Wallabies 2025

I was pretty shat off when RA pinched Cheika from the Tahs. He'd won a flag and I think we'd made the finals 2 years after. Then they gave him the Wallabies gig ( which had some pretty big ups and some lows) which I felt hurt the Tahs badly - I know there is a balance between rewarding good organically grown coaching against fucking over Supe teams. This chat about Kiss is a prime example.

Cheika started at the Tahs in 2013, won the comp in 2014 and took over the Wallabies' the same year due to Link leaving...

The following year the Tahs made the semis and then he was with the Wallabies full time.

I'm obviously of a different mindset. I want all our Super franchises to go well but the priority is the Wallabies and if that means that the coach of [insert your favourite franchise] has to resign as he's seen as the best choice for the national gig, then so be it.

I don't think with what I've said is opposed to this, I've just disagreed with @Braveheart81 inference that Reds fans think Kiss should get it and would be dirty if he doesn't. I don't think that's the case as all 3 coaches have fairly similar claims to the role so I'd be indifferent to any of them. Not because they've taken a coach from Super Rugby, rather I don't think any of the Aus Super Rugby coaches are really the best candidate.

Excuse my ignorance but just what does a Super Rugby coach (or assistant coach) do between June and November?

For 40-50 hours a week

And why couldn't they be Wobs assistant coaches
Fuck it - Wallabies coaching conglomerate of all Super coaches

They can be. Steve Larkham did both under Cheika.

I think the problem is mainly the head coach doesn't want them. They want their own trusted staff.

It was the logical solution when Eddie was in charge. Instead he went with league and NH club discards. It made no sense to me.

There is very little time between end of Super season and WB tests. If you are preparing for the tests you'll need more time than that. If you are preparing for the tests you are not giving your day job the full attention it needs. More than this, if a Super coach deputising as WB assistant is involved with squad training, selection during the season, well it's rife for views that are not broadly open and fair.

I don't like the idea at all.

Personally I think that’s underselling the Super Rugby head coach. Correct me if I’m wrong but the players are given 3-4 weeks off and then start prep for next year. I know it has happened before but I think we want our Super head coaches working full time to maximise their own teams performance.

Not to mention that a lot of contract negotiations occur then. It’s not really a good look if one of the super teams is negotiating a contract with a wallaby player from another club and the head coach is also a Wallaby assistant. I don’t care how much integrity they have. That would be almost impossible for them not to exert some sort of influence.

I agree it can be done but personally I think it’s far from ideal.

I love the idea of the super rugby coaches being involved with the Wallabies but I also think we need someone else in charge to run things when they are busy.
