Sydney Subbies 2025

It would be interesting to see where a particular school's players end up - naturally a percentage go to Premier Rugby Colts and some to Subbies.

I've said a few times with the number of school rugby teams rapidly decreasing there isn't as much talent to spread around anymore. Knox (the school) seems to have a strong relationship with Gordon so a lot of the top talent go there.

One promising trend appears to be a number of those players returning to play their twilight years in Subbies though.. one last run around with their old school mates.

Most of the schools seem to have a bit of a linkage with one Premier club or another.

I don't believe so given they've listed a second grade kickoff time on club socials - highly unlikely we see a "forfeitt" in that game.

Seems like it'll be just Beecroft and Old Barker who struggle for a second grade.
Hills had rumours early of a lack of numbers, however should make it through the year with 2 sides. Id expect even some Halligans from them on home games.

The post wouldnt have sounded the same if it went
Forfeitt
Match to go ahead
Forfeitt

The second grade finals will be hilarious if Barker and Beecroft both fold their second grade side.. 4 teams, 4 finals spots. Take the whole year off then show up for 3 weeks and you're good

Petersham vs Briars
Petersham will be looking to bounce back after a tough 2024 season, but unfortunately, they’ll likely fall short against Briars. With their strong backline, Briars should dominate this one. Briars 30-7.

Forest vs Irish
Irish, in their Div 2 debut, will be eager to make a strong start, but it could be a challenging day for them. Forest, dropping down from Div 1, will be tough to handle, and Irish might struggle as the game goes on. Forest 32-12.

Pats vs Uni
Reports suggest Uni had a close call with Quins last week, and Pats will be fired up for this one, they should have no trouble taking control. Uni might have a tough time keeping pace. Pats 26-5.

I heard that Forest v Irish this weekend there will be 1s-4s but no Colts.
That has been published on the Forest instagram and facebook.

Do Burraneer Colts get the forfeit win to start the year? Seems to be a double standard to some degree if Forest get some extra time when some other clubs may not...

I see the Joy Johnson Cup has been split into 2 comps.

I guess it pretty much had to be. With so much growth - nearly double the number of teams from last year - it was probably good to get it into an 8-team plus the rest.

You'd like to see First Div all get a womens team by 2026. At present I can see

First Div (4 of 8)- Colleagues, Hunters Hill, Lindfield, Newport
Second Div (4 of 6) - Irish, Forest, St Pats, UNSW
Third Div (2 of 8) - Hornsby, Barker
Fourth Div (2 of 6) - Mac Uni, Brothers
Fifth Div (1 of 8) - Raptors
Sixth Div (2 of 9) - North Cronulla, Oatley
Invitees - UoW, Norths

You would think with such a large junior base that Mosman could field womens no issue, and Blueys can't be far behind. Drummoyne and Waverley?

I think, in fairness to Forest, you have to give them a little bit of a parachute having just been relegated from Div One. Look where they are in Sydney, they are easy pickings for Newport, Mosman and Lindfield who can offer Barbour to players. If, at the end of the season, they haven't got a single game of Colts under the belt, then by all means bring out the pitchforks, but I reckon at least give them (and everyone) a bit of a grace period through the Easter-ANZAC period.

Very charitable of you! Whilst I sort of agree with your collaborative approach, all Div 2 clubs have known Round 1 was this weekend for quite some time. Will all clubs get the same leniency for Round 1? as mentioned above there are issues with Div 3 2nd Grade - should be consistent.

I guess the question is why aren’t they playing this week. Do they think they can get the numbers over the next few weeks or are people just away this week for someone’s birthday. Or is it just a stalling tactic to get into the season and then pull the pin when Subbies can’t knock them down a division for having no colts.

But ultimately as you say it becomes difficult when one clubs gets a favour in Rd 1 and a delayed game but in Rd 4 when my players go to the Taylor Swift concert I have to forfeit.

Div 3 preview

1st Grade
1. Beecroft
- Their 1st grade side last year was very competitive in div 2 and I believe most of the 1st grade team is back. Struggling numbers in 2nd grade may well come back and bite them in the second half of the year and finals but they were struggling last year for 2nd grade and they still managed to perform well.

2. Hills - Very similar to Beecroft and probably could be interchangeable in positions, they made the finals in div 2 last year with a an extra win compared to Beecroft. I put Beecroft ahead of them as Hills has have been aging and they seem to slightly regress each year.

3. Hornsby - I don't know how well div 4 form will carry over but they were very strong last year and it wouldn't surprise me if they end up coming 1st in the division. Big fast and powerful they will be there come finals time.

4. Knox - From the teams that stay in div 3, Knox were the best of them last year and I think they will represent the biggest challenge to the newcomers to the division. They are a good team and will i predict they will pick up a few games from the teams above but may lack the talent to consistently beat the best teams.

5. LCOI - They struggled last year (1 win) and the year before that so i would be surprised if there was any major improvement. A surge in colts may help but it normally takes a few years to flow through to grade.

6.BOBS - Same boat as Iggies they struggled last year, based on subbies 10 they have strong colts and this may flow through but will probably take a few years. I expect they and iggies will not make the finals and will battle for the wooden spoon.

CC
1. Hornsby - expecting a strong 1s, 2s, with a serviceable colts should be enough.
2. Knox - competitive in 1s and 2s with a very good colts will keep them near the top.
3. Beecroft - expecting a strong 1st grade, weak 2nd grade and a normally decent colts.
4. Hills - will be competitive in 1s and 2s but no colts hurts them.
5. LCOI - expecting them to be reliant on grade to get them any points.
6. BOBs - weak 1s, no 2s will hurt, only redemption will be colts.

2nd grade will be shambles but I expect it to be a very competitive colts competition with multiple possible contenders.
