The Women's Sevens program are running trials around the country in an attempt to identify new talent in the lead up to the Olympic Games in Rio in 2016.

Rugby Sevens is now recognised as an Olympic sport and will make its debut at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio, Brazil. The ARU is excited to be searching for Australia's next gold medal winning team.
Attending a Pathway to Gold trial is the first step in the process of identifying athletes who display the potential to represent Australia in the Women's Sevens team at the 2016 Olympic Games.
You don't need to have a background in rugby to attend these trials. If you are sporting all-rounder, then come and try out for this fast-paced, challenging sport.

The trials are being held in four locations around Australia. They will run for four hours, including registration.
The ARU coaches will give you an introduction to Sevens Rugby and an overview of the High Performance Program. This will be followed by general measurements, in addition to sport-specific fitness and skills testing, including coordination, spatial awareness and catching. There will be no contact involved.
If you are unable to attend any of the trials, please register your interest at your nearest location and fill in the ‘Other relevant information’ field to say that you can’t attend. We will endeavour to hold additional trials, so it is worth registering even though you cannot make the listed dates.

The bloody Darkness beat our 7's team in Fiji. Report courtesy of Yahoo 7. http://au.news.yahoo.com/a/-/sport/14461202/nz-womens-sevens-team-win-oceania-champs/

The Qantas Women's Sevens continued their strong day one form at the Oceania Women's Sevens Championships, finishing second after going down to a determined New Zealand outfit in the final.

It was the first meeting between the two sides since their epic 2009 Women's Rugby World Cup Sevens clash that saw Australia win in extra time.
The Qantas Women's Sevens side couldn't repeat the result from two years ago, going down 35-24 to their trans-Tasman rivals, however showed signs throughout the Championship that that they are well placed a year out from the next Rugby World Cup Sevens next year.

The Australians started day two the same way they finished day one, with a convincing 22-0 win over the Cook Islands before advancing to face Fiji in the semi-final.
The Qantas Women's Sevens continued their good form and ran out 26-5 victors against the powerful Pacific Island nation to advance to the final against New Zealand.

While New Zealand were strong in the first half, Australia fought back, scoring a late try to close the gap to 21-19 at half time.
Chasing a two-point deficit in the second half, the Qantas Women's Sevens were only able to notch one further try before eventually falling 11-points short, 35-24.

Day 1 provided a significant confidence boost for the Qantas Women's Sevens, with an early 48-0 win over the Solomon Islands, before defeating Papua New Guinea 29-7 and Samoa 34-0.

Both Australia and New Zealand have already qualified for the Women's Rugby World Cup Sevens in Russia next year, meaning third-place finishers Fiji secured a place in the Asian Rugby Football Union regional qualifier.

Heard about the 7's trials via my old coach on FB.

Jarse it is a disappointment but at least we are competing against NZ in the shorter version of the game. I'll take that at least.

Sydney competition semi-finals at Rat Park yesterday. Sydney Uni beat Waverley 48-nil in a fairly expected way. Warringah over Parramatta 27-nil was more surprising. A full-strength Warringah team will not be easy for Sydney Uni to beat, but my money is still on Students.

Photos of one match (why they didn't take both who knows): http://manly-daily.whereilive.com.au/photos/gallery/womens-rugby/

3:15pm at Granville Park, bring your friends.

Sydney Women's Grand Final was won 7-3 by Warringah last weekend. Intense battle worthy of a final. Uni suffered a few key injuries that may have cost them.

Would just like to know everyone's thoughts on the Women's 7s players who are new to the game (mainly from touch) being told they do not need to play 15s?

I know that after the HK 7's loss to England earlier this year Rebecca Tavo encouraged all players to go back and play club rugby, but I am hearing this is not the message coming from the ARU coaches.

Watching that final v England I think that our lack of physicality at the breakdown was a key reason for the loss. Surely encouraging the 7's girls to play 15's will only improve this aspect of their game. I see the 7's girls struggling against the likes of NZ and England come Moscow 2014 if we do not aim up at the tackle contest.

Speaking of GF's the HWRU one is today. Newcastle/Hunter (HWRU) has Uni v Wanderers. Wanderers have been in the GF the last 12 years going by the HWRU record. Uni beat Wanderers last year 12-10. The finals saw a 3-all draw between the two teams. It will be tight today at 4:30pm.

I will be coming off the bench for the Uni second row or back row. A little nervous.

I assume that the GF result brings this fine undefeated run to an end. How many games was the streak in the end?
I believe it was 40 games.

Dour and tough all right.

Dumb and dumber. If what they are aiming at is Olympic success, it would be one thing right before the Olympics staying away from possible injury in club rugby. At this point any new girls coming need to develop those basic skills.

On that note Iliseva Batibasaga was playing for Uni in above mentioned grand final, always a pleasure to watch.

I can't like this comment enough - especially the last paragraph. You just do not learn how to be physical in 7's to same extent as you do in 15's. TBH I'm worried about what this is going to do to our 15's team who came in 3rd at the last world cup in terms of our ability to scrum, do breakdown work, etc.

Good luck. Look forward to reading the match report.

Already told you we won in the other thread Jarse, when I have a bit more time I'll write the report & post the link here.

RFU Womens Premiership - Round 1 today

Scrumqueens provides a team by team review:

Richmond

The reigning league champions will start the season again as favourites having claimed the title for the past three years running. Karen 'Jock' Findlay remains as head coach, with further coaching announcements anticipated in the coming weeks for the Club which operates at great depth with three competing sides in various leagues.

Key players returning at the start of the season include England internationals Claire Allan and Alex Matthews both back from injury, and Richmond have a host of other international players in their ranks such as England’s Alice Richardson and Rowena Burnfield, Scotland’s Susie Brown and Lindsay Wheeler, Spain’s Maria Ribera Garcia and Ireland’s Lynne Cantwell (pictured)

Exiting the Club are centre Rachael Burford who has joined Thurrock, and Spaniards Ellie Garcia and Barbara Pla Vegue, with the latter leaving a strong scoring record behind her.

Saracens

Saracens finished a close second last season and will certainly be targeting lifting the league title for the first time in four seasons. Saracens were three in-a-row winners then, but have been pipped in the past few seasons by local rivals Richmond.

The north Londoners can certainly call on experienced internationals including in their ranks both experience and fresh talent with England Internationals, Maggie Alphonsi and Hannah Gallagher teaming up alongside England Under 20’s, Leanne Riley, Georgia Peedle, Ellie Gattlin and Mica Evans. They will be joined once again this season by Canada 7’s captain, Mandy Marchak while her 15’s team mate, Hilary Leith will make her debut for the club.

Wasps

Wasps have worked hard in the pre-season build up, including matches against Saracens and Cardiff Quins. The team, based in Acton, west London, have also appointed a new backs coach, Ben Woods, who has great experience working with the likes of Leicester Tigers in the past.

The ultimate aim for Wasps is to improve on last season’s 4th place finish in the league. Wasps also have a second side which competes in Championship South 1 and so with players continuing to developing and new players to the club there is plenty of competition for places throughout both squads.

Key players for the first team include backrow Jane Leonard and lock Jo McGilchrist, who are back from injury this season and the side will benefit from Michaela Staniford and Tash Brennan’s continued experience on the 7s circuit. Players to look out for this season are youngsters Hannah Edwards and Marissa Lowe who both continue to improve and develop with every game they play.

First up are Premiership newcomers Thurrock Ladies which is sure to be a tough match with Wasps expecting Thurrock to want to prove themselves in their first Premiership experience.

Worcester are aiming to improving on their mid-table place, targeting a top three finish for the coming season.

Tim Stevenson has joined Head Coach Luke Fisher (AKA Jersey) and Assistant Donna Kennedy in the capacity of Backs coach and the Club is confident that Tim’s input will develop the skills of their exciting and speedy backs.

The influential Karen Jones and Heather Fisher will make a welcome return after long term injury, however, the Worcester injury jinx is still present so the season will commence without a full complement of first team players. Other key players include England 7s star Jo Watmore.

Several second team players experienced life in the Premiership last season due to injuries and this strength in depth has been augmented by the arrival of Sian Williams, Joy Potter, Sarah Mimnagh and Bridget Williams for 2012-13. The Club have seen some departures with Mary Anne Gittings, Rhiannon Parker and England 7’s player Kate Hancock opting to join Bristol, to help reduce their round trip to training and games by around 160 miles.

DMP Sharks

The northern outfit are aiming to improve on their placing last season and have a new head coach in Mike Barnett – an experienced women’s coach having previously worked in the national set-up.

Always a tough proposition on home soil, DMP Sharks have a number of influential players in their ranks. They include women’s 15s captain Katy McLean who is a towering presence at fly-half along with England Sevens player Ruth Laybourne. Highlighting the youth development at the Club, England U20s players Abbie Scott and Rachel Roberts continue to improve while newcomer Amy Needham will also be a welcome addition. Ireland’s Sophie Spence is also in the side again this season.

A recruitment drive over the summer has seen plenty of new faces to the set-up.

Lichfield

After a hard summer of tough pre-season training, Lichfield have worked hard to be ready for their opening game of the season against local rivals Worcester this Sunday. Benefitting from an unchanged coaching team, Lichfield are looking to continue to build on their success and solid 3rd place finishes in the Premiership over the past two seasons. With some key players still recovering from injury and fulfilling work commitments, some new talent is emerging to step up and the Club will see the progression of some of their U18s straight into senior rugby. Key figures at the Club include England’s Emily Scarratt and Sarah Hunter who will both be influential this season while Tamara Taylor's arrival is a boost.

Follow Lichfield on Twitter @Lichladiesrugby

Bristol

Bristol have moved to brand new training facilities over the summer and now have access to fantastic facilities for themselves with a new club, pitches and clubhouse. The main departures at the Club are Poppy Cleall who has moved on after her time at UWE and Monica Lewinska who has moved home, however the arrival of Welsh international captain Rachel Taylor is a big boost. She will join newly England capped Kate Newton, who is growing into her into her new position at prop, having played second row for many years.

Another key arrival this year is Welsh flyhaf Elinor Snowshill, an exciting young player. There are a further few overseas arrivals with two Spanish internationals Isabel Rico (who has previously played for the club) and Elena Redondo.

Head Coach Susie Appleby will have some welcome selection headaches this season.

Follow Bristol Ladies on Twitter @Bristol_L_Rugby

Thurrock

Newcomers to the league this season the “T-birds” come into the Premiership with the fantastic record of four league titles and three promotions in five seasons.

Again narrowly missing out in 09/10 the addition of some new young County tyros for the 10/11 season gave the team a new look and cutting edge. The league was won comfortably, only losing one game and last season the T-Birds again all before them. They then triumphed in a hard fought battle over Camp Hill to secure promotion to the top level.

The key new recruit this season is England centre Rachael Burford who joins from Richmond while Irish international flanker Louise Austin is also on board. A player to watch is the pacey Tanya Pinkham who provides gas on the outside.

Oakfield is a fortress for the team, having lost just once at home in the last 5 seasons.

There is a fair bit of excitement about the bid by the Sydney Convicts to host the Mark Kendall Bingham Memorial Tournament in Sydney in 2014. This is also knowm as the Gay Rugby World Cup.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Kendall_Bingham_Memorial_Tournament

It seems that only players with penises have played in this tournament so far.

How about lobbying the Convicts and/or IGRAB to have players without penises participate in their own division in 2014.

I am sure that there are enough women rugby players who support the goals of International Gay Rugby Association and Board (IGRAB) to promote rugby as an all inclusive non-discrimatory sport for everyone regardless of sexual orientation to have a viable female division in 2014.

On a seperate topic, Did anyone catch Morning Report on ABC702 this morning?

I missed it but heard their promos. They were doing a segment on the ARU quest for female athletes to try out for a Go for Gold in Gold in Rio 2016.
