You need to learn a bit about scrums - and then have a good look at the scrums to ascertain what actually happened. The ref let blatant penalty behaviour by both the Crus LHP and THP go. Others above have spelled it out.

Just to spell this out. In spite his piss-taking demeanor, not only is Pfitzy a prop, and a ref, if you drop into the Subbies Rugby thread you'll see that he has basically run a rugby club for, I don't know, longer than I've been here which is some time. I presume he has also completed at least some of the RA coaching credentials. It shouldn't surprise you, but the forum has actual experts or at least highly experienced people on board posting. That doesn't mean to not take them on. But it might help to know a bit more about the longer term personalities before throwing out statements like that.

@dru I agree regarding @Pfitzy and his knowledge of scrums. As I said earlier, I have no reason to doubt @Mark Panga - I just thought it was funny that it played out that way. I like debates about aspects of the game that I don't fully comprehend, as I guess you do too.

They had a pretty good playing group mate…. More concerning is a number within that playing group that actually regressed this year.

It's another age old issue. We take talented youngsters and over the course of 5 or 6 seasons of development turn them into exactly the same player they started off as, but older. Certainly not unique to the Tahs though they do take it to the level of an artform.

McDermott is a prime example IMO. Maybe made some marginal gains in work on areas but barely noticeable.

Interesting. Thank you for the cv information. Thing is - surely it’s preferable for “experts” to analyse and discuss aspects of the play rather than player bash - and make sweeping and subjective statements about their general ability. We could all hopefully learn something then.

This isn’t a bar where good old boys throw opinions around like peanut shells, to be swept away tomorrow and forgotten. It’s a public forum and the comments stay live for years and are searchable for years.

Experts should be circumspect in making subjective, sweeping value judgments - for the very reason that people take their opinions seriously. Just how you’re urging me to take this judgment seriously.

They are all good players. That’s why they are playing Super Rugby. For an expert to say - someone is the worst player in his position of all the possible players in all the squads is just not helpful - and it’s still not a statement of fact - it’s only his opinion. And one with which I strongly disagree. Players aren’t playing the same way that they were 30 years ago - times have changed and technical rules are meant to be enforced for player safety reasons as well as fairness.

It was a tough night at the office for the Reds. No need to put the boot in. “Experts”can and do get it wrong. So do mere mortals like me.

I think for some Tahs players, plateau or marginal gains would have been better, but they seemingly regressed over the season, and compared to previous years.

For Tate, yeah his box kicking improved some from when he has come on the scene but never reached the level required at test level and hasn’t seen to improved since, I’d argue though his game management has improved significantly from when he started. His name has been thrown around a lot after this match, probably his worse game of the year in a season he was the form Aus halfback for large chunks. But I think focussing on the halves, missed where this game was actually lost and that was the breakdown/scrum.

Just watching the Brumbies v Canes fame now, I commented last night about the Reds breakdown performance and queried whether it was technique or S&C. The Brumbies are holding their own and not getting blown away at the breakdown. Is it the Laurie Fisher legacy (his influence and priority of the breakdown) or do they have a better S&C program? Or are the Crusaders stronger that the Canes at the breakdown?
