That's because Rugby is a far less popular, less lucrative and has less players vying for spots We act like these guys should be automatically paid like the top 1% of earners when there isn't any evidence they are worth that

All 4 of the US sports use non-guaranteed or incentive based contracts. NFL uses it most, but they all use it

    They are leaving anyway though

Why not? What model are player contracts amounts based on? Seems to be the powerbrokers just decide how much to pay someone based on a whim as opposed to basing it on their tangible worth The salary cap and individual contracts in US Sports are directly correlated to the profits made by the...

Quantifying effort isn't really feasible, but incentive based, partially non-guaranteed contracts are essentially what US sports run off (especially contact sports) so I don't know why Australian rugby players should somehow be above it

Problem is that the current money being shelled out to players means Australian rugby loses money hand over fist It would at least make sense if the top players here made any tangible difference on the field to either their Super team or the National team, but they don't even do that. As it...

    Aussie Player Exodus

There aren't any skill position players that have actually succeeded through this, so there is no evidence of Petaia being any different than the rest. The IPP is a marketing tool for the NFL, nothing more. And it's obviously succeeding

Why does it have to be an either or? And why are we pretending that these two things are related?

    Aussie Player Exodus

The goal of the international player pathway is to create headlines in different countries and different sport fanbases. The players don't count against the salary cap and don't count against roster numbers and are paid by the NFL so it's win/win for all involved The NFL combine makes NFL...

It's solved with two separate deals. Super Rugby team would pay him to play for them, and national team would pay him to play for them

This is the biggest problem with the whole thing. Show me any successful comp that does this. Using the elite domestic competition in the Southern Hemisphere as a feeder comp. Whats the point It's a professional competition. Being sustainable literally means making money

It would be on a player to player basis. You could guarantee money to certain players At a certain point there needs to be a longer term thought process. Instead of desperately overpaying to keep some players in Super Rugby now, genuinely make changes to Super Rugby so it can be a sustainable...

Super Rugby deals should be different to National deals. This is pretty standard in other sports, Rugby seems to be the only sport that makes elite professional competitions that are trying to make money essentially feeder comps

He's playing in the same competition and helping that competition's media rights deal by playing for a team that more Australians would watch simply because he's playing for them Super Rugby needs to adapt, or it's going to die

    Australian Rugby / RA

Well they really need to modernize the way they contract then, right? You cant just use Super Rugby as a feeder comp for internationals and still expect people to care

He's 6'8 and 166kgs as a mobile offensive tackle. Petaia is an injury prone below average athlete by NFL standards

It gets paid when he actually plays for the Wallabies, like every other sport Rest periods? They need to go, absolute blight on the game and counterproductive to sustaining a respectable comp Player movement within super rugby is the only way to genuinely create interest in the comp

    Wallabies 2024

He wasn't exactly a fitness freak in Brisbane

To be fair, the main reason people aren’t interested is we suck. It’s essentially become an NZ domestic comp with how badly Australian teams have been the last decade
