The undercurrent has been that it wasn't fitness Quade was underdone in. If this is the cases, deans has been fantastic in protecting him from the media.

Do you have permanent employmenyt WJ? Your ability to spin a negative into a positive could be very valuable coming into this election year.

How am I spinning anything anymore than anyone else. I beleave in balance, which is why my alternate view is often seen as "positive" there is no more spin to it than those posting negatives from speculation which fills these pages.

The above jibe was nothing really more than that. I will admit that your alternate views are good for pointing out an alternate view. But trying to balance a whole forum by yourself leads to an impression of being positive for positive's sake.

Lets face it, sometimes its up to me or the forum is lost. ;)

Does anyone else think we shouldn't bother with Phipps? When's the last time Genia got injured?

My vies is we should pick a half back that covers other positions instead of Phipps who is too slow to do that. Kingi or Frisby would work as emergency only subs (which is the only way Phipps is going to get on the field)

I have this strange feeling about this weekend.

A perfect storm is building for Eden Park.

RD has been forced to name a team which is almost competitive. Sure, it isn't quite our best team, even considering injuries, but it is incrementally closer, and there is nothing like a complete shellacking to motivate a team when the coach seems completely unable to.

  • Moore just keeps popping up in tight and gets through a mountain of work
  • Genia thrives on responsibility and the (c) makes him more effective, not less.
  • Hooper is an 80 min warrior and carries the ball so well.
  • Cooper is focussed, and has had minimal Deans exposure.
  • The backs will see the ball out in front of them, not behind them, and not 30 yards behind the advantage line
  • The pack (I'm looking at you, Higgers et al) will have had a boot in the arse and know it's now or never.
  • They can build that siege focus into their preparation

I'm putting the house on red on Coopers roulette wheel. Which I think he meant means gold.

NB No actual betting will take place.

A cornered wallaby will come out swinging. Imagine what a Troup/mob of them will do.

This Saturday night will be special whatever the result.

Deans stated he was underdone so my point is clearly that was not the case. He wasn't selected in the match in Sydney for reasons that had nothing to do with fitness. He should have at least been on the bench in Sydney and this turn around by Deans makes things look out of control in Camp Wallaby. Cooper would have benefited massively from being on the pitch at some point in Sydney. Now he gets thrust into the main play making role in Eden park where the Kiwis will be howling for his blood. I can only hope this turn of events doesn't damage Cooper any more. Deans has done nothing to protect Cooper from anyone. In fact, he's almost set him up to fail. Go Quade.

I would prefer we select a player that can cover 9 plus other backs positions as well. ie Benny Lucas. He's not brilliant but I'd be just as comfortably with him replacing Genia as Phipps and it gives us further cover at 10 & 15 if we were in massive poo. But to be honest, I'm not sure why we even bother with a 7 man bench sometimes.

RD said on the Rugby Club last night, when questioned about his use of the bench that players like Genia and Pocock, barring injury, are 80 minute players. So Phipps and Hooper were only ever picked to come on in case of injury. But then even when Poey gets injured and was clearly less effective from that point on, he stays out there. I know he's the captain and all but it's just frustrating - as has been covered on here a lot.

Here are the thoughts of Wayne Smith on the RC so far

There is a good chance that the All Blacks could put Australia away with something to spare this weekend. There are a lot of holes in this current Australian defence. If New Zealand can keep the scrum up and be more accurate with their lineout delivery, then there are a lot of attacking opportunities.
It was hard to be certain what was going on with Australia last Saturday. The selection of the team indicated that they would play a solid, chasing game, kicking for territory and trying to squeeze mistakes from the All Blacks. You do not pick Berrick Barnes, Anthony Fainga’a and Rob Horne and then try to play like Quade Cooper and James O’Connor.
But that is exactly what Australia did, throwing a series of wild passes in their own red zone. Did they imagine they could open up New Zealand with a surprise tactic or were they suckered into it by New Zealand’s defensive pattern.
I was certainly impressed with how New Zealand set up in defence. Their movement in the backfield was superb and offered very littleroom for Genia & Barnes to kick into. They pressed the Aussie midfield and left the space out wide. Australia went for it and came badly undone.
Technically there were deficiencies on both sides. Other than Pocock, the Australian forwards’ body position were poor and they were not getting the shoulder under the opposition chests. Now they don’t even have Pocock. Hooper will add some running game to the attack, but Australia’s back row balance was poor at the weekend.
They may need to find alternative kicking options from the centres and the wings this weekend, because there is not much on for Barnes. Australia will also have to be more imaginative with their use of forward runners. Having the world’s best half back firing long flat passes to forwards in midfield, who are then getting smashed, is not a good use of resources.
If the All Blacks have a good week analytically they will see a lot of opportunities off the set piece. If they can tidy up some of their timing issues, particularly on the offload, then it could be ominous for Australia.
Strangely I saw rather more to be optimistic about in Argentina’s game. It would not shock me at all if they were able to beat South Africa in Mendoza this weekend. The Springboks were very accurate in the first match between the sides and the skills in their mini units were good.
Marcell Coetzee also goes from strength to strength. South Africa’s depth on the flank is extraordinary when you consider Schalk Burger and Juan Smith are both still recovering from injury and Heinrich Brussow was dropped to bring in Coetzee.
But there were a lot of good signs from Argentina. Juan Martin Hernandez is a heck of a player. Sometimes he is too far ahead of the rest of his team. There was the odd inside ball and wide flat pass that his team mates weren’t expecting.
When they get onto his wave length then Argentina will be a big threat, particularly at home. They were not outclassed at the weekend and could certainly beat South Africa.

I see nine as a specialist position, as I do THP & Hooker. I prefer to see the next best available sitting on the bench.

Strangely enough, I am starting to feel a cautious optimism that the Wallabies will play much better in this game.

Maybe there is light at the end of the tunnel. I just hope it isn't a train.

The Wallabies will play better. So, unfortunately, will the ABs.

I am worried about Quade channeling that pressure and playing a blinder.

When the next best is a long way second and not much different to the players I stated, I don't agree. If white was available it would be different.
