I disagree that it is a poor version of rugby. It has been around for a long time, at its best it is great entertainment. The thing is that it relies to a large extent on crowd involvement, and that is something that we have never been able to build here in Oz.

Apropos of nothing much, there is an amazing article in today's Hurled, in which Tom Carter finally admits that he could have been a better sportsman. Worth a read.

The Reds really needed to have some options when the outside backs were being starved of room and time.

He had no room at all to work in, partly good defence but also some inept work by those inside him. The Reds needed to do a bit more work inside him I reckon.

Super impressed with the Reds performance, particularly given that they lost their starting hooker so early on. Get the backline alignment right, a bit more patience building an attack, and they win. Harry Wilson looks the goods, for sure.

Interesting factoid about Loane. A pal of mine who played with him in the Wobbs told me that the biggest problem with Loane was that nobody knew which way he was going to run when he had the ball. Totally unpredictable.

I might add that he was not a selector.

So, to sum up your opinion, my suggestion is crap, but you cannot come up with a better one? Some of these "semi-professional" clubs have long and distinguished histories, and I know from personal experience that people who live a long way from the big cities appreciate seeing them visit...

It's more realistic, in my opinion, to take some club rugby games to the bush. That is happening in NSw. (For all I know, it is also happening in QLD; if so, apologies). Maybe an occasional game at a really top stadium, like Townsville.

I don't agree with everything you have said, but the general tenor is pretty right, I reckon. Just about everybody here understands that the Soup has outlived its stay, but there is very little appetite to accept that we need to bow to the reality that we are a niche sport in this country...
