Super Rugby Pacific 2025 pre-season trial match thread

Fifty plus point win for Reds expected. Shame Bristol have a tough fixtures schedule this weekend. That said - this is the benefit of English Club Rugby having 10 (this season) teams - plenty of scope to give up and coming players a chance to shine, rather than our boys holding tackle bags in...

Looks like England U20s ground out a tough win over Ireland U20s - the 20 min Red Card in use; lucky for England. The NH U20 Teams really benefit from the U20s 6N, and appear (to me) to take U20s far more seriously than we do as a genuine pathway.

    Waratahs 2025

Agreed - close to full strength for the Waratahs; should take an easy win. Interested to see how Reimer goes against Gamble @7 - who looks to have trimmed down in the off season.

Playing three #7s will be very interesting to watch - Earl really is #8, but I appreciate he plays #7 for his Club mostly.

Oh yes - U20s shld win - they play Bath A next....should be a stiffer test for them.

    England U20s beat Cambridge comfortably.

    Waratahs 2025

Wouldn't surprise me if he becomes the starting #7; a proper livewire. Move Gamble to #6 or the bench.

    Waratahs 2025

"the 7 from Easts looked great all year who has been training all off season with the Tahs. Former England 7s player I believe?" I would rate him over Gamble (who is a 6.5) as an out and out #7, but probably plays against him being from overseas? Not many non-Australian players (or non OZ...

England U20s (and Europe Tier 1 U20s in general) have their ducks lined up - no wonder they are so competitive. Playing Cambridge Uni this weekend, then Bath United (aka Bath A) then 6N U20s Comp. We should really take a leaf out of that book and play more U20s games against Super Rugby A sides -...

    Rugby News from unexpected places

Looks like HK are building towards that - they have a tour to ACT to play the Brumbie Runners lined up for April - they'll be collecting a few HK Born who play in Australia on the way.

    Rugby News from unexpected places

Correct - I'll ask around when I go to Hong Kong this month - my guess it is very dependent on winning the ARC in 2025 to qualify for RWC 2027. I heard that with potentially no U20 Trophy in 2025, that Hong Kong China Rugby (HKCR) are taking a squad to Europe to play Netherlands and maybe other...

    Rugby News from unexpected places

Nope - I read (I'll try and find link if interested) that HK will try and join in 2025 (December) / 2026, post 2025 ARC (if they win it), as the Japan League are already preparing to admit non Japanese sides (League 3 only). Hong Kong need way more competitive games (if they win ARC) - going...

Harlequins vs Leicester [The Big Game] sold out at Twickenham this weekend - 82,000. Tickets roughly 36 pounds each. Harlequins report this one game alone worth around 10% of annual turnover. The break even vs playing at home at the Stoop is reported to being able to sell 40,000 tickets for...

    Rugby News from unexpected places

I read also that Hong Kong are on a similar to recruitment drive - apparently there are several U23s [Hong Kong born] playing in Australia and New Zealand. The winner of the Asian Rugby Championship (in June 2025) gains direct entry to RWC 2027. If they qualify for the RWC, Hong Kong are due...

    Rugby News from unexpected places

They don't have long - the qualifying tournament is in 6 month's time! They'll likely be very much fringe players, given it would void them from being able to play for Japan.
