Super Rugby Au Round 7 - Reds v Rebels @ Suncorp Stadium, 7:15pm Sat 15 Aug

At his best Foley was a dynamic ball runner. Not sure that I see that attribute in Harrison? Lolesio for me.

Super Rugby Au Round 7 - Reds v Rebels @ Suncorp Stadium, 7:15pm Sat 15 Aug

That was an incredible effort by the Reds. When the YC came out of the pocket with 10 to go, I thought the Rebels would swamp them. Incidentally, I reckon thought should be given to trialling Pone F. as a #8. He seems to have a lot of toe for a big bloke.

Too many rugby supporters are too parochial, unfortunately.

    Shute Shield 2020

Could have handed out a yellow to Uni not long after lemons, just a penalty. Southern scored, so I suppose that is justice of a kind.

State of the Union (origin) discussion

There are three big differences. Firstly, there is a long tradition behind the Barbarians name. Secondly, some of the Baabaas could be imports (other nationalities). Thirdly, the Barbarians are pledged to play open, adventurous, running rugby.

If we are dredging up ideas that might work, we could always consider going back and thinking about the Barbarians as a concept. It has some interesting attributes: firstly, the name does have a strong historical identity (which has been lost a bit along the way), secondly, there are some...

    Shute Shield 2020

The Wildfires played their last game in 1999. They beat Eastwood, and we went on to win our first First Grade Premiership that year. Mrs Wamberal and I were there, at the home ground of the Charlestown Butcher Boys (a local league team). Another nice coincidence is that the Penrith Emus just...

State of the Union (origin) discussion

It might be worth revisiting the reason that SOO took off so quickly. In those far-off days, all the money and power in RL was concentrated in Sydney, television money and the poker machine palaces made sure of that. Any good young player who emerged in QLD would be poached to play in the...

    1. I believe in club rugby, have played it and watched it and been a member for more years than I can count, just about. My club chose me, I happened to have been born in Eastwood. 2. If we want the best for our players, at all levels, they should be free to choose for whom they play, as a...

I disagree. A player who lives, for example, on the northern beaches can not be forced to affiliate with, say, Penrith, unless it is an affiliation in name only.

At the end of the day it is basically up to the local rugby supporters to put their hands up and do a lot of the spadework. Grassroots rugby, as the name implies, grows from the ground up. Yes, it can be watered and fertilised from above. I am no gardener, but I do know that water and...

Victoria beat New South Wales before the war. Victoria does have a proud rugby tradition, sadly it fell away a lot.

The district clubs in Sydney and Brisbane actually perform at a pretty high standard.

When were the glory years? I was a big fan as a kid, used to go to the SCG to watch every day of every game (during the school holidays, and weekends). Attendances were tiny.

    Shute Shield 2020

And West Harbour. Actually we had a huge amount of trouble with the Beasties in the first half last weekend (have not watched the second half yet) - we should have been 20 behind at lemons. Edit: I watched the second half, and still cannot understand how we managed to steal the game.

    Reds 2020

The Reds have put together some very good rugby this season. A bit more experience, they will win a lot more than they lose.

    Shute Shield 2020

Not to be picky, but can we start calling the northerners the Hunter Wildfires? It would be good if this name catches on, I hope the team can be seen as representing the whole Hunter region, and not just Newie. The Woodies hanging on to beat the Beasties away was a bit unexpected, to moi, anyway.

Super Rugby AU Round 6 - Waratahs vs Reds @ SCG, Saturday 8 August 2020

Stunningly bad performance by the Reds. Not sure if this possibility has been mentioned before, but the sudden death of Jordan Petaia's father might have thrown them all off balance.
