    Refereeing decisions

Hugh Jarse, the situation is a little better than this as every NSWRRA referee coach in Sydney, who spread between Grade, Subbies and Colts, has a communication box with a vest with a transmitter and a receiver for the referee coach. It is only a 1 way communication tool (ie the coach can't...

Penalty try Hurricanes vs Blues - What the?

I don't believe it is mandatory requirement to have repeated infringements for penalty tries from scrums but I have acknowledged previously that you could provide me with many examples. I do think that front rowers drop it early on the first one to get either another shot at winning the hit...

Penalty try Hurricanes vs Blues - What the?

Yes, this is a possible outcome but I think we need to look at specific footage to have an appropriate debate.

Penalty try Hurricanes vs Blues - What the?

IS, IMO you only assess the "probable" test. Repeated infringements should be dealt with by YCs. I suspect where there is both a reasonable chance of a try and repeated infringements, you would see a penalty try as referees are unlikely to give the defending team any benefit of doubt (not a...

Penalty try Hurricanes vs Blues - What the?

No the "take the player out of the equation" interpretation is not relevant for scrums but it is for dangerous tackles. For scrums, the question is whether a try would probably have been scored but for the collapse. I disagree with ACT Crusader in that I believe repeated infrignements that...

Penalty try Hurricanes vs Blues - What the?

Scott, I guess what makes this difficult is that this is not a new interpretation and the situation occurs very rarely. I think there was a very similar incident in a NZ test against a NH nation in the June window in the last 5 years and I can definitely remember going to a RWC qualifier in...

Penalty try Hurricanes vs Blues - What the?

IS, the Laws aren't black and white and so we have many interpretations. "Probable" can mean >50% but it can also mean likely. A Savea try was a likely outcome which was prevented by Foul Play. For mine, this situation could satisify the Laws even without the "player taken away"...

    Shute Shield 2013

Other than Balmain, would any Subbies club want that? I suspect most clubs want to play Subbies football.

Penalty try Hurricanes vs Blues - What the?

I understand where you are coming from. I guess the return question is why do we assume that the infringing player could prevent the try legally when he decided to take an illegal option?

Penalty try Hurricanes vs Blues - What the?

Yes re referee. I don't think I could find you a "document" but the concept would be openly discussed in a referee education session on penalty tries in Australia and it would seem to be the case in NZ as well.

Penalty try Hurricanes vs Blues - What the?

Sorry I should have added - the difference between off-side and this situation is that off-side is not Law 10 - Foul Play. It could be if it was deliberately off-side and I think you could and do see penaly tries from deliberate off-side.

Penalty try Hurricanes vs Blues - What the?

The words that Vinny used are commonly used by referees in determining whether a penalty try should be awarded - it wasn't just a poor chooice of words - more it is one interpretation on determining a penalty try. This is a situation that shows how hard it can be to adjudicate on penalty tries...
