenure and the team still relies on individual brilliance to secure wins.

Crusaders are clearly missing the oomph of Thorn and the nous/workrate of McCaw. Carter will take a few good weeks to return to anything close to his average form. Crusaders look like they have had too much rugby with RWC etc. taking it's toll on their key players. I don't see them rebounding to threathen a final place; they are not the strongest Crusader vintage.

Highlanders and Chiefs are great fun to watch. I love the Clan's commitment to the set-piece and breakdown but dont think they have the depth upfront to go really deep into the comp. They are a different team with Thompson and "Whoppa" on the park and their work ethic is only matched by the Brumbies.

Chiefs are winning despite losing most of their starting front five early in the season. Cruden is growing into being a complete player now and his ability to take a flat ball and pick out the right runner and choose the correct option is getting up there with Carter and Cooper. Kerr-Barlow looks like he has all the skills even if his option taking needs to mature somewhat. Not sure what their front row injury return looks like but if Masaga and a few props return, they might have the game to win it all.

The Blues have no appetite for the game and seem to lack directions. Riddled with talent, they have lost their way under Lam whose selection policies must have players scratching. Who the hell is that franchise's starting 10 after 3 years under Lam? Who is the preferred 9? Lam is not a head coach and has been given every opportunity but the Blues only get going going under new management.

Wow, exciting end to the Bulls/Crusaders game. 32-30 to the Bulls.

Mixed emotions. On one hand I thought the Bulls would win comfortably given the Saders recent form so I am actually quite happy that it did not turn out to be a flogging. At the same time I am blowing up deluxe just as Keiran Read was in his 26th game as capt tonight.

I had a whole list of complaints about the referee but at the risk of being accused of just hating on the referee because my team lost I will narrow it down to x2 main bad calls - one per team.

Starting with the Bulls being screwed over at one particular scrum where it was actually Wyatt Crockett bringing it down himself. Wyatt needs to focus on his scrumming more - the rest of his game was fine.

The most infuriating however & what ultimately decided the game was the penalty against Dan Carter for obstruction, had this penalty not been given to the Bulls the Saders were in for a certain try. What exactly happened? Well on replay it was the exact same thing that happened when the Force played the Reds in round 2 & I thought Pocock was obstructed by Diggers from making a try saving tackle. After the explanation I got on here at G&GR I can only conclude that Dan Carter was pinned for the same thing that Diggers wasnt. If it weren't for that we were over.

Were the Bulls tired? Underestimated the Saders? (surely not). All I know (or care about) is that the Saders whilst still getting themselves together looked way better in this game than previous weeks & they did it whilst looking very tired, hands on knees stuff, sucking in the big ones. I'm quietly optimistic.

Marshall & Heinz were excellent when they came on & Taylor looked a bit better in his brief stint. Dan's kicking was a bit off but given he's still getting back into it I can forgive him, his game in all other areas was way better than the previous week. Good signs for the back line. Loved the running angle in Reads try. Forwards muscled up well to a Bulls team that had a real go against the Stormers who I consider the form team at the mo.

They'll be disappointed for the loss, & still a work in progress but pretty happy with the Saders in this game.

It's hard to get out of the republic without getting some sort of loopy assistant referee or TMO call. Adds a little spice to the visit.
I know what you mean as it certainly happens in AUS and especially NZ...........
The rule may or may not apply to players behind the ball but Carter certainly was aware what was going on around him.

I thought the crusaders forwards were incredible!

All & all I'm stoked with the performance none-the-less, it was an improvement on last week.

Forwards were fantastic but the backs impressed me also given they cut down on a lot of their errors. Across the park they were all pretty solid. I do like Crotty starting over Taylor though (even with the dodgy mustache). Zac Guildford had brilliant hands in one of the tries.

Last thing I'll say on the Dan situation is that I thought he was well inclined to keep his line. It wasnt the only call like that either Wyatt Crockett was penalised for obstruction when Basson just ran straight into him. Bulls did cop a few bad ones but the Sader penalties were really soft, even the Saffa commentators were bemused by a few of the decisions that went against the Saders.

Stormers will be way tougher however & both teams will have had to travel so I'm expecting similar travel effect on both sides. Maybe more so the Crusaders given they are coming back from a tour. I really like the way the Stormers are playing, Crusaders can have a real go of it if they go again & lift a little more than this recent effort against the Bulls. The Reds & Force are the next couple of games for the Stormers after the Saders & for the sake of respectability in regards to the Oz conference I hope both teams pull big efforts out because the way the Stormers are playing & the way the Oz teams are playing - things could get ugly.

On another note how about those Canes? I reckon they are turning into a real dark horse chance.

Not convinced by all this Chief's love. They still seem to make the type of headless decision that can be exposed under pressure, and better teams will place them under pressure. Come the money stages of the tournament, I feel that their set-piece will be problematic.

The Crusaders are building once more after another slow start. The Hurricanes just dont dont have it and the Highlanders lack the depth that would make me believe they will finish strongly.

I am a Chiefs fan and can see a huge differense compare to the past. It seems Rennie made a world of differense to them and they look just as good off the field as a team. Thats the differense between them and the Blues.

The Cheifs are the real deal. Whit pisses me off about this conference system is we won't get to see them play the Stormers. It would have been a cracker.

Yep its m,y favourate SA team vs my favourate NZ team. Stormers also lose out playing the Brumbies this year. The Brumbies the Stormers bogey team till last year but we sure have the wood over the Chiefs. Would have been interesting matches and just maybe with luck we will see them play each other in the business end.

Don't know Riptide. Wayne Smith's influence is fairly evident IMO. They are more disciplined and play with a bit more headiness. Cruden is a big factor as is the play of Messam and Latimer. Not to mention a matured SBW, teamed up with an inform Kahui. They're not perfect but I think with an improved tight 5 and the above, they have the right ingredients and will test any side even in knock out footy.

Yes they push the envelope but so do all the other teams in the top 6. Yes they make the odd poor decision but that is no different to the supposed top teams.

Ginger vs the Baby Eater would of made a great scrum battle.

It would certainly be a good move for Nonu, recently he's looked as if he's been taking advice from Weepu's dietician. Would be sad to see such a good player fade out of the game.
