I cannot speak for Hoiles reasoning but an argument could be made that in order to build greater audience interest we need teams that are genuine contenders far more regularly than they currently are. Greater levels of competitiveness and success would in theory lead to higher overall ratings...

    Australian Rugby / RA

From my understanding traditionally speaking there's been very little actual value in Super Rugby when it comes to the TV negotiations and the vast bulk of the revenues are generated by the Test component of the deals. Additionally, the ratings suggest that the derby games are the highest raters in Aus...

They'll actually go the other way. As there are direct flights from Auckland to BA and now BA to Jo'burg. As for the likes of Harbour/Tasman etc. The issue with that is they'd need to blessing of the NZRU. Cannot see them being too keen on that if we pulled the plug. I do think we could...

2019 TV ratings and crowd numbers

Those Rebels figures from memory were pretty much in around what they've always managed. They're not great but they're not as terrible as they look. Considering the time slot the Tahs game was ok as well. Could have been better but still ok-ish.

Because in order to do that we need NZ to want to play ball. They so far are not keen. I'd support such a league involving a Fiji and combined Samoa/Tonga franchise preferably played under GRR laws as I think it would produce a very watchable product but it just won't happen.

2019 TV ratings and crowd numbers

At the end of the A-League regular season games were rating half those figured at the highest. With quite a few sub 20k. One of those games was played in the 5:30pm slot on a Friday. It's actually pretty good for that slot. The Rebels ratings were poor.

Kagifa Samoa v Western Force - Ballymore, Brisbane - 1:40 PM (EST), Saturday, 15 June 2019

I agree with you on two of your three points. While Turinui was fine I cannot stand Bray's chattering style. And his apparent inability to learn which name goes with which face.

This is going to be an unpopular opinion for fans of two of the Aus teams in the Rebels and the Force. But we pushed for the wrong kind of expansion at the end of Super 12. Instead of more teams we should have gone for Super 12 going from the single round robin format of 11 games to the double...

Kagifa Samoa v Western Force - Ballymore, Brisbane - 1:40 PM (EST), Saturday, 15 June 2019

They both play for Brothers in Brisbane so there's a high likelihood of that they're related in some way or another. Which would also mean he's related to Will. Just looked up his highlights on YouTube. Looks like a hard running, hard tackling centre who can play a bit of loose forward when needed.

If he works his way onto the RA board that would be the end of it for me. I'll start following the Giants or Macarthur FC.

    Rugby News from unexpected places

The first goal of the league is to fill their current stadiums as they operate on a revenue share agreement on ticket sales. Once they close in on that then they'll likely start looking at larger facilities. With any luck that will in the next 2-3 seasons. They're hoping for 1m viewers for the...

    Rugby News from unexpected places

MLR is probably not quite a that point at present. The crowd average for this season is slightly down from last but that's largely thanks to just awful weather in the first 2 months of the season with rain, near blizzard conditions and storms forcing games to be played in conditions in largely...

    Ballymore Redevelopment

With the apparent surge in interest from retirees looking to take advantage of the franking credit scheme and the real chance of a recession on the horizon I wouldn't be holding your breath.

    Rugby News from unexpected places

There's no word of where the two 2021 teams will be located. I know there was an article relating to a potential Vegas bid from a group that apparently has already purchased a plot on the strip in order to development a Rugby specific stadium. There has been recent movement in Ohio from a group...

Additionally, one of the directors of the Houston Sabrecats mentioned in a post that 'two well financed' new bids were set to come online in 2021. Bringing the number of teams to 14.

    Rugby News from unexpected places

A couple of compelling semi-finals in the MLR over the weekend. With San Diego winning it with a nicely worked try and a perfect example of how to kick from the sideline by Joe Pietersen at the death against a valiant New York in what was an absolute pearl of a game. And Seattle having too many...

I guess that would be possible. Haven't seen any mention of anything coming out of Hawaii regarding MLR and he's quoted as saying they'll be operating tow franchises in GRR.

The NY games will likely only ever be exhibition and would likely require a level of cross promotion with the MLR franchise based in the city because I cannot see under their sanctioning agreement any room for a competitor operating in their market.

I don't know how reliant they'll be on sourcing players from the companies. And if they are drawing the crowds it will be attractive to the better Japanese talent.
