Queensland Reds 2024

Reds have shared that George Blake is heading over to NPC to play for the Manawatu Turbos between seasons

Thought he had an entertaining exposure to internationals with Wales. I wonder what teh plan is if we are touring without Faessler and Nasser?

Heard dobbins was looking at Waratahs?

The UQ hooker Tierney looks decent from the bits I've seen; but I haven't watched much QPR this year... I think he had a family member on these forums who championed his cause a bit.

Not sure if that was a family member or just a height supremacist (he hated Rhys Van Nek calling him too short to scrummage effectively, from what I remember).

But Tierney does look to be developing well. I'd be pulling Craig in first though, he already has exposure to the reds environment and a combination with De Lutiis. Kaitu'u is the other one who might be worth looking at after the Force have released him. If he doesn't have a contract yet he could be a good super ready option if we need cover.

I would rather blood a kid than play Kaitu’u. He looks well past his best
Usually I'd agree, but our hookers are 28 (Asiata), 25 x 2 (Faessler and Nasser), 23 (Blake) and 21 (Craig). That's a young group and I'm not sure we need to look to youth too much beyond them right now, whereas we might need a ready to go emergency call up in case of injury next year and the broader squad would benefit from the most competitive option possible.

As far as Kaitu'u goes he does look past his peak but I also think he has plenty more to offer, and more than he was showing at the Force, if he's in the right environment. The best way to test that is to bring him in for a while. Only really makes sense if he hasn't found a contract for next year yet, but in that case it's beneficial for both parties.

It's probably much of a muchness though, we've only really got one off games for the period Blake is in the npc and Faessler and Nasser are with the wallabies, so the 3rd choice behind Asiata and Craig isn't going to get much (or any) time outside of injury.

Surely there's no chance. About to go on tour with inevitable injuries and hopefully a tough build up of training and games from the RC.

let the kids and fringe blokes show why they deserve a contract or match day spot next season.

For the most part no, but if someone like Petaia who has been out for much of the season is fit (and hanging around) I could definitely see Schmidt wanting him to get 40 minutes warm up before taking him on tour. Liam Wright might be another, if he doesn't make it back in time for the Bledisloe games.

Part of it might also come down to how they manage the Australia A squad - is it going to be a separate squad or will they just take a larger group of wallabies over? If it's the later I'd expect some of them to still be available for this game.

Sending Wright out there makes me nervous. He'll do something else and be out for 6 weeks.
Honestly it's more likely to happen in the warm up or training based on his history. Either way he's probably a hell of a lot less likely to get hurt with a bit of returning game time under his belt in a friendly against a Japanese club side than going in cold to a test against the English at a Twickenham week a later.
