    The Official Shield Thread.

True, but by seeking lots of small donations it'd be a great way of also creating awareness about it. The more people that contribute the better chance this has of being truly supported as an important trophy by the wider rugby community.

    The Official Shield Thread.

I think the more people that contribute to the cost the better. I.e. it would be a lot cooler to have 600 people put in $25 each than to have 150 people put in $100 each. I'm not sure if 600 people is realistic or not, but maybe it is. It could be an idea limiting the donation amount...

    Pacific Nations Cup

Awesome win by Fiji over Samoa 39-29 to win the title. Was a great game. Both sides should be very strong at the world cup.

    Australian Rugby / RA

Jones would probably be shocked to learn that Wales won the 7's RWC in 2009 and Canada finished ahead of Australia in the 2013/14 world series with Geraint John as coach. The lack of knowledge is ridiculous. Espnscrum should be embarrassed to publish such drivel.

That may well be the case, but if the Wallabies test is a commercial failure then it would discourage us and other top teams from touring there in the short-medium term. The All Blacks test last year was historic, every subsequent match (even by the All Blacks) won't be. In a way it's a better...

Well the Wallabies might not have the brand that the All Blacks do, but they're certainly a much bigger drawcard than the Harlequins A team! But the pricing does seem too steep. $200 for the best seats! I think that All Blacks game was mostly filled with rugby people from all around the...

Not sure what thread to put this on, but I imagine the ARU must be a little concerned with the ticket sales for the match against the USA in Chicago. They were hoping for a $1 million windfall and somewhere close to the 60k the All Blacks got last year. But looking at the seating map on...

    Pacific Nations Cup

I wouldn't read much into that Japan v USA result. The US were almost at full strength (admittedly minus their best player in Samu Manoa) while Japan were missing a number of their best players like Tanaka, Horie, Tui, Leitch and a couple of others. Eddie Jones also said before the game that he...

    Japan Super Rugby team

I'll give you some. The Japanese national team defeated Wales without their Lions players a couple of years ago. They've also beaten Italy recently and got within 2 points of NZ Maori. These are Super Rugby quality teams. Add say 5 or 6 international quality imports to that base and I think they...

    Japan Super Rugby team

I know baseball is company based but it's the biggest sport in the country with much greater tradition. My understanding is that it isn't growing though while soccer has substantially. I've also read that soccer didn't really take off in Japan until they created the J League - which moved away...

    Japan Super Rugby team

Well Super Rugby is effectively a foreign competition even with 1 Japanese team. The problem with Japan's domestic league is that it's company based. And unless you work for one of the companies why would you support them? Basically it's never going to become more popular. I think the path...

    Japan Super Rugby team

Rugby is also very niche in Melbourne and Perth. And Tokyo is many times bigger. This team just needs to get the local rugby community behind it at first - then build from that. From there what would really help is if Japan had a real star player come through - a Japanese Dan Carter or Israel...

World Rugby Sevens Caravan coming to Sydney

I think a winger like Speight can manage it. I assume growing up in Fiji that he'd have played a lot of 7's and he certainly played well for the Brumbies in that club world 7's event they won a couple of years ago. He's a natural. A few of the better players from teams like Canada and the US...

    Maybe Liam Gill?

    Rugby TV ratings 2015

Well it seems like it's got more popular in Sydney and NSW too. I actually think it would be less popular in Sydney now if NSW had won 9 of the last 10. Before this period of QLD dominance NSW had won 3 in a row and there was already talk about the concept potentially dying. If it had gone on...

    Rugby TV ratings 2015

It's funny how this has adversely affected the popularity of the Bledisloe Cup when State of Origin has got bigger and bigger during Queensland's decade of dominance. Though I suppose it probably wouldn't be the same if NSW had won the last 9 out of 10.

    Rugby TV ratings 2015

I think the Bledisloe Cup could get pretty big ratings on a week day. Especially if it was a decider. Or even just a home Bledisloe Cup match if it was part of a 2 game series (with the winner determined by the total score over 160 minutes).

    Rugby TV ratings 2015

The competition was pretty fierce on Saturday night. Swans vs Hawks and Dragons vs Rabbitohs. Plus Ashes, plus Tour de France plus British Open plus Fremantle vs Carlton. State of Origin is played on Wednesday nights and clashes with nothing. More people are also at home on a week night...

    Pacific Nations Cup

Samoa were missing guys like Kahn Fotuali'i, Tim Nanai-Williams, Tusi Pisi, Kane Thompson, Joe Tekori, Census Johnson and a few others. Also, the USA aren't that bad and Scotland aren't that good. Last year Scotland beat the US by 18 points, but really struggled against Canada in a 2 point...
