The Role of Private Schools in Australian Rugby

As a former DO, I know that they do target all schools. It's not as simple as ringing the school and booking them in for some clinics and then the kids show up at their local club to play rugby. Many schools only have a small number of male teachers which makes life really hard for sport in...

The Role of Private Schools in Australian Rugby

Aspiring regional sports stars will play for their local club/s on a Saturday/Sunday as well as the league/union/AFL midweek school based competitions as well as the respective statewide knockout competitions for the winter sports. If a kid is handy enough at 17 years old he could well be...

    Rugby Coaching

That's crazy, the schools must be looking for a law suit. Smart Rugby is the absolute minimum qualification to be covered for insurance purposes and is essential for all referee's, players coaches etc. It's not only the schools where the upskilling needs to occur, there are heaps of...

    Rugby Coaching

Unsupervised, unstructured touch football is possibly the worst thing you can let your players ‘run in their own time’. From experience as a player, coach and development officer it is one of the biggest mistakes coaches make. Generally, players use it as a social exercise rather than for...

    Farewell to Burgo

Burgo is a champ. I had the pleasure of meeting him here in Wagga when he was just starting out at the Brumbies. He is an easy going, approachable and very likeable bloke. On the field he has always been great to watch. I hope he enjoys his time in France and does well in whatever he turns his...

Union or League? The pros and cons for school leavers

Plenty of players from our SIRU comp have played rugby through England, Ireland, Canada and the USA all from networking with other blokes they know and being willing to front up and have a crack at another club. I played footy in Canberra with two Kiwi's who were doing the same thing, there are...

Union or League? The pros and cons for school leavers

Coming from regional NSW, where I have grown up and played most of my footy, there are a number of options available to junior players in this area and also some interesting decisions to be made for them as the decide on their future in which ever sport they choose. A talented Under 14 player...

Union or League? The pros and cons for school leavers

Matt Groat is a product of the Riverina, I think he went to Griffith High School before being nabbed by St Greg's. His brother is still running around for the Griffith Blacks. Trivia - he and Andrew Fifita have both run around for the Griffith Blacks before playing for the Tige's.

    Rugby spirit

Really? Every game I've played, this is a central part of the match. Rep games, grand finals, schoolboy, grade and in two different competitions teams have always shaken hands before the match then tunnel each other off afterwards.

RWC 2011 - Bitch, moan and discuss - Referees and Law Discussions

The ref may award a penalty try and yellow card if the act of foul play prevents the try being scored. I'm not sure what the law is with regards to a try that is scored, but in the process of scoring an act of foul play is committed. I would suggest it is at the referee's discretion as to the...

RWC 2011 - Bitch, moan and discuss - Referees and Law Discussions

Great summary elementfreak, good work mate. There is a LOT of stuff for ref's to keep an eye on (not only at scrum time) isn't there!!

RWC 2011 - Bitch, moan and discuss - Referees and Law Discussions

I agree. You would think though that in a World Cup game, the ref would be aware of what was going on, and he clearly wasn't.

RWC 2011 - Bitch, moan and discuss - Referees and Law Discussions

It's a strange one isn't it. Lee Grant talked about it in the NZ v France thread. I think the clock was still running, but I didn't notice him make a mark. Either way, it comes down to poor management from Rolland, if time was on, he shouldn't have been talking to the AB's they way he was, and...

RWC 2011 - Bitch, moan and discuss - Referees and Law Discussions

What was the interpretation of the French try in the 75th minute of the AB's game? Rolland and his AR's must be on drugs, surely there is no way that that could have been awarded as a try.

    Rugby spirit

It's hard to go past Umaga for his on-field effort, but there is also the camaraderie of beers after the game, the pride of playing with your team mates and having had a great time on and off the field. There are plenty of examples of rugby spirit, everyone's will be a bit different.
