Ok, so here's what I'm thinking. I keep wondering about Drew Mitchell's yellow card last week. It seemed such an innocuous piece of play. I wondered how the AR even really saw it and so I started to think about other cards we have seen recently and saw a common denominator - Richie bloody McCaw. Who did Heaslip kick in the head? Richie. Who did Roussow 'hurt'? Richie.
Now I'm not calling Richie a cheat here. What I am wondering about is whether teams briefings with the referees are coming back to bite them. Do you think it's possible that opposition teams to the All Blacks are asking Refs to watch Richie closely and that is then biting them on the arse? Are Refs always keeping one eye on Richie and therefore seeing all sorts of off the ball stuff that they just wouldn't see on other players?
I'm not talking here about the rights or wrongs of cardings, it just seems to make sense to me that sometimes Refs view of the game must become skewed. They are asked by the IRB or by opposition teams to keep an eye on 'x' player or 'y' areas of the game and therefore see the game through that lense. Not sure what the answer is here. Perhaps teams need to ask the Refs to look at someone else's play, then kick Richie in the head?
