    CAS Rugby 2014

I popped down to the Cranbrook v Trinity game today. I'm a few beers deep at the moment, but in a nutshell: - The Cranbrook backrow is excellent. They were strong ball runners (particularly the 8) and Trinity could barely hold onto the ball for more than a couple of phases, except for a period...

What's the replacement like? Cranbrook always struggles a bit for depth.

Tahs v Lions, round 14, SUNDAY 18 May

I think there could be a pick-up in momentum. In that intervening period there's obviously a Saturday arvo Wallabies test at the SFS, then Brumbies at Homebush and another SFS Sunday arvo game against the Highlanders. That's three consecutive weekends of great rugby, preceded by two further...

I think one of the Cranbrook wingers?

    CAS Rugby 2014

What I'm about to say is totally unrelated to rugby, but I think that's a reasonably recent development. Back when I finished they were down around the 60s in the rankings. Good on Aloys - quality school. That's all. As you were.

If anyone is after a good bunch of photos from the Cranbrook v Barker game, the facebook page "Cranbrook Ministry of Propaganda" has a good album up. The main thing I got from it is that the Cranbrook No. 8 is legitimately pretty big...

Rugby League players who could have/could make the switch

I think he was just saying that there's not really a realistic prospect of earning more in Australian rugby than in Australian league, so the only converts will be people who are genuinely keen. I think there are probably exceptions to that rule, but in general it's probably on the money.

Auckland Blues To Infinity and Beyond

Izzy doesn't count. Sometimes the genius kid is allowed to skip a year.

Good luck to Benji - hope he gets to finish his career with dignity, as he deserves. Mungos should come to Super Rugby via France. No super coach is going to give someone an on-field apprenticeship.

ANZAC XV - Aus/NZ vs the World

This is my team with all different players. 15. Piatau. 14. Cummins. 13. C. Smith 12. Nonu. 11. Savea. 10. Cruden. 9. A. Smith. 8. Read. 7. Hooper. 6. Levave 5. Sam Carter. 4. Retallick. 3. Kepu. 2. TPN. 1. Woodcock. Of the original team, I'd probably bring in Folau at 15, Fardy at 6...

    Rugby - not set pieces

I was at the Royal in Paddington watching the Tahs-Brumbies on the weekend, and Julian Huxley was having his buck's night at the same pub. He was kitted out in a Wallabies jersey, so it was tough to miss him. I like the idea that his buck's night was watching his old team get a great win...

    Reds 2014

I find this turn of phrase really amusing. On more rugby related news - the seppuku going on is a bit premature. Coming at this as a Crusaders fan, in my part of the world it's perfectly acceptable for a team with a spine of regular internationals to get out of the blocks like a horse-drawn...

    The Pulverisation of Australian Rugby

Absolutely. But let's take a fairly modest aspiration - if a decent chunk of the US starts watching the world cup (and that's not outrageous - especially as they are in line to host within the next 3 or 4 cycles) then suddenly a whole new range of sponsor would be interested in having their logo...

    The Pulverisation of Australian Rugby

I'd be curious to know the extent of it. Particularly, I get excited about the prospect of selling international/super rugby TV rights into the US (probably a pipe-dream, but we'll see). MLS teams over there sell for $40 million, and soccer can't be that much more popular than rugby. Obviously...

    The Pulverisation of Australian Rugby

I have a question that some of you might have more insight into than I do: What proportion of the ARU's income would be paid in foreign currency? When the Wallabies undertake those additional money-spinner tests outside of the November window, I imagine that they are paid in pounds. Equally...

    Six Nations 2014

Re: Ireland v Wales - that's what happens when a team playing very well meets a team playing very poorly. It felt like Wales had no structure, which is strange for them. Many one off forward runners, and they rarely spread it because their back line just wasn't in place. By contrast, Ireland...

Ben Mowen survives alleged mutiny plot.........

He reminds me of Reuben Thorne. Thorne is one of my favourite players ever, but there was always a sense that even he didn't really think he was cut out for test matches.

I've definitely been responsible for stats like that in the past.
