He (L'Estrange) has been struggling and is injured. I actually hope the Kiwi born Siddall gets the start. He is a little more exciting than the safe L'Estrange.

    How to promote the game

Sevens. Seriously. Not the 10 hours per day for 2 days that wears on everybody (fans and players), but the condensed tourney similar to what the English Premiership has started. 3-4 hours in a stadium with 4-6 total 7s teams (like the 5 Super Rugby franchises!). I promise that if you get the...

    Exit from Super Rugby?

I read on a news site (not a blog) that they were training/playing out of Stellenbosch to reduce travel. But now I cannot find that link. They would play the South African conference games at Stellenbosch then have the rare home games in ARG against NZ/AUS sides.

    Exit from Super Rugby?

Is the final spot a truly open tender? From anywhere? I have read the team will be physically based in SA (just like the ARG team). Why not a combined North American team then? Canada/USA combo team, with a few Saffas and maybe Euro players mixed in, but branded NA for the media market...

Looks like some good athletes showed up for the combine, will be interesting to see how this progress. http://rugbyamerica.net/?p=3823

23 New Western Force Jersey Sponsors in 2014

Looks like they are bringing back the gold and black hooped jerseys for the Perth Spirit in the NRC: http://www.westernforce.com.au/NewsEvents/NewsArticles/tabid/905/ArticleID/11193/Perth-Spirit-returns-for-National-Rugby-Championship.aspx

So when is the NRC Sevens Tournament scheduled for? ;)

How much money are they paying him? I don't think any. If Ahman Green, as a sport celebrity, can help lure a few athletes from a different demographic into rugby, then why not use him? It doesn't have to be ex-NFL players he persuades, but maybe some kids that look up to him. Ahman was (maybe...

    Rugby 7s general chat

O'Connor is still with the team in Sydney, and will coach through at least HK. Job posting for new coach closes March 24: http://www.sportspeople.com.au/sp/position/PositionDisplay.asp?ID=27810

    USA and Canadian Rugby

I played with BYU (96-98) at Uni then Belmont Shore (1998-2001) and Tempe/Red Mountain (01-06) due to a career move to Arizona. Rep rugby with SoCal Griffins and PacCoast Grizzlies. Belmont Shore could compete with lower teams in the Brisbane comp. I just interviewed Alex Magleby (new USAR...

    Rugby 7s general chat

Best 7s coach available is Mike Friday, proven Series track record at England and Kenya. Outside of that, you have a few Kiwis like Geoff Alley that have been coaching 7s at a very high level for a long time, but will never take Titch's job. They are outsiders, but I know Mike is very good at...

    Rugby 7s general chat

I would demand a sound record as a Sevens coach should come first-why hire someone without a proven track record of successful COACHING? He would not be asked to play, so there is no need for credibility as a former player (a lot of top coaches never played at a high level). There is some...

    Rugby 7s general chat

A tiny uphill battle. They sit 5th now, one place out of auto-qualifying with a young team. They would most likely only have to beat Samoa in the Oceania qualifier (not an easy task, but they lead the series 39-31-2.) However, Samoa could finish top 4 with Fiji and NZ, making a win against...

    Rugby 7s general chat

Unfortunate for the Aussie 7s team, everyone holds O'Connor in high regard in terms of coaching. He does not have access to the top players and continually fields the youngest team on the Series. What other 7s coaches are in Australia, aside from Walshy who is doing tremendously well with the...

Maximising the opportunity of Rugby 7s in Australia

9s has a very long way to go before any Olympic discussion can even take place. 1. Women's needs to be developed on a global scale. 2. League needs to be developed on a global scale. Australia and Northern England is not global. Having 70% of the RLWC come from Aussie lineage/competitions is...

Maximising the opportunity of Rugby 7s in Australia

And a pipe dream of mine (meaning it would NEVER happen, but I wish it would): ARU, NZRU and NRL partner to form a hybrid 7s game, like the NRL stated doing with NZRU. Use NRL and Super Rugby franchises and have inter-code competition over the summer!

Maximising the opportunity of Rugby 7s in Australia

Maybe not in the beginning. And maybe the lure will be to see the U20s and a few fading stars in action. It does not have to be BBL at the start, T20 took a very long time to develop against the inertia of the cricket traditionalists. This might be a long term strategic decision by the NRL to...

Jake: England v SA 'the future'; ditch Super Rugby

I vote to ditch the Staffers from Super Rugby and add Americas. Buenos Aires, LA, San Fran, Seattle and Vancouver. East coast N America would be tough for travel. It is actually better travel to America from NZ and Eastern Aus than to South Africa, plus the time zones line up better. Its only a...

    Rugby 7s general chat

Scotland will be interesting to watch, and they could top France, Spain and Portugal (and eventually Russia, Belgium, Germany, Netherlands, and Italy who have all significantly increased sevens rugby funding). I'd say watch out for Russia 7s in 3 years and Belgium 7s in about 5 years. The Euro...
