Yeah listen I don’t disagree, the more game time would be better... but not at the expense of female inclusion..

It’s easy to suggest the secondary field will work and wouldn’t cost much, but I really don’t think that’s true for all circumstances. It throws an extra logistical challenge in for any potential host of the tournament, which is a reason I believe many of the countries aren’t doing it now. Las Vegas cancelled the women’s component, and Sydney took a significant crowd hit to try and make the structure suitable across 3 days.

Also the world sevens series is the penultimate tournament now for Sevens Rugby, I don’t think we should be arguing for 13th place play off for the sake of ‘development’. It needs to move beyond the participation award at some point. People want to see the best playing the best at the pointy end of the tournament.

Based on what?

For Sydney to host games on Kippax, they had to rent stadium seating, extend temporary fencing around the precinct, extra security and logistical staff, required food and beverage vans as well as change rooms for the players, media tends for the media, and bathrooms for everyone. There’s traffic management costs required for closing the road between the stadium and Kippax.

Also the broadcasters have a minimum standard for the quality of broadcast, which means a requirement for cameras in in cherry pickers and a minimum number surrounding the ground. Additionally no games could be played at night or dusk given the lighting requirements for broadcast. Renting lighting towers wouldn’t be sufficient

I really think you're reaching now, TOCC. :)

They've done it before, they can do it again.

But why would they need to play at night? The schedule for each bracket is fully independent. Play the day.

Also full TV broadcasting is not the same as streaming. Be nice to have the real thing, of course.

No just painting the reality of it, I went to the Sydney Sevens the past two years, the first year as a photographer for GAGR, and I sat and watched the girls on the spare field and witnessed first hand all the overheads that go along with running two live fields. I’m giving you an example of the infrastructure required so you can gain an actual appreciation of the costs required rather then dismissing it so easily.

Your right, they have done it before, and coincidentally they stopped doing it.. what’s that tell you?

As I said, I’ve being to the Sydney Sevens the past two years, and I’ve see what a brilliant package that a combined tournament is, but I’ve also seen everything that is wrong with the concept as well.

Firstly that it is logistically feasible to use a second field. This year they tried to have all matches on the main field within a more interleaved men's and women's format. It wan't entirely successful.

They can keep the interleaved format and compress it all to two days if they put the lower finals brackets back on the second field.
In which case combined men’s and women’s tournaments will struggle to gain traction across the series.

In your opinion, my friend, which you are entitled to have.

The integrated tournaments will continue to be held and fine tuned, IMO, with or without your consultancy reports.

More will be added.

If it were just my opinion, then why haven’t more countries picked it up, why not New Zealand, why did Vegas cancel theirs? Why was Charlotte Caslick and Ben Ryan criticising the format.. yes Paris did it this year, but that’s offset by Vegas cancelling theirs. There is no growth in the concept.

There’s something clearly wrong with the format of more countries aren’t jumping at the chance to combine the legs.

Let’s not plead ignorance and pretend there isn’t.

Never mind.. you’re right...
I’ll just go back to streaming the women’s off Facebook

And yet I'm not advocating that.

Keep the women's and men's Cup play-off matches interleaved on TV and on the main field.

Do whatever is needed for men's and women's Challenge matches. Hold them, of course. Screen on TV if possible -- or if streamed from the training ground, so be it.

Change of venue next year:

Never heard of it, interested in what Sydney-siders think of it.

Glad that they've moved away from the Australia Day long weekend back to February.

I'd have thought that the new Parramatta Stadium would have been a better option - due to open in 2019, although in fairness maybe not ready for the first week in Feb.

Spotless Stadium is in the RAS Showground complex at Homebush, so at least there will be easy access to facilities outside the ground. Even though it's an oval ground, it's reasonably small so viewing shouldn't be too much of an issue.

Playing it in the west is a good idea, no problem with Homebush from a geographical perspective.

Horrible idea, Spotless is an oval stadium that is unsuitable for watching rectangular sports

Thanks for the indights, guys. Looks awful for watching 7"s at the ground unless they have temporary seating on the actual oval.

Timing-wise this pushes the Hamilton 7's back to last weekend in January which is a long weekend for roughly the top half of the North Island. Tournament will still be Saturday & Sunday but it gives (some) people the extra day to travel home.

I don't think it'll do well there, it's not a good stadium for rectangular sports. Not sure they had any better options though with the SFS and Parramatta Stadium unavailable. Places like Leichhardt, Brookvale and North Sydney Oval probably don't have good enough facilities. Maybe Gosford could have been an option.

Probably would have been better to move it to Melbourne or Brisbane for next year.

I think Sydney should have relinquished the event for 2019 whilst the SFS was not available.

Clearly they consider this the best option available to them (out of a bad selection of options).

Who knows what will happen now though. There's a fair amount of pressure on the NSW Government to cancel the SFS rebuild.

View looks worse than I first thought. I've only been there for show jumping and other Easter Show events.

In terms of rectangular grounds in Sydney, Parramatta Stadium would have been best, but probably not available in Feb 2019.

Beyond that, in no particular order, there would be Concord Oval, Penrith Park, Cambelltown Stadium, Leichhardt Oval, Endeavour Field.

Possibly Concord Oval would have been the best option or even Penrith.

EDIT: People know that I don't mind hooking into the ARU/RA for any number of stuff ups, but I think in this instance there's not much available to them (presuming that they are obliged to keep it in Sydney)

I don't think any of those other grounds would have the necessary facilities and in particular, media and broadcasting facilities.

Urgh shit decision. Absolute pain to get to by public transport and bars/pubs/restaurants around it are minimal. Only upside is plenty of parking

Newcastle would have been a better option then Spotless IMO...

Or if that wasn’t an option, then it should have gone interstate. Sure there may have been contracural requirements with NSW Tourism, but surely an inability to provide a suitable rectangular stadium would have been enough cause to take it elsewhere for a year. This move has a good chance of killing the Sydney 7s.
