Thanks for the correction Bulldozer, I will try get away from the Mrs. long enough tomorrow to see the game - Should be an exciting one, keen to see how these boys perform - lots of experimental placements. I caught up with my nephew this evening (much to my disgust he is a member of the St Joseph's GPS rugby squad, though I dare not specify further) and apparently he heard through the grapevine Shirley will be starting 15 for Shore - He performed excellently in defense for Shore on Saturday in the centers, but I'm not sure what the rationale is for chucking him out the back in favour of the likes of Kierse and Keeler.
I'm keen to see how some of the experimental players we haven't seen much of will do. I think Warner was a little out of his depth in the 2nds on the weekend, but I hope to see him gain a bit of confidence. Whilst he had a few drop balls, when given the option he disappeared down the blind side in search of a meat pie quicker than a rat up a dunny pipe. Definitely an exciting player to watch, especially once he settles into the rhythm of GPS footy, and his ability to stay quick for the length of a game is promising, particularly this early on.
Morrow was unlucky not to get more game time on the weekend, despite clearly needing a bit of fitness work he showed some serious ball running potential. It would have been interesting to see how he performed in scrums, he definitely has the size for it but as we saw in the 1sts, technique is everything - I'd be interested to know if anyone has any thoughts on his performance from previous years. From what I saw he appears to be built like a bush pig, and for the brief period we saw him on the field on the weekend he definitely put that size to use, hunting gaps in the Waverly defence like cane toads on the highway.
I'm excited to see Roberts in 9, I believe he is new to this position but he seems a bit more suited behind the ruck than he did on the weekend. Hopefully he can bring a bit more speed and coordination to the breakdown, and I think he will be a much more effective backup rucker than Cockle which seemed like a bit of a vulnerability on the weekend. It will definitely be interesting to see how this updated backline will hold up against the cavalry of St Aloysius.
Godspeed to the Thirds for tomorrow, I'm sure a throbbing victory will come naturally. If I end up getting to the game I will debrief this blessed forum on Shore's inevitable victory.
Until then
