Sydney Subbies 2025

In fairness not all Shute clubs have the luxury of excess colts. Unsure how Manly & Warringah go but don't think Parra, Wests, Souths, Eastwood are "warehousing"

Seems to be a few clubs that might be able to help out
I think what everyone wants is a better set up so that when a Shute club has these excess players they don’t invent an extra competition for them to play in or just turn them away. They interact with there local clubs and actively push players there.
We all know it’s how the club promotes this sort of arrangement as to how successful it is

Yeah I'd say nobody expects these clubs to actively keep their local clubs afloat, but some sort of relationship would do nothing but help when SOME of the clubs are actively turning blokes away who will likely just leave the game to pursue other things on Saturdays... women, beers, Call of Duty now Verdansk is back etc.

Probably more so exceptions than rules but plenty of Subbies clubs have let/encouraged (or in some cases lost) fantastic talent to make the jump to Shute Shield, from the top of my head, Richard Woolf and Ezra Luxton both played subbies (Knox) before moving to Norths/Easts and having long careers in first grade and the NRC, Charlie Gamble famously plied his trade with Petersham before landing with Easts and the Tahs.

Historians can go further back to Semi Qatavi in 1999. Some of these clubs might also find a diamond in the rough or two so it's not all one way traffic.

Anecdotally, I'm told Gordon has been turning Colts away this year, having filled the 3 requisite teams and more than extensive benches for each. The worry the club has is that they will lose these guys from the game all together, not to Subbies.

It's baffling to me that they don't link up with certain local subbies clubs like Chatswood, St Ives etc, let them call themselves the Chatswood-Gordon Highlanders and see if they can keep a core group of them playing together so the game doesn't lose them. Could have them still train with Gordon, promotion/relegation between the teams/clubs so they still feel attached to the club they went to etc

I don't see how that doesn't so easily kill two birds with one stone.
This is why having these alignments would help, however you could also see how this would disadvantage certain clubs too. Imagine playing Chatswood with Gordon discards but having few discards yourself from say Two Blues or Wests.

Bigger concern for Subbies would be ensuring integrity with "semi-pro" players (i.e. SRU) coming in to the fully-amateur union. Shouldn't be an issue in reality but in theory it does raises concerns.

Yeah for the purpose of this exercise, I cant imagine any of the colts that didnt make 3rd Div Colts in SRU are on any money.

I would agree 100% - the problem is that the amateur policy also restricts a lot more than just match payments and that's where things would get tricky.

Not saying that should be a block but Subbies is, rightly, very strict around those policies and they are generally incompatible at SRU level.

That’s a good place to start but what it requires is a level of ‘coach confidence’ and maturity that does not feel threatened about releasing excess players for the good of the wider game. The hardest thing to do when coaches are measured and judged on specific club success is to convince them to think of the bigger picture. Answer that question and we have solved one of life’s greatest mysteries.

Petersham vs Briars
Petersham will be looking to bounce back after a tough 2024 season, but unfortunately, they’ll likely fall short against Briars. With their strong backline, Briars should dominate this one. Briars 30-7.

Forest vs Irish
Irish, in their Div 2 debut, will be eager to make a strong start, but it could be a challenging day for them. Forest, dropping down from Div 1, will be tough to handle, and Irish might struggle as the game goes on. Forest 32-12.

Pats vs Uni
Reports suggest Uni had a close call with Quins last week, and Pats will be fired up for this one, they should have no trouble taking control. Uni might have a tough time keeping pace. Pats 26-5.
0/3 tough going here

Good footy at Redfeld College today.

We started well in 2s but their fitness got them there in the end. Lot of young blokes about the same age, good cohesion, fed off our errors.

First Grade we had a lot of disruptions and were down 19-0 before we knew it. As usual they're very fit and have a couple of big boppers in the pack to complement this. Hard to break down their defence but we came from 38-12 at halftime to 38-22 at fulltime off the back of finding a bit of rhythm.

I played all of Seconds at hooker and came on at loosehead for First Grade as we were desperately short of front row stocks ;)

Has the rule around the away club changing strips when there is a clash changed? Just tried watching some of the Forrest Irish game and Green & White plays Green & White.
The grand final last year was Blue on Blue with Mountains and Waverly.
In this day of Ladies Day jerseys etc you’d think clubs would have a spare set for these games.

Was a bit challenging at times at redfield today as well - we used a white strip last year but went back to dark blue with small white and red stripes.

Their tricolour is different enough. Just.

Some clubs would struggle to fund an away kit.
