Sinkers – atlci – Super Rugby

I like the concept of the team...but the problem would be getting support of the locals without any local players. I think you'd need at least a couple of local players and I don't think there are any Singaporeans good enough. I'd rather see a Pacific team based in Auckland...and hosting some...

    How to promote the game

Agreed with the sevens idea. It's ridiculous that the NRL has got the jump on SANZAR with their 9's concept. I would love to go to or watch 3-4 hours of sevens featuring star players. It would be fantastic. Who wouldn't want to watch the likes of Quade Cooper, Will Genia, Michael Hooper...

    Rugby News from unexpected places

In Sri Lanka there's an annual high school match (played over 2 legs) called the Bradby Shield that gets some pretty big crowds. The 1st leg of this year's 70th instalment is on youtube (including all the Sri Lankan coverage and English commentary). Quite amazing to see really. Not a huge...

    Brumbies v Sharks, round 13 2014

All I'll say is the ARU are lucky this game isn't on FTA! The South Korea vs Hong Kong RWC qualifying match is far more entertaining:

    How to promote the game

No one wants to do that. You're using the kind of defence people use to try and avoid change. From a marketing of the game perspective the 'product' is far, far more important than anything you can do around promotion. The only (almost only) things I ever hear fringe rugby fans complain about...

    How to promote the game

Yeah it really is key. The Honey Badger is just starting to get mainstream exposure now - a number of his videos have gone viral. A lot of people (and especially kids) that don't follow the sport know who he is now because of his post match interviews. Rugby needs to have house hold names. And...

    How to promote the game

I think Australian rugby needs to embrace the sports complexity. At the moment rugby is perceived by a lot of people as overly technical and boring when compared to other football codes. Perhaps there is scope to change that to more technically and strategically diverse and interesting than the...

    Broadcast options for Australian Rugby

Yeah that's my point. A professional crew with all the technology required to film a game at a decent quality. Anyway I give up. I suppose while streaming (at a decent quality too) is possible for amateur clubs in America and the likes of the Chilean Rugby Union, it's too big a challenge for...

    Broadcast options for Australian Rugby

Fair enough...but most of the teams will be playing out of decent grounds. At least 5 of them (Perth, Melbourne, Stars, Rays, Brisbane City) anyway.

    Broadcast options for Australian Rugby

Who will do the filming for the television highlights packages? Some bloke with a handycam? I doubt it. But hey, even that would be better than nothing. Even some of the minor unions of the world have successfully managed to stream games. Some Junior Gold Cup matches were streamed! It just...

    Broadcast options for Australian Rugby

I'd bet it's the rugby clubs within the colleges that pay for it rather than the actual College administration. And there are non-University affiliated clubs in America that manage to stream matches as well. It wouldn't have to be a slick production. Plus, surely there'll be some filming of...

    Broadcast options for Australian Rugby

Yes it's sad isn't it. But they're going to have to change soon otherwise it won't be long until the likes of Netflix destroys them.

    Super what?

The Australian economy is 4 times the size of South Africa's plus about 9 times bigger per capita. And the NRL and AFL have over 200 matches, all played at ideal times, compared to 125 in Super Rugby (soon to be a few less), plus 22 test matches in the SANZAR (plus Arg for the RC) countries...

    Broadcast options for Australian Rugby

Well I hope the ARU are talking with them about it. It's in Foxtel's interests for the NRC to be a long term success, and the more visible the competition is the greater chance it will have to grow. Perhaps they could set it up so that existing Fox Sports subscribers can watch it for free...

    USA and Canadian Rugby

It will be very interesting to see how both Canada and the US go against Scotland in June. Would be great for world rugby if either team could pull off the upset. It's not beyond the realms of possibility. The question is, how strong will the US and Canada have to be to be invited into the...

    Broadcast options for Australian Rugby

I hope the ARU stream the non-televised NRC matches. They should do it cheap but decent and offer it free through youtube. If the IRB can afford decent streaming (with commentary) for the women's 7's series and many American colleges and amateur clubs can afford streaming for their matches...

    Super Rugby Television Ratings 2014

They'll be massive. This is what rugby in Australia misses out on in Australia other than the once in a blue moon one of our teams host a super rugby grand final. Who knows, maybe in 9 years the NRC grand final will be played in front of such an audience.

    Super Rugby Television Ratings 2014

I reckon part of the reason the Tahs v Canes figures are strong is because it was such an entertaining game. Those are average figures and there's a lot of people that flick between channels and stick with what seems like the best game. When rugby's played well and with attacking intent from...

Western Sydney Rams . NRC Official Team Thread

Good points Pfitzy, but on the other hand I think Thursday evening games would be attractive to teenagers and adults attending without kids. i.e. the people that pay for tickets anyway. You'd get groups of people going straight from work as you do with Friday night games. If you worked in...

    Super what?

Just checked and the Premier Soccer League in South Africa has a reported €200 million deal over 5 years. Less than a third of the AFL and NRL deals. And the current SANZAR deal is US$437 Million. That's less than half of the NRL and AFL deals (and Supersport pays less than half of the total)...
