Brothers are definitely on a roll after that ordinary start. Not only have they rediscovered their winning ways, they are piling on points as well.

So at the halfway mark it's Uni, Sunnybank, Easts and Brothers, with Sun Coast and Norths just outside the six. I'm thinking that GPS will struggle and Wests have no hope, but the rest are in with a chance. Souths will need to pull the finger out though.

I went to the Norths v Easts game at Shaw Park. The first half was pretty ordinary, with Norths going to the break 5-0 up, and unlucky not be ahead by more. Easts were really struggling with poor passes, dropped ball and nothing going right. The second half was totally different. It was like Easts had woken up. Suddenly passes stuck and there was continuity, which resulted in four tries and a bonus point. Young Joel Faulkner played at 13 and scored a brace, and Tim Walsh sparked the revival with some good kicking and clever running.

That draw at Uni has certainly stuffed the tipping.

Did he play well or was it just a case of him being in the right place at the right time? I watched him in the Qld U16's a few years ago and thought he could be anything but have been told by a few guys that he doesn't seem to be committed enough. When he played my Colts team earlier in the season he was very quiet too. I know he is still young but I would love to see him reach his potential.

Well put it this way, he put himself in position to score those tries. I thought his positional sense was good and he defended the channel well.

He definitely has potential, and as with a few young guys of island extraction, I think his humility and seemingly 'laid back nature' is occasionly misinterpreted as a lack of commitment.

Well, back to club land after the long weekend break. It will be interesting to see how many S14 players are on the field today. Thinking of going to the Sunnybank/Easts game althought the Brothers v Suncoast game at Crosby Park might also be worth attending.

At Oldmac, Easts will be without the retired Tim Walsh, so might be pushing it against a Bank team that should have a few Reds on the park. I will still back the Tigers for the upset of the round. Cant see Wests getting anywhere near Norths, Souths to hammer GPS, Brothers too strong at home, and in the other upset, Goldie to knock over Uni.

About to head down to Brothers to watch the Sunny Coast play. Should be a good match. And Morgan Turunui should be heading out today as well as he heads to France.

Just 5 minutes away Norths will hopefully be sending out Blair Connor on the right note as he leaves to France.

Turinui and Connor play their last Oz games today? Que? Their French club commitments would start in, what, mid-August? Surely they'd be better off playing until 1 August. I mean they're only backs, there's no pre-season strength work to be done.

Breakers had a heart breaking defeat at the hands of Uni this evening at Albert Park.
The score changed a number of times and both sides were happy to play a very expansive game.
Second half saw thre (3) Breakers in the bin for various offences and immediately Uni took a 22-12 lead however the heart of the Breakers fought back and they put on 10 pints with only 12 players on the field.
A penalty goal to the Breakers saw them take a 25-22 lead right up until time which saw a succession of penalties to Uni eventually yield a try. Credit to Uni for not going for the easy draw and perservering for the win.
Final score Uni 29 Breakers 25.
A great game.

Tipped the wrong upsets didn't I....

Brothers had a killer second half yesterday to take the points with Donelly outstanding in his 100th club game. Apparently he also scored his 80th try. It was a game of two halves with Sun Coast dominating the first and going into the break 17 - 0 up. They didn't give up but Brothers were simply too strong and fast in the second half.

Gee, Easts copped a hiding. Love to see a match report of that.

Headed out to Crosby, caught the Premier Colts first half. Good comeback from the Stingrays, unfortunately they lost in a fairly tight encounter.

The Brothers vs Sunshine Coast was a great game of rugby. 37-20. Great crowd out at Crosby as well, with some good reffing throughout the day.

The scoreline should have been a lot closer. With the Stingrays failing to capitalise on about 80% of territory in the first half. Brothers were reduced a man for a Professional foul, but from there Brothers really gave it to the Stingers. Resident Sunshine Coast hitman Toese Lealumana(?) had a great game. Caleb Ralph former All Black looked a bit out of it.

No one really to single out for Brothers because in the 2nd half, they all played so well.

My Man of the match is the Sunshine Coast's number 7 Matt Bain. Fantastic first half. Half his forward pack went lost in the 2nd half, but he certainly didn't. Also setting up a few try and scoring one himself.

Wests invite applications from Colts coaches

The doggies are not wasting any time are they?!?!? I was looking through the QRU website and came across this! I cannot believe it, I know they have had problems down there going back to last year, and there apparently has been quite a bit of turnover of coaching staff, both at the end of last season, but also within the first few weeks of this season. I wouldn't like to be a coach anywhere, let alone at the Kennel right now and see this so early on, bloody hell, we have only just turned the halfway mark!!

West Brisbane Rugby Union club are seeking applications for their 2011 Colts (Under 19) coaching team. Previous experience as a coach would be desirable and a level 1 or 2 coaching certificate would be advantageous.
Any enquiries to David Mollah 0488191670.
Applications close 5pm Friday 9 July and should be addressed to the Chief Operating Officer, PO Box 103
Toowong 4066.

Interesting. One problem most clubs have with the colts programs is giving it to club old-boys, almost as a learning position. What they don't realise is players come from much more professional set ups in schools and when they start colts have a level of expectation.

Wests actually have some ok colts coaches already in their ranks, would be interesting to see if they apply.

Coaches are one thing but players are another. One of Souths biggest colt recruits (if not biggest) is already looking to change clubs THIS YEAR. Obviously won't happen, but it shows how much of a joke their sacking of premiership winning coaches for a couple of inexperienced, unqualified coaches really was.

NB I don't coach at either club (nor have I) involved at schoolboys and grade level and know alot of the current colts around the traps.

The reason for the early advertisement is that the incumbent head coach has advised that he will not be taking up the post again next year.

I guess it makes sense. If you want to turn around a Colts program recruitment is the key. If they get someone in soon they will be able to have a say in the recruitment process and have a bit more of a say in who the chase after. I would think that they would really want a Level 2 coach as it shows a bit of commitment to improving yourself as a coach. When we played them they were very disappointing, they were missing two of their better players. I was surprised at their low level of fitness. Lots of guys walking very early on when they were still in the game.

It still amazes me how many clubs miss that.
You guys at uni get it right, some of the others appoint coaches in November. I remember the coach of a colts group a few years back talking about school visits. The coach was adamant that they were a complete waste of time. Meanwhile, that club had about 23 colts for three teams.

Even if it is just to get in front of people, clubs need to be proactive and realize kids manly choose to play where their friends go (in particular the non-superstars)

I worked at Sunnybank a few years ago and did a lot of recruitment. I would go to everything from GPS, AIC, TAS games to local comps, CSS training sessions, QLD jersey presentations, local league games anywhere I thought we could pick up players. Some were a complete waste of time others were fantastic. The major thing I got out of it was that the kids get to know who you are and when you start to talk to them about where they want to play they have a relationship with you and listen to what you say. I had a Queensland Schoolboy player call me up and ask me if he could come and play at Sunnybank because his mates at school were talking about it. The other thing is that even if the kids weren't going to be stars but loved the game I would tell them to come down and play colts the following year. As a result the club went from struggling to field two colts teams to having 3 colts teams in the finals and winning Premier Colts for the first time. I'm not saying that every club should do this but if you build up a team of enthusiastic people as a recruitment team you will go a long way to identifying and securing players for the following year.
The other this is retention. Players need to feel wanted. Just because they play at a club one year doesn't give them a reason to stay the following year. A phone call or a Christmas card go a long way to tell a player that he is wanted and is an important part of the club.

Lion I take your point. Injuries can rip a team apart. I also think that a couple of the major players who were out were the team leaders and that has a big effect on guys at this level.

Garrick Morgan on the G Coast does a great job. he actively seeks the TSS and other school players giving them a warm fuzzy about the program andit is paying dividends handsomley.
EG, they already have a nuber of school based player s fronting their bench in preparation for the finals programs - Cox's & Talialui from TSs and some from other schools.
Thats good recruitment and we say last year that Souths had Situati in their lineup for the finals.
