Highlanders v Queensland Reds, Forsyth Barr Stadium, Friday 26 May

Just watched it again paying attention to what Pickerill says - when Vest is still receiving treatment on the ground, Pickerill asks "is he going to stay on?" - shortly after, Pickerill says "we have a HIA so he's gotta go off." A bit of discussion between the trainers and Pickerill follows, and...

Hang on, aren't we doing mandatory (10 day?) stand downs for a failed HIA?

Really? Eddie suggested post-game it was only a small hamstring tweak

Yeah Makalio definitely didn't attempt to wrap at all and his arms went straight to ground. Frizell possibly made a half-attempt, but it was well and truly after the initial hit.

ACT Brumbies v Chiefs - Saturday 27 May

When people say 'TMO didn't look at it', it's usually in respect to the TMO not referring it to the on-field referee as potential foul play, and then making a collective decision. I went back and watched it again - the TMO relayed "no foul play" to Pickerill so no further decision making...

SRP (Super Rugby Pacific) 2023 General Chat

I don't think anyone has taken issue with their lack of immediate success on the field - that was expected. The issue is the poor execution of building their identity as a Pasifika side, with respect to both fan engagement and their extensive alignment with NZ at both a club and national level...

Yeah absolutely agree - again, it's about consistency. There's been a line drawn in the sand with similar incidents in the past, and this should have been no different.

Highlanders v Queensland Reds, Forsyth Barr Stadium, Friday 26 May

Yeah, as others have said, it's the lack of consistency that's the biggest frustration. There were two clear-cut cases in this game which were broadcast, replayed on the big screen (O'Connor's definitely was), likely reviewed by the TMO, and probably met the YC threshold - yet there was not...

For those playing along at home and not checking the Reds' thread, Vest fractured his C7 vertebrae. The outcome definitely shouldn't determine the sanction, but it's difficult to fracture a vertebrae without direct and forceful contact. In hindsight, he really should've been medi-cabbed off too.

On a similar note, with Tate being out, do we continue to persist with Thomas or give Werchon a crack after his slap on the wrist?

Thomas' poor performance in attack aside, the Reds' backline really came down a peg when O'Connor was subbed for Paisami - a lot less cohesion and potency. Despite his strong performance, I would've liked to have seen Flook pulled for Paisami instead of JOC (James O'Connor).

As Dan said, Landers didn’t have the penalty there - granted, they should have, Zander got monstered again

Despite the loss, that was probably one of the Reds’ most complete performances of the season. Some amazing moments, a limited number of errors, and overall more polished performance. A huge team effort in the face of early losses to key players.
