I think the only way to effectively move forward with constitutional reform at the moment will be to finish the work of proper management structures for super rugby as a competition, with the 12 teams having a seat at the table and a voice in it's management. That then opens the door for proper...

I'm hoping he saw the current approach was not working and realised he needed to reset those relationships and chart his own course. He definitely appears to be finding his voice at the very least, which should help him in actually leading the process, rather than just reacting.

It's only the vote attached to the super rugby license they lose, they maintain two votes as a state union (1 for being a state or territory union, one for over 50,000 registered participants).

So this is now Phil Waugh's opportunity to step out of McLennan's shadow and step up as CEO. I've been pretty unimpressed by him so far but there have been recent green shoots to lend some modicum hope. He more than anyone can benefit from the clear air and use it to drive the game forward...

SMH confirming Herbert's appointment is interim: https://www.smh.com.au/sport/rugby-union/hamish-mclennan-ousted-as-rugby-australia-chairman-after-board-vote-20231119-p5el5e.html Also mentions Hamish was asked to remain on the board but chose to resign.

I'm not sure if it'll be a long term appointment or just an interim one while everything is sorted. Either way the forward direction is probably going to need to come from the CEO, where it probably should've been coming from for some time.

It's done, Hamish is gone. Daniel Herbert to replace him.

    Melbourne Rebels 2024

Yeah, was named in the not considered due to injury/super rugby commitments for the most recent under 20s squad, so he must still be eligible.

The big thing with Arundell is that he's only 21 with talents you can't coach, so there would be plenty of coaches interested in seeing what they could do with him. You're probably right about fullback over winger, but that just increases what he can get in league. The other aspect is the...

    Wallabies 2024

Not that I'm aware of though it might, but I don't think it would be tight enough to require super rugby rest periods. I do think it has a mandated break between end of season and when players are required to return for pre season as a form of load management.

Not mentioned in the article but I've seen elsewhere that there is interest in Henry Arundel and interest in the NRL from him. Could absolutely be a contract negotiation ploy, but the flow on from these cap exemption not as talked about is the targeting of foreign union players.

The big short term question will probably around playing load and resting during super rugby. I'm hoping they'll get rid of it, but not holding my breath.

The one and only Wallaby Coach thread

Turinui seems like some who could be a great Director of Rugby, but is short 5-10 years experience to be doing it an international level. He still only has minimal professional experience with a bit of time as an assistant in France and with the Rebels, the rest has been as a DoR at Randwick, an...

I think there's a lot still to work through in these decision's based on the wallabies coach and their ideas - For example Eddie was apparently pretty keen on shifting Petaia to 12. That may or may not be a view held by a new coach. More generally though I'm not sure "centralistion" will see...

Only question will be managing his body, particularly through the initial transition and recomp, but they won't need to play him too much too soon so it should be workable.

David Hanham (QRU CEO) was SEN Radio talking about centralisation https://www.sen.com.au/news/2023/11/15/queensland-reds-ceo-adresses-rugby-australias-centralisation-proposal-and/ In short they remain open to high performance centralisation, in particular citing player contracting models and...

Aside from his decision making which I do think he can improve with time in the saddle, Wright is really going to need to work on his kicking game to be a viable test fullback. The lack of good distance kicking options in the back 3 let the Brumbies down at times last year, most significantly in...
