    CAS Rugby 2013

The weight I mentioned - 85kgs - was his 2009 weight when he was U/17 qualified; so he'd have to be more than that now.

Sorry it wasn't a quiz - I was just curious. So he didn't make it in league?

    CAS Rugby 2013

Usaia played from the bench for Oz Schools in 2009 v. Tonga Schools at Riverview, when no.8 Matt Ika was injured and Waita Setu moved up to the starting team. In case folks think I have a great memory, I don't: I wrote the remarks in my programme. It's interesting to note who else was on the...

    CAS Rugby 2013

It's good to see that Usaia O is back in the union code. He was a talented no.8 and got picked for Oz A Schools in 2009 but he got called up to the main side to play against Tonga Schools. He was one of those forwards who "had all the skills" though he was agressive enough for his weight...

    QLD GPS Rugby 2013

Okey doke - I should have contacted armatt first anyway, but didn't think. My bad.

Mind if I turn that post into a blog with your name on it Dark Shark? Anybody got a couple of GPS photos to go with it?

Horwitz was also one of the "Invited Players" by the Tahs at the end of 2012 and the beginning of 2013 (as was the older Will Skelton). He also played twice for the Sydney Academy team at TG Milner and is now playing Ones for Randwick as you say. The "pathway", to use a boring word, has...

    NSW AAGPS Rugby 2013

I was disappointed when I realised the big guns weren't playing and I checked with the programme and sure enough, they weren't named. But after oranges I saw the unmistakable figure of Tepai, and re-checked the programme. I hadn't thought to look in the reserves. The big names made a...

The halves need a bit of special skills too and the dummy-half has to know how to distribute wisely. But by and large you are right. A big lanky lad can play rugby union to the highest level as can the chunky slower fellow. You don't see a lot of these players in pro rugby league because...

Australian Schoolboys & National Championships 2013

Yeah they do surprise you. I thought the 2008 side wasn't up to much, yet they won in NZ; but I thought the 2009 pack had some of the best forwards i had seen for a while, even without the injured Hooper, and they would underwrite a victory - but they lost. I was convinced the 2011 team...

I think they will keep the two league guys together though we all know that Milne has played wing for Newington and NSW Schools. Disagree on the rating: of the two I would like to keep Milne in the union code, but that is neither here nor there. I would have agreed last year as Milne had some...

Australian Schoolboys & National Championships 2013

To be fair to the Newington centres, Milne and Moeroa, they were brought up in the league game where one on one contests have more currency than in union. They don't have the two extra two backrowers in league and the gaps between defenders are wider; it is harder to plug a hole when breached...

    Galloping Greens

I see that David Horwitz is playing flyhalf for the GGs after earlier playing inside centre. To Randwick tragics who watch the team most weekends — how is he going?

Are we talking about Charlie Taylor? I saw all the Div I games and I thought he was unlucky. Jones was always going to be one of the wingers and I can't argue against Henley who looked really promising. I would have had Charlie in the Oz Two side ahead of Davis, not that he was shabby.

That's interesting and reading above just now I note, in hindsight, that someone said that the GPS lads up there were at a disadvantage. It didn't affect the GPS in Sydney that much compared to CAS, the next strongest association historically, yet CAS had 6-7 rounds under their belt at trial...

I don't know Mr Cronan but was looking up some old ASRU Newsletters this morning and found out that he has been involved for yonks as manager of Oz Schools and no doubt as a selector in that time. That makes him qualified in my eyes — and I hope that nobody calls into question the selection...

Australian Schoolboys & National Championships 2013

A lot of boys from Qld and NSW play both games - or have. If they want to play professionally, like both games equally and perform in them with equal proficiency, they would realise that they have a better chance to play pro league because there are three times as many pro teams in that code...

    QLD GPS Rugby 2013

I think this is part of the picture. NSW schools teams in the past had played only a couple of games before they went into the Oz Champs whereas the Qld lads were about halfway through their season - or maybe more than that. (I'm talking about GPS where most of the NSW Is players came from)...

I don't know about those games but as I mentioned on the Tahs v Reds thread: Newington is playing Trinity in the curtain-raiser at 5.40pm. .

I guess we are both entitled to have different opinions from each other, and other people. I thought that Deegan tackled and ran with the ball better than Third, but that Third was very good and the best Qld I player after Wilkin. Not that Deegan had a kick at goal, but Third is the better...
