Battle of the form teams: Reds vs Stormers Brisbane

I am looking forward to this game a lot. The Stormers crushed the Chiefs in pretty much every facet of the game. They will have seen what the Reds can do. What do the Reds have up their sleeves this week? Something new? More of the same? Is the cupboard bare? The head says Stormers, but it seems...

Waratahs V Brumbies. Sydney Olympic Stadium.

For some reason, form seems to count less in local derbies, so the Brumbies' performance last week doesn't really comfort me. Looking at the competition table, the two teams have won exactly the same number of games, with the Tahs ahead courtesy of bonus points, so there isn't really that big a...

    Will Chambers

Mitchell has had a quiet couple of weeks, but he has been outstanding this season. If we are considering only the players regularly playing 13, then there are really only 4 to choose from (one for each Oz team). Chambers had a good game against the Bulls, but I don't think that it puts him...

    Reds v Bulls. Bris Vegas.

Re: Reds v Bulls Suncorp Stadium Saturday April 17 Great game. I loved it. Genia just edged the scrum half battle, but Du Preez was pretty impressive too. They played with great daring, passion, guts, skill. Keep it coming boys! Genia, Cooper, Ioane and Hynes must be certainties for the...

G&GR Reds Player of the Match (v Bulls)

Funny, I was cheering the Reds on with everyone else, but now you've reminded me of the the sort of attitude that would make me want to see them lose. On the topic of the other Aussie teams, the Reds have lost to one of them and have yet to play another....beware pride before a fall. Anyhow...

How old can you be? I'm still waiting for the call...

G&GR Force Player of the Match (v Blues)

So much potential, so many opportunities, so little follow through: 3. Brown (lots of energy in attack and defence) 2. Hodgson (put himself about very well) 1.Turner (great service and energy from their 3rd choice scrumhalf!) Pocock came into the game in the latter stages, as did O'Connor...

    Rugby coaching

I agree that fitness and basic skills should be the first priority, as the team which is superior in those areas will tend to be the winning team. [At the elite level, fitness and basic skills are almost uniformly high, meaning that other areas become more significant] Beyond that all I can...

G&GR Brumbies Player of the Match (versus Hurricanes)

The Brumbies were bad, but not equally bad across the park, so I am happy to give out a few points: 3. Chisholm 2. Hand 1. Moore I didn't think Huxley did all that much, although what he did was very good (there was one brilliant kick chase and recovery). I hope they play that badly against...

    Crusaders v Waratahs. Christchurch.

Just saw the match. FUCK! The referee, Beale intercept, and Crusaders try seem to have been discussed pretty thoroughly already, so I'll leave them alone. Overall, it felt like lots of small missed opportunities added up to make one big missed opportunity. The Tahs got themselves into good...

G&GR Waratahs Player of the Match (versus Crusaders)

for various reasons, I have only now seen the match, so whether or not my vote counts, here it is: 3. Waugh (rolled back the years and did it all) 2. Beale (great all round game, thinks so fast. was onside - shame) 1. Palu (will be missed badly)

    The Number Eight Situation.

Please not Brown - even if he didn't have regular brain explosions he isn't big enough. Hodgson, Pocock, Elsom - 6, 7, 8

    Are Aussies scared to maul?

not contesting line outs is crazy in my book, but I note the Tahs have been rectifying that problem in the last couple of weeks. Back on to mauling: I think having a couple of good maul organisers is important for attacking mauls (and I don't mean someone popping his head up at the back)...

so were you at Maccas? I wonder, do you wander or wonder, or both? but the best bit has to be your TPN pep talk - you are a comic genius!

    Crusaders v Waratahs. Christchurch.

If there is any doubt about the fitness of Palu and Waugh I wouldn't play them. It is always best to start the match with 22 players who are fit to play. I do REALLY want them to be fit though as the Crusaders are a lot tougher than the Cheetahs.

    Are Aussies scared to maul?

Re: Why can't we maul? On another thread I said: To further elaborate, maybe the low drive advocated by Bruce would work if used in small groups (2 or 3) for stopping a maul, but a more upright 'traditional' maul strikes me as being the better option for attack. It is the deception as well as...

    Chris Hickey

    1. Horne was injured last year - if he knew there was a lack of depth in that position, why not rectify it? Surely there is a 13 somewhere in the world who could have been convinced to sign. 2. I don't care why he came, or how much he cost, I'm concerned about his often utterly shit play. 3. I...

G&GR Waratahs Player of the Match (versus Cheetahs)

This is a tricky week, as none of the forwards stood out in the way they did in previous weeks - but they did enough to get loads of quality ball to the backs. The front row are out despite loads of good work around the park (including a Robinson and a Baxter try), because the scrum was shaky...
