Super rugby has become more and more about "last minute" (offseason) recruiting where is ITM is still centred around home grown talent and pulling from club level.

The Chiefs recruited superbly for this years campaign. It was their recruiting that made a big mark on their depth. SBW, Mr T, Cruden, Robbie Robinson, Craig Clarke, these were massive additions on top of what was a good-ish squad but were exposed if they had 1 or 2 injuries.

Some changes mooted for 2013 ITM Cup

Next year's ITM Cup will be played over an extended competition window of nine weeks with a reduction in mid-week fixtures.

The competition will begin on the weekend of August 17 and will run for nine weeks followed by semifinals and finals.

Matches will no longer be scheduled for Tuesday evenings, and teams will now have only one short turnaround in a season, rather than two.

The competition will still conclude at the end of October and will retain a playoff structure.

The finalised draw for 2013 is expected to be released in February.
